Selenobrachys philippinus Schmidt, 1999 is the accepted name in the current World Spider Catalog. West, Nunn & Hogg moved it to Orphnaecus in 2012, so most pet-trade material still calls it Orphnaecus philippinus. Acuña and colleagues restored Selenobrachys in 2025 after morphological and molecular analysis.

📌 Description
The Philippine tangerine is a compact, intensely orange, fossorial Old World tarantula from Negros Island. Adults commonly reach about 10-13 cm diagonal leg span. Females may live around 12-15 years under stable care; mature males are shorter-lived, often only three or four years in total.
This spider digs deep silk-lined tunnels and often extends dense webbing above the entrance. It is fast, reclusive, and capable of an immediate defensive response. It lacks urticating hairs and must never be handled. Its bright color is frequently hidden in a well-designed enclosure, so it suits a keeper who values burrowing and web construction more than constant display.

☠️ Venom
No robust clinical series defines the venom of this species, so claims of a precise “potency” are unjustified. It is an Old World selenocosmiine without urticating hairs; treat any bite as medically important because pain, swelling, cramping, and delayed systemic signs are possible after bites from related Asian theraphosids.
Carry out maintenance with long tools and a catch cup already open. Work in a closed, uncluttered room with a second containment tub when rehousing. Never use fingers to retrieve a dish or remove webbing, and never test the spider’s defensive behavior.
After a bite, clean the wound, remove tight jewelry, and contact poison-control or medical services. Seek urgent help for severe pain, spreading swelling, muscle cramps, weakness, vomiting, breathing problems, facial swelling, or neurological symptoms. Do not use a tourniquet, cut the wound, or try to extract venom.
🌍 Distribution
The 2025 revision and the World Spider Catalog restrict S. philippinus to the Philippines, specifically Negros Island. A reviewed human observation from Negros Oriental and a preserved-specimen record from Canlaon provide traceable points for climate context. Broader “Philippines” trade labels should not be read as evidence that the species occurs across the whole archipelago.
Negros has warm, humid, rainy tropical conditions, but the spider lives in soil retreats where temperature and moisture are buffered. In captivity, reproduce the protected gradient: moist tunnel walls, a breathable surface and entrance, shade, and permanent drinking water—not a saturated sealed box.

⚖️ Legal status
The official CITES Appendices and current EU wildlife-trade Annexes were checked on 2026-08-05. Selenobrachys philippinus is not currently CITES-listed, and no species-specific EU Annex entry was found. It is not relevant to the Bern Convention because it is not native to Europe.
Philippine wildlife collection, possession, transport, and export rules may still protect native animals independently of CITES. Importing countries can also regulate venomous invertebrates. Confirm local ownership and trade rules before arranging a purchase, and do not assume an old Orphnaecus label changes the law.
Buy captive-bred stock with a dated invoice, breeder or seller identity, country of purchase, parentage if known, and any import or transfer paperwork. Retain both scientific combinations in the record so older documents remain searchable.
🤌 Husbandry
House this species alone. Even if two juveniles appear to tolerate one another, cohabitation can end in predation without warning.
Quarantine new stock for at least 60-90 days in a separate area. Use dedicated forceps and water equipment, and record feeding, waste, hydration, molt dates, injuries, and visible mites. Avoid pesticides, reptile mite sprays, and decorative bioactive introductions during quarantine.
Small slings need secure vials with several body lengths of substrate, lateral ventilation, a starter hole, and tiny water access. Pre-killed prey can be placed at the burrow mouth if a sling is too small to subdue live prey safely. Scale the enclosure gradually so uneaten insects and molts remain recoverable.
An adult setup around 25 x 25 x 35 cm works when 18-22 cm of the height is compact substrate. Include a side-started cork retreat, water dish, and anchor points. Leave only modest open height. Position access away from the burrow mouth and make certain sliding doors cannot be pushed apart by soil or webbing.
Rehouse by joining containers inside a larger empty tub and guiding the spider through a tunnel or catch cup. Have the entire route prepared before disturbing the burrow. A sudden bolt is foreseeable, not an accident.
💡 Lighting
No UVB or basking lamp is required. Use 10-12 hours of indirect room light. The enclosure should remain shaded enough that the spider can emerge without being exposed to intense glare.
Plant lighting is optional and must not heat the lid or dry the top layer quickly. Avoid direct sun and night bulbs. Short, dim observation after dark is less disruptive than repeatedly uncovering the retreat.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain roughly 22-26 °C by day, with a cooler retreat near 20-23 °C and a small night drop to the same range. The target is stable warmth, not a hot spot. High temperatures combined with wet stagnant air can exhaust or dehydrate the spider surprisingly quickly.
Room heating is safest. If extra heat is needed, use a thermostat and warm one external side only. Never heat beneath the substrate. Check the temperature at the burrow entrance and the cooler side rather than relying on a room thermostat across the room.
Do not impose a dramatic seasonal cycle on slings, recent imports, thin animals, or spiders approaching a molt. Breeding attempts should not compromise basic stability.
💧 Humidity and water
Keep the lower substrate evenly but lightly moist and allow part of the surface to become less damp. A working enclosure may read around 65-80% relative humidity, but substrate condition and airflow are more useful than one hygrometer number.
Provide a shallow water dish at all stages when size allows. Overflow one edge or water down one side, then let the upper layer begin to dry. Cross-ventilation should clear condensation within hours. A sour smell, persistent wet walls, springtail or gnat explosion, and surface pacing all suggest excess moisture or insufficient air exchange.
Do not mist directly onto the spider or flood a sealed burrow. During premolt, leave water available, remove prey, and protect the stable moisture gradient.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Use compacted pesticide-free topsoil mixed with coco fibre and a little clay or other safe tunnel-holding invertebrate substrate. Build it in compressed layers. Loose fibre collapses; permanently saturated organic soil becomes anaerobic. Avoid fertilizer, cedar or pine shavings, sharp rock, unstable heavy decor, and mesh that can catch claws.
Angle cork bark into a starter tunnel against one wall. Add leaf litter, thin cork pieces, and stable twigs near the entrance for webbing. Expect the spider to connect most objects with silk and to bury the water dish occasionally.
Keep vents above the substrate and on more than one side. Remove prey remains and contaminated material without stripping sound webbing. A complete rebuild is justified for flooding, structural collapse, persistent mold, severe infestation, or medical need—not because the enclosure looks untidy.
🪳 Feeding
Use appropriately sized captive-reared crickets, roaches, locusts where legal, and occasional mealworms or superworms that cannot disappear into the soil. Slings may eat small prey or pre-killed portions every 3-5 days, juveniles every 5-10 days, and adults roughly every 7-14 days. A well-conditioned adult may need longer intervals.
Keep prey no larger than the spider’s body and reduce feeding when the abdomen is clearly wider than the carapace. Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours and immediately if premolt is likely. Aggressive feeding response does not prove hunger.
After a molt, wait until movement is coordinated and the fangs are black—usually several days for small juveniles and at least a week for adults. Do not dust whole prey with supplements.
🥚 Breeding
Only breed accurately identified, mature animals when separate housing is ready for the adults and potentially 100-250 spiderlings. Mature males may appear in two to three years and females later, but growth varies strongly with temperature and feeding. Sex from an intact molt when possible.
Introduce the male with escape routes and tools prepared, observe without hands in the enclosure, and separate promptly. Specialist captive reports use about 24-27 °C and describe egg-sac development on the order of six to eight weeks. These are breeder planning values, not a reason to overheat or keep the maternal burrow saturated.

Do not excavate a healthy sealed burrow merely to check the spider. Seek prompt specialist or veterinary advice for a death curl, inability to right itself, continuing hemolymph loss, a severe failed molt, or progressive decline.
📌 Conclusion
Selenobrachys philippinus is an expert-level display spider whose orange color may rarely be visible. It needs deep compact soil, localized moisture, cross-ventilation, and a rehearsed no-contact maintenance method. The current scientific name and documented Negros origin should be part of every purchase record; an untraceable old trade label is not enough.
