Poecilotheria tigrinawesseli is a fast arboreal Old World tarantula from India. It is kept for display, not handling, and the enclosure has to be designed around speed, medically significant venom, and reliable paperwork.
Adults are usually about 15-20 cm legspan. Females are heavier and long-lived; mature males become slimmer, restless, and short-lived after maturity.
This is an expert species. A calm individual is still capable of explosive movement, defensive threat posture, and a serious bite.

Plan the enclosure around the whole maintenance sequence before the spider moves in. Put the enclosure inside a larger clear tub for major work. A catch cup with a rigid card, a second lidded container, and another experienced adult should already be present before a rehouse starts.
Life stage changes matter. Small spiderlings often use soil-level crevices and may burrow under bark, so a compact container with 3-5 cm of moisture-holding substrate is safer than a tall empty vial. Give them a diagonal bark strip that connects the substrate to the lid without leaving a wide fall zone. Move juveniles only when the existing container no longer allows clean water access or safe feeding; frequent upgrades create unnecessary escape opportunities. Adults need height, but every extra centimeter must be usable cover rather than exposed air.
Never test temperament by touching the spider. If it leaves the retreat during maintenance, stop moving tools and allow it to settle. Do not block a bolting animal with a hand. For rehousing, align the old and new retreat entrances inside the work tub and guide from behind with a long soft brush. A transfer that takes several calm attempts is safer than forcing the spider in one fast attempt.

Normal room lighting is enough. UVB and hot basking lamps are unnecessary.
Use indirect display light only. Bright heat above the retreat can dry the upper webbing and force the spider into exposed movement.

Aim for about 23-27°C by day, with nights around 20-23°C. Avoid a hot basking spot.
If extra heat is needed, warm the room or one side gently under thermostat control. The spider must be able to leave the warmest area without leaving its retreat.
💧 Humidity and water
Aim for about 65-80% as a ventilated gradient. Keep water available and maintain some moisture reserve without keeping the enclosure sealed or wet.
Good airflow matters as much as humidity. Condensation, mold, and a sour smell mean moisture is outpacing ventilation.
Measure conditions near the retreat rather than relying on one humidity reading at the top of the enclosure. Overflowing part of the water dish can maintain a moist lower corner while the bark and upper walls dry between waterings. The spider should be able to choose between a slightly damp lower zone and a drier upper retreat. Continuous spraying is not a substitute for drinking water and may drive the animal out of its shelter.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Use cork tubes, vertical bark slabs, branches, and foliage to create private routes from floor to top. The retreat should let the tarantula disappear completely.
Avoid wide mesh, loose heavy decor, large door gaps, and layouts where the spider sits directly on the opening path.

Feed roaches, crickets, locusts where legal, and occasional soft larvae. Adults usually do well with suitable prey every 7-14 days.
Offer prey near the retreat and remove uneaten insects before molts. Do not use vertebrate prey.
Adjust feeding to abdomen condition and molt stage, not only the calendar. Spiderlings can take small prey once or twice weekly; established adults may need only one suitable item every 10-14 days. A darkened, withdrawn spider that refuses prey may simply be in premolt. Remove the insect and wait until the new fangs are fully dark and the body has hardened before feeding again—several days for juveniles and often a week or more for a large adult.

Common problems include escape during water changes, stale wet air, dehydration, stuck molts, fall injuries, overfeeding, and rushed rehousing.
Most incidents happen during routine access. Design the enclosure so water, prey, and maintenance can be managed without chasing the spider.
A tarantula lying on its back is usually molting and must not be turned over. Keep prey out and avoid moving the enclosure. Persistent condensation, mites clustered around the mouth, a shriveled abdomen despite water access, a fall, leaking hemolymph, or limbs trapped after a molt requires prompt assessment. Correct obvious setup faults first, but do not improvise medication; contact an exotics veterinarian familiar with arachnids when injury, severe weakness, or a failed molt is evident.
After a suspected bite, move away from the enclosure so a second escape or bite does not occur, wash the site, and contact medical services or a poison-information service. Give clinicians the full scientific name and time of exposure. Do not cut, suction, freeze, or apply a tight tourniquet. Muscle pain or cramps can be delayed, so the absence of immediate systemic signs does not justify ignoring later symptoms.
