Avicularia minatrix Pocock, 1903 is an accepted species in the World Spider Catalog. The 2017 revision retained it as a distinctive member of Avicularia, recognizable in scientific material by characters that include the persistent orange lateral abdominal marks on a dark background. Labels such as red slate pinktoe and Venezuelan redstripe pinktoe occur in the hobby, but the scientific name is the useful identifier.

📌 Description
This is a compact New World tree tarantula. Adults usually span about 7-9 cm, considerably smaller than the familiar common pinktoe. Females may live about a decade or somewhat longer under stable care; mature males are shorter-lived. Its small size does not make maintenance casual: it can jump or bolt through a narrow opening and depends on strong cross-ventilation.
The orange-red abdominal pattern remains visible into adulthood rather than disappearing after the juvenile stage. The spider normally constructs a silk tube among bark, leaves, or a bromeliad-like cluster near the top of the enclosure. An established animal may spend much of the day inside this retreat and emerge after dark.

☠️ Venom
Like every tarantula, A. minatrix has venom. Its bite is not supported by controlled clinical evidence as medically significant, but venom composition is poorly characterized and a bite can still cause pain, swelling, nausea, or an unpredictable allergic response. The fangs also produce puncture wounds that need cleaning.
This species also bears type II urticating hairs, which are generally transferred by contact rather than kicked in a visible cloud. Do not handle it. A startled animal can leap, fall, or disappear behind furniture before the keeper can react. Use long tools, a catch cup, and a clear work area. Wash exposed skin after maintenance and treat eye or breathing exposure as urgent. After a bite, wash the wound and seek medical advice for severe or spreading symptoms; never cut the wound or apply a tourniquet.
🌍 Distribution
The 2017 taxonomic revision documented A. minatrix from Venezuela and described silk tubes inside tree bark, hollow branches, and the centres of large bromeliads in clearings within tropical forest. The current World Spider Catalog gives Venezuela and Brazil at country level, but the revision stated that examined records were known only from Venezuela. The map therefore represents the catalogued country context, not a continuous verified range.
The enclosure lesson is specific: offer a narrow elevated retreat with many silk anchors and moving air, not a sealed wet “rainforest tank.” A tree cavity or bromeliad buffers moisture while remaining connected to outdoor airflow.

⚖️ Legal status
The official CITES Appendices and Commission Regulation (EU) 2026/1383 were checked on 2026-08-06. Avicularia minatrix was not found in the CITES Appendices or EU Annexes A-D. The Bern Convention is not relevant because this is not a European native species. Non-listing does not establish that a specimen was collected or exported lawfully.
Buy captive-produced stock with the scientific name, date, breeder or seller identity, and source history on the invoice. Retain any import or transfer papers. National or municipal rules may regulate venomous invertebrates, transport, breeding, exhibition, or tenancy even without a wildlife-trade listing.
🤌 Husbandry
House one spider per enclosure. Reports of several individuals using one large bromeliad in nature do not demonstrate safe communal keeping: separate silk tubes and escape options cannot be reproduced reliably in a small box. Cannibalism may happen without warning.
An adult can use a secure vertical enclosure around 20 x 20 x 30 cm. Ventilation holes should cross at least two opposing sides, including openings above and below the retreat zone. The lid or door must open without tearing down the upper web, and every gap must be smaller than the spider’s carapace. Start tiny spiderlings in proportionally small ventilated containers so prey and hydration can be monitored.
Place a vertical or slightly angled cork strip against one wall, add foliage and twigs as anchor points, and leave a route behind the cork for a web tube. Use 4-6 cm of substrate to buffer spills and accept waste. A small elevated water cup is useful because an established spider may be reluctant to descend.
Quarantine every arrival for at least 6-8 weeks away from other arachnids. Use separate tongs and water equipment, and record the vendor label, feeding, fecal spots, molts, posture, and any mites or phorid flies. Give a shipped spider water and quiet before offering food. Plan rehousing inside a larger tub with two catch cups ready; never chase an arboreal tarantula with bare hands.
💡 Lighting
UVB and basking lamps are unnecessary. Give 10-12 hours of indirect room light followed by a dark period. Direct sun can overheat a small acrylic enclosure within minutes.
A low-output plant LED may be used outside a planted enclosure, but verify the upper retreat temperature with a probe. The spider must have a shaded web tube. Coloured night lamps and bright inspection lights disturb normal activity and add no benefit.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain roughly 20-25°C during the day and allow nights around 19-22°C. This conservative captive range overlaps specialist husbandry recommendations without forcing the spider to endure outdoor daytime extremes. Persistent heat above 27-28°C is more dangerous than a mild night drop because a small arboreal enclosure dehydrates quickly.
Warm the room if possible. If supplementary heat is unavoidable, use a low-power thermostatically controlled source outside one side of the enclosure, never beneath it and never covering ventilation. Measure near the upper retreat as well as lower down. A spider repeatedly abandoning the web, stretching near vents, or sitting beside the water dish may be too warm or poorly ventilated.
💧 Humidity and water
Do not keep the enclosure continuously wet to chase a percentage. A broad 60-75% reading may occur after watering, but clean water, brief wet-dry cycles, and air exchange matter more than the hygrometer. Old advice that combined saturated substrate with little airflow contributed to avoidable losses of pinktoe tarantulas.
Keep a shallow dish full. Lightly overflow it onto one corner, then let exposed surfaces dry. Once or twice weekly, depending on room dryness, place a few droplets on webbing or foliage in the evening without spraying the spider. Spiderlings need closer hydration checks because their small containers dry fast, but they also fail quickly in stale condensation.
Condensation that persists all day, a sour smell, or mold spreading through the web indicates excessive water or inadequate cross-flow. A shrunken abdomen and repeated drinking indicate dehydration. Correct the cause gradually; never flood the silk tube.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Use unfertilized topsoil, coco fibre, or a loose soil-coco mix. Deep burrowing substrate is unnecessary, but the base should absorb overflow and let the keeper remove contaminated patches. Avoid perfumed mulch, fertilizer, pesticide residues, sharp wire, and loose fibers that can snag legs.
Cork bark should be firmly wedged so it cannot fall when webbed. Artificial leaves, small branches, and a strip of clean leaf litter provide anchors. Keep the upper third structurally rich but leave room to move a catch cup around the animal. Top-only ventilation is insufficient; mesh may also catch tarsal claws and is best avoided.
Spot-clean prey remains and obvious waste without dismantling an intact retreat. Replace all substrate only for contamination, persistent pests, or a necessary rehouse. A webbed-shut entrance usually signals premolt or a period of rest, not an invitation to open it.
🪳 Feeding
Offer captive-reared crickets, small roaches, or locusts where legal. Prey should normally be no longer than the spider’s abdomen. Tiny slings can take flightless fruit flies, pinhead insects, or a small piece of freshly killed prey twice weekly. Juveniles commonly feed every 5-7 days, while adults in good condition need an appropriate item every 7-14 days and sometimes less.
Place prey near the web entrance after dusk. Remove it within 24 hours if ignored, and never push prey into a sealed tube. Stop feeding when the abdomen darkens, the spider refuses repeatedly, or the retreat is closed. Live feeders can injure a soft molting tarantula.
After a molt, wait until the fangs are completely black and the body is firm—usually several days for juveniles and about 7-10 days for adults—before feeding. Adjust quantity to abdomen condition rather than a rigid calendar. Calcium and vitamin powders are not required for a whole-prey tarantula diet.

- Stale damp housing can cause abrupt decline; increase cross-ventilation and stop routine saturation.
- A wrinkled abdomen or persistent drinking suggests dehydration; refill the dish and review heat and watering.
- Wandering at the lid often means the retreat lacks anchors, has been kept too wet, or is repeatedly disturbed.
- Mold, mites, and phorid flies usually follow retained prey remains and wet organic waste.
- Long fasting and a sealed web are normal before molts. Do not tear the retreat open.
- A fall, leaking hemolymph, severe uncoordinated movement, eye exposure to hairs, or a clearly stalled molt needs advice from an exotics veterinarian familiar with arachnids.
Never apply household insecticide, essential oil, dog or cat mite medication, or disinfectant fumes near the enclosure.

Avicularia minatrix suits a keeper who wants a small, patterned arboreal display spider and can manage ventilation and escape risk precisely. Its main failure point is not a lack of constant humidity but the combination of wet surfaces and trapped air.
