White-lipped Pit Viper

Trimeresurus albolabris Gray, 1842 is the current combination for the white-lipped pit viper. Older veterinary, zoo and hobby literature often uses Cryptelytrops albolabris. Both names should be included when checking medical notes and origin documents.
The white-lipped pit viper belongs to a taxonomically difficult species complex. Animals historically sold under this name may now belong to T. insularis, T. septentrionalis or another similar lineage. Colour, especially a blue body, is not reliable proof of species. Documented locality, parentage and expert identification matter.

📌 Description
This is a small, slender, arboreal and medically significant pit viper. Adult males are often 50-65 cm long; females are heavier and may approach 80-100 cm. Published field work from Hong Kong recorded strong sexual dimorphism and gravid females of 87-245 g. Reliable maximum captive longevity is poorly documented, so 10-15 years is a prudent planning range rather than a guaranteed limit.
Its modest size is misleading. The snake can remain motionless on a branch and strike rapidly from an elevated coil. Envenomation commonly causes pain and swelling and can disturb blood coagulation; severe local injury is possible. This is an expert-only display species, never a “starter viper.”

🌍 Distribution
Modern taxonomy makes the range less simple than older care sheets suggest. Securely assigned T. albolabris sensu stricto occurs in southern China, including Hong Kong and the type-locality region, and in northern to north-eastern Vietnam. Recent integrative work also finds related or unresolved populations across parts of northern Thailand and Indochina. Many older records from India, Indonesia and the wider region now refer to other species in the white-lipped complex.
Within the confirmed range the snake uses secondary forest, shrubland, forest edge, agricultural vegetation and other humid, structured habitats. It is highly arboreal but may use low vegetation and sheltered ground-level refuges. The captive lesson is abundant stable perching, cover and moving air—not permanently wet walls.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-08-14: Trimeresurus albolabris was not found in the current CITES Appendices, Annexes A-D of the current EU wildlife-trade regulation, or the Bern Convention appendices.
Absence from those lists does not authorize private ownership. National and local rules may regulate or prohibit medically significant venomous snakes, require licensed premises and inspections, set transport conditions, or demand an approved bite and escape plan. Confirm the rules in every relevant jurisdiction before purchase, movement, breeding, sale or public display.
Keep the invoice, breeder and parentage information, locality or origin statement, import documents where applicable, photographs and transfer history. These records are particularly important because old trade labels can conceal a different member of the T. albolabris complex.
🤌 Husbandry
House the snake in a locked enclosure within a locked, restricted and escape-resistant room. Viewing panels should resist breakage, ventilation and cable routes must exclude neonates, and routine tasks must be possible without placing hands in the occupied compartment. A lockable shift box and tool-operated guillotine door are core equipment, not optional refinements.
The keeper needs supervised practical training, suitable tools, a second trained person for non-routine work, and written bite and escape procedures coordinated with local emergency services. Never free-handle this species. Ordinary cleaning should not depend on pinning, grabbing or tubing; those are specialist restraint decisions for veterinary or other essential procedures.
Before acquisition, identify the emergency number and receiving hospital and prepare a current species and venom information sheet. Antivenom availability varies by country, antivenom is not interchangeable between all green pit vipers, and its administration belongs in a hospital.
Quarantine for at least 90 days in simple, easy-to-inspect housing with dedicated tools. Record weight, feeding, faeces and sheds. Field studies have documented several parasite groups in this species, so wild-caught and imported animals require an experienced reptile veterinarian and appropriate faecal testing. Solitary housing is the safe baseline; pairing increases ambiguity about position, feeding, disease and control of the enclosure.
💡 Lighting
Provide 10-12 hours of visible daylight. Dense foliage should not turn the cage into permanent darkness: a clear day-night signal supports activity and seasonal rhythm. Low-output UVB may be offered across part of the upper canopy, but every warm perch must also have a shaded equivalent. Measure the UV gradient at the animal’s actual perch and guard all lamps.
Seasonal day length can be adjusted modestly for documented localities. Do not infer that an animal from an unknown trade line needs a particular breeding cycle.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Create a warm perch or small radiant zone at 28-30°C, general daytime air of 24-28°C, and a shaded cool area of 21-24°C. Allow nights to fall to approximately 19-23°C. Arboreal vipers can overheat quickly when the entire upper cage is warmed; use more than one sensor and verify temperatures at several perch heights.
Place heat outside the enclosure or behind a robust guard and control it with a thermostat. A ceramic heater or lamp that can be touched from a branch is a burn hazard. Ventilation must continue while heat is operating.
Some Hong Kong populations brumate, and zoo breeding reports describe short cooling around 15-18°C. Cooling is not required for a display animal. It belongs only in a deliberate programme for healthy, established adults of known provenance, after feeding has stopped and with redundant monitoring. Never cool a juvenile, thin, gravid, sick or newly imported snake.
💧 Humidity and water
Target approximately 70-85% relative humidity while allowing leaves, perches and enclosure surfaces to dry between misting cycles. Short evening misting, a moisture-retentive lower substrate and strong cross-ventilation work better than a constantly saturated cage. Measure humidity at both the upper perches and lower retreat.
Provide a clean water bowl large and stable enough for the snake to drink from, even when droplets are offered on leaves. Replace water daily and after contamination. Persistent condensation, sour substrate or mould means the enclosure is too wet or poorly ventilated. Incomplete sheds indicate that the humidity cycle, hydration, security or health needs review—not that the whole enclosure should be flooded.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
An adult enclosure should be at least 90 x 60 x 90 cm. Height is useful only if it contains stable horizontal and diagonal perches at several temperatures. Build the shift route and safe service access before adding plants.
Include:
- branches thick enough to support the whole coil without flexing
- at least one warm and one cooler elevated resting site
- dense visual cover around, but not completely obscuring, key perches
- an elevated hide or cork pocket and a sheltered lower retreat
- 5-8 cm of soil-based or coconut-based substrate that buffers humidity without remaining waterlogged
- drainage where planted substrate is used, plus accessible removable water and waste areas
Quarantine paper is safer until the animal is feeding and parasite status is known. Avoid loose sphagnum across the whole floor, sharp wire, adhesive décor, unstable branches and plant pots that prevent a complete visual count. Trim plants so the snake can be located before any door is opened.
🪳 Feeding
Offer captive-bred, frozen-thawed rodents of modest girth with long tools. Prey should leave only a small swelling. Large females generally need more food than small males, but arboreal pit vipers are ambush predators with low energy expenditure and become obese when fed on a weekly “because it struck” schedule.
Juveniles may take a small mouse every 7-10 days. Established adults usually do well every 14-21 days; smaller males may eat less often or pause seasonally. Record weight before escalating food. Do not transfer the snake to a separate feeding tub and do not leave a live rodent unattended. Whole prey needs no routine supplement powder.
Refusal can accompany season, reproduction, excessive heat, exposure, parasites or illness. Repeated teasing increases bite risk and stress. Review the enclosure and body weight, then use a reptile veterinarian rather than unsafe forced feeding.
🩺 Common problems
- Obesity and fatty liver risk: frequent large meals produce a thick, cylindrical body and obscure the spine; extend intervals before increasing prey size.
- Dehydration and dysecdysis: wrinkled skin, retained eye caps or repeated incomplete sheds call for better hydration and a corrected humidity cycle.
- Respiratory infection: wheezing, bubbles, open-mouth breathing or an unusual head-up posture need urgent reptile-veterinary evaluation; stagnant wet air is a common setup failure.
- Dermatitis and mouth disease: persistent wetness, contaminated perches and injuries can lead to inflamed scales or oral lesions.
- Parasites: weight loss, regurgitation and abnormal faeces are particularly important in wild-caught or imported animals; diagnose rather than treating blindly.
- Burns and falls: unguarded heat and weak branches can injure a snake that spends long periods coiled in one place.
Treat every bite as a medical emergency. Move clear of the enclosure, call emergency services, remove rings and constricting items, keep the person still and transport without delay. Do not cut, suck, ice or electrically treat the bite, and do not apply a tight tourniquet or pressure-immobilisation bandage to a bite expected to cause major local swelling unless a local poison centre specifically directs it. Do not try to capture the snake; provide the enclosure label, origin record and an existing photograph.
📌 Conclusion
The white-lipped pit viper suits only an expert facility that can combine ventilated arboreal care with double containment, contact-free servicing, verified identity and a tested medical plan. Its small size and common presence in trade reduce none of those obligations.
