Common Garter Snake
🔤 Taxonomy
Thamnophis sirtalis is the accepted name for the common garter snake. It is a geographically variable species with twelve commonly recognised subspecies; locality labels matter because colour, adult size, climate and legal protection differ. The San Francisco garter snake, T. s. tetrataenia, is a federally endangered US subspecies and must never be confused with ordinary captive lines.
English hobby names include common garter snake and common gartersnake. The German name is Gewöhnliche Strumpfbandnatter.
📌 Description
This is a slender, alert North American snake, usually 50-100 cm long, although large females can approach 130 cm. Females are markedly heavier than males. Well-kept animals commonly live 10-15 years.
Garter snakes are active, food-oriented and capable swimmers. Their small head and flexible body make escape prevention more demanding than their size suggests. They also need a varied whole-prey diet; a menu built only around an unsuitable feeder fish can cause nutritional disease. These two points make the species better for a prepared intermediate keeper than for an impulsive first purchase.
The rear oral secretions used to subdue prey are mildly venomous but are not considered medically significant to people. A bite may cause local irritation or swelling, and any persistent reaction needs medical advice.
🌍 Distribution
The species has a vast native range across southern Canada, most of the United States and into northern Mexico. It occupies woodland edges, meadows, marshes, stream margins, gardens and other habitats that combine cover, prey and seasonal refuges. Populations experience very different winters, so care and planned breeding cycles should follow the documented locality rather than a single range-wide recipe.

⚖️ Legal status
The species is not listed in the current CITES Appendices, no species-specific listing was found in the current EU wildlife-trade annexes, and the Bern Convention is not applicable to this non-European native species. This does not make every animal freely collectable or transferable.
Native-wildlife rules vary sharply across North America. Some jurisdictions prohibit collection or possession of wild common garter snakes, and T. s. tetrataenia is protected as endangered under US federal law. Buy only a legally captive-bred animal with a locality, breeder identity and invoice recorded.
T. sirtalis is not on the EU list of invasive alien species of Union concern checked on 30 August 2026, but any escaped non-native snake can affect local fauna and may breach national release or animal rules. Use two independent barriers when transporting it. Never release an escaped, unwanted or captive-born garter snake; contact a reptile rescue or the competent authority instead.
🤌 Husbandry
House common garter snakes singly. Group housing is sometimes promoted for the genus, but this species has documented feeding accidents and cannibalism risk. A practical minimum for one average adult is 120 × 60 × 60 cm; very small males may use less, while a large female benefits from more.
The enclosure must pass a fingertip inspection around door tracks, cable ports, vents and lid corners. Use a lock or positive latch, not lid weight. During cleaning, close the room, block floor gaps and account for the snake before opening any exterior door.
Quarantine a new animal for at least 60-90 days with separate tools. Record weight, meals, sheds and faeces; request an exotics-veterinary examination and faecal test for wild-caught or poorly documented stock.
💡 Lighting
Provide a bright day-night cycle: about 14 hours in summer and 10 hours in winter, changed gradually. Low-strength UVB is recommended, with a usable basking UVI around 2-3 and dense shade beside it. Lamp output depends on mesh and distance, so follow measured manufacturer guidance rather than wattage alone. No coloured or bright night lamp is needed.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Create a 29-32 °C basking surface, a 23-27 °C warm ambient zone and a 21-24 °C cool retreat. Night temperatures of 18-22 °C suit many captive localities. Cool-side air above 30 °C removes safe choice and can quickly cause heat stress.
Control every heater with a thermostat and guard bulbs inside the enclosure. Measure the basking surface with an infrared thermometer and both ambient zones with digital probes.
Brumation is not routine pet care. An 8-14 °C cycle is used by experienced breeders of appropriate temperate localities only after health, body condition and digestion have been checked. Do not cool juveniles, new arrivals, thin or sick snakes.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain roughly 40-60% relative humidity, allowing normal daily fluctuation, and provide a ventilated humid hide during shedding. Continually wet bedding is not a substitute for hydration and can lead to skin disease.
Place a stable swimming basin on the cool side, large enough for the snake to enter and leave easily. Replace water whenever fouled and disinfect the basin regularly. A deep water feature must have a secure exit and cannot create gaps around plumbing or cables.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Use 8-10 cm of additive-free topsoil/coir with a little sand, or another clean substrate that holds moderate moisture without staying sodden. Paper is appropriate during quarantine. Avoid cedar, scented wood, sharp gravel and damp moulding aspen.
Provide tight hides at both ends, cork tubes, leaf litter, low branches, plants and visual cover. The animal should be able to travel much of the enclosure without being fully exposed. Feed on a dish or with tongs so wet prey does not collect substrate.
🐁 Feeding
Offer varied, correctly sourced whole prey. Useful staples include earthworms, frozen-thawed mice and whole feeder fish known to be low in thiaminase. Amphibians and wild-caught fish carry legal, parasite and toxin risks and should not be collected as food.

- juveniles: every 3-5 days
- adults: every 4-7 days, adjusted to body condition and prey energy
- maximum single-prey width: about 1-1.5 times the snake’s widest point; a whole meal should usually stay near 10% of body mass
Do not base the diet on goldfish, rosy red minnows or raw fish fillet. Fillet is not nutritionally complete, while repeated high-thiaminase fish can cause vitamin B1 deficiency. Whole-prey variety normally needs no powder; a diet that cannot be balanced should be reviewed with a reptile-experienced veterinarian rather than corrected by guesswork.

- repeated rubbing or disappearance attempts: insecure, exposed or overheated setup
- tremors, poor coordination or weakness: possible thiamine deficiency or other urgent disease
- retained shed: dehydration, missing humid retreat or illness
- blisters and red abdominal scales: persistently wet or dirty substrate
- wheezing, bubbles or open-mouth breathing: respiratory disease requiring veterinary care
- weight loss, abnormal faeces or persistent refusal: parasites, infection, stress or unsuitable temperatures
📌 Conclusion
The common garter snake suits a keeper who can provide a locked, checked enclosure, a safe whole-prey rotation and clean swimming water. The purchase should wait until legal origin and locality are documented. Escape recovery and responsible rehoming must be planned in advance because release is never an acceptable solution.
