🔤 Taxonomy
Oxyuranus scutellatus is the accepted species name. The nominate O. s. scutellatus occurs in northern and eastern Australia, while O. s. canni is traditionally recognized in southern New Guinea. Genetic work found little mitochondrial separation but retained the forms because of consistent pattern differences and limited sampling. Captive labels must record subspecies and exact locality rather than use “coastal taipan” as sufficient provenance.
📌 Description
The coastal taipan is a large, long-headed elapid, usually 180-260 cm, with excellent vision and rapid, purposeful movement. It is mainly diurnal, although hot conditions can shift activity later. Adults may live 15-20 years.
Envenomation may cause severe neurotoxicity, coagulopathy, muscle injury and kidney complications. Avoid sensational “venom ranking” claims: husbandry decisions come from reach, speed, behaviour, medical consequence and response capacity. This animal belongs only in a licensed institution using protected contact.

🌍 Distribution
The species occurs in coastal and subcoastal northern and eastern Australia, southern Papua New Guinea and records in Indonesian New Guinea. The country map highlights all Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, so it greatly overstates the occupied area—especially in Indonesia. It cannot show the narrow tropical/coastal distribution, inland gaps or the boundary between Australian O. s. scutellatus and New Guinean O. s. canni.
Habitats include monsoon and sclerophyll forest, woodland, grassland, pasture and cane fields with abundant mammals. The climate station is a reviewed Queensland occurrence of the nominate Australian subspecies; it must not be used as a climate proxy for canni without locality evidence.

⚖️ Legal status
No species-specific CITES, EU annex or Bern Convention listing was found when checked on 17 August 2026. Australian native wildlife law is nevertheless highly restrictive: commercial export of live native reptiles is prohibited, other movement is permit-controlled, and state or territory law regulates capture, possession and venomous-snake licences. New Guinea and destination-country rules apply separately.
Most animals outside the native range should therefore have a traceable captive institutional lineage, not an assumed Australian export story. Retain permits, invoices, breeder and institutional transfer records, locality/subspecies evidence, photographs and legal-check dates.
🤌 Husbandry
House singly in a locked venomous room with secondary containment. The enclosure needs two full-size shift compartments joined by closable doors, and service ports for water, feeding and waste. A taipan can close distance rapidly; safety must not depend on a hook keeping the head away.
Quarantine at least 90 days with separate tools and preferably separate air. Track weight, feeding, sheds, faeces, mouth and respiration; screen imports or poorly documented stock for parasites. Confirm the subspecies and lineage before using any seasonal or breeding protocol.
💡 Lighting
Provide 10-12 hours of bright visible light and full night darkness, with deep shaded retreats. Guard all fixtures. Low-level UVB may be offered over part of the warm zone as a Ferguson Zone 2 opportunity, always with shade.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain 25-29°C ambient air, a 32-34°C local basking surface, a 23-25°C cool hide and nights around 21-24°C. Measure surface and air temperatures throughout this large enclosure and thermostat every source.
Do not maintain the entire enclosure at tropical daytime maximums. Queensland animals experience seasonal and daily variation and actively choose shelters. O. s. canni husbandry should be based on documented New Guinea locality, not copied automatically from the Queensland table.
💧 Humidity and water
Use 50-70% relative humidity with strong ventilation, raising only a local shed retreat to 70-85%. Coastal wet-season periods do not justify a permanently saturated floor. Let exposed substrate dry while one covered deeper zone buffers moisture.
Provide a heavy clean water bowl through protected access. Monitor drinking and urates during hot weather and after transport.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
An adult requires at least 240 x 120 x 120 cm, and exceptionally large animals need more. Install two secure shift hides, low broad shelves, fixed branches, visual screens and uninterrupted floor for active travel. Avoid blind service corners.
Use 8-12 cm of compactable soil, washed sand and leaf or mulch material, or paper in quarantine. Avoid aromatic wood, sharp chips, unstable structures, adhesives and deep clutter. Every door needs two mechanical locks; the room needs an airlock or equivalent second barrier.
🐁 Feeding
Wild coastal taipans specialize largely on warm-blooded prey, especially rodents, bandicoots and birds. Feed suitable frozen-thawed rodents; most adults maintain lean condition on moderate meals every 10-21 days. Juveniles take smaller meals more often.
Offer prey from a protected port with long tongs and shift the snake before retrieving refused food. Live rodents add bite injuries and unsafe recovery. Whole prey needs no routine supplements.
🛡 Operational safety and emergencies
Never free-handle, pin, neck or manually restrain. Use protected contact, shift boxes, transparent shields and equipment designed for a very fast long elapid. Two trained adults attend every opening of primary containment.
Agree the bite protocol with a hospital or poison centre before acquisition. Include subspecies, exact locality, photographs, transport and access to Australian/New Guinean antivenom expertise. Product choice and geographic effectiveness are clinical decisions; private antivenom storage is not a complete plan.
Every bite requires immediate emergency care. Withdraw, call emergency services, remove tight objects, keep the patient still and follow poison-centre directions. Where current Australian protocol applies, trained responders use pressure immobilisation with a firm bandage and splint; facilities elsewhere, including New Guinea, must follow their regional poison-centre and prearranged facility plan. Article text cannot replace practical first-aid training. Do not cut, suck, ice, shock, use a tight tourniquet or delay transport to capture the snake.
🥚 Breeding notes
The species is oviparous, with reported clutches of about 3-21 eggs. Institutional incubation commonly uses 27-29°C for roughly 60-75 days, but records must remain tied to the subspecies and parent locality.
Breeding produces large numbers of fast venomous juveniles. Verify the pair’s lineage, lawful authority, staffing and placements first. Prepare individual locked rearing units and complete origin records before hatching.
🩺 Common problems
- Obesity: prevent with moderate prey, long adult intervals, weighing and movement space.
- Rostral trauma: investigate repeated barrier contact, sightlines and inadequate cover.
- Burns and overheating: guard and thermostat heat and preserve a true cool retreat.
- Respiratory disease: bubbles, open-mouth breathing or abnormal sounds need urgent veterinary care.
- Dysecdysis and dehydration: review water, local humidity and systemic health; do not restrain at home.
- Parasites and stomatitis: quarantine and veterinary testing are essential for uncertain-origin stock.
📌 Conclusion
The coastal taipan requires zoo-scale protected-contact housing and records precise enough to separate Australian scutellatus from New Guinean canni. A lawful lineage, trained team and hospital response must exist before the animal arrives; venom superlatives add nothing to that decision.
