Eastern Green Mamba
🔤 Taxonomy
Dendroaspis angusticeps is the accepted name for the eastern green mamba. A 2025 genus-wide analysis found no support for restoring D. intermedius as a separate species and retained it in the synonymy of D. angusticeps. The animal must not be confused with D. viridis, D. jamesoni or the larger, less arboreal D. polylepis; exact identity and origin affect both husbandry and medical planning.
📌 Description
The eastern green mamba is a slender, strongly arboreal African elapid, generally 150-230 cm long. Its green coloration can make an alert snake almost disappear among leaves, while its speed and reach make open-contact work exceptionally hazardous. Adults may live 15-20 years under stable institutional care.
Envenomation can produce rapidly progressive neurotoxicity and respiratory paralysis. This guide is for licensed zoos, research collections and similarly equipped institutions—not private free handling. The enclosure, staffing and hospital response must be ready before an animal arrives.

🌍 Distribution
The confirmed coastal and near-coastal range runs from Kenya through Tanzania and Mozambique to Malawi, eastern Zimbabwe, KwaZulu-Natal and adjacent eastern South Africa. The species uses evergreen forest, thicket, wooded coastal mosaics and mature vegetation around farms and settlements. A peripheral Democratic Republic of the Congo record remains questionable and is deliberately omitted from the map.
Whole-country shading overstates occupancy: the animal is tied to humid eastern habitats and is absent from broad dry interiors. The reviewed KwaZulu-Natal climate point below illustrates one lowland locality, not a range-wide average.

⚖️ Legal status
No species-specific entry for D. angusticeps was found in the CITES Appendices, EU wildlife-trade annexes or Bern Convention appendices when checked on 17 August 2026. South Africa’s current 12 October 2023 NEMBA/TOPS list republication includes the species as Vulnerable, and range states regulate wildlife capture and export. Non-listing in CITES does not authorize possession or movement.
Local and national rules for possession, transport, breeding, sale and import may still require dangerous-animal licences, inspected rooms, competence evidence, insurance or written emergency arrangements. Keep invoices, breeder and locality records, photographs, permits and transport documents, and obtain written confirmation from every relevant authority before acquisition or transfer.
🤌 Husbandry
House one animal alone in a locked venomous-animal room with secondary containment. Two full-height compartments joined by remotely closable shift doors allow feeding, cleaning and veterinary preparation while the snake is positively secured. Service points, drains, ventilation and cable entries must resist both escape and unauthorised access.
Quarantine for at least 90 days in simple, observable housing, with dedicated tools and preferably separate air. Record weight, feeding, shedding, faeces and respiration; animals of uncertain or wild origin need veterinary parasite assessment. Never interpret stillness in foliage as permission to enter the enclosure.
💡 Lighting
Provide 10-12 hours of bright, diffuse visible light and full darkness overnight. Dense artificial or live foliage and opaque retreats must let the snake leave the illuminated zone. Place lamps outside primary containment or behind rigid guards.
Low-level UVB may be offered over part of the upper warm canopy, targeting a Ferguson Zone 2 opportunity with measured shade nearby. UVB is optional enrichment, not a reason to reduce cover or compromise secure servicing.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain ambient air at 24-28°C, an upper basking surface at 30-32°C, a shaded cool retreat at 22-24°C and nights around 20-23°C. Measure both air and branch surfaces at several heights; a tall enclosure can hide dangerous hot layers. Thermostat every heater and add independent high-temperature alarms.
Do not make the whole canopy uniformly hot. The snake must be able to move between warm, neutral and cool branches without crossing exposed floor. Any seasonal cycling belongs to a documented breeding programme and is unsuitable for thin, sick, juvenile or newly imported animals.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain 60-80% relative humidity with regular ventilation and drying of exposed surfaces. During shedding, offer a localized retreat at 75-90% rather than keeping every branch wet. Persistent condensation, saturated substrate and stale air predispose to skin and respiratory disease.
Provide clean water in a stable bowl reachable through protected service. A dripper onto leaves can encourage drinking in selected individuals, but it needs drainage and cannot replace a cleaned bowl. Record unexpected increases or decreases in drinking.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
An adult enclosure should be at least 240 x 120 x 240 cm, and larger is preferable. Use thick fixed branches at several heights, broad shelves, dense visual barriers and two elevated shift boxes. Every perch must carry the entire snake and be removable only after secure shifting.
Use 6-10 cm of compactable soil and leaf litter over drainage, or paper during quarantine. Avoid unstable branches, adhesive décor, sharp wire and blind cavities. Doors need two independent mechanical locks; the room requires an airlock or equivalent secondary barrier and an unmistakable venom warning.
🐁 Feeding
Offer appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents; occasional suitable birds may be included only within an institutional nutrition plan. Most adults remain lean on moderate prey every 10-21 days. Weigh the snake and follow body condition rather than its rapid feeding response.
Feed through a protected port with long tongs, and shift the animal before retrieving refused prey. Live rodents create bite injuries and unsafe removal tasks. Balanced whole prey requires no routine vitamin or mineral dusting.
🛡 Operational safety and emergencies
Routine free handling, pinning and manual restraint are unacceptable. Use protected contact, shift boxes, transparent shields and equipment intended for fast arboreal elapids. Two trained staff must attend whenever primary containment opens, with roles and abort criteria agreed beforehand.
The receiving hospital or poison centre must review the bite plan before acquisition. Provide current and older names, known locality, photographs, transport route and a route to expert antivenom advice. Antivenom availability and product choice are regional clinical decisions; private possession of vials is not a treatment system.
Treat every bite as an immediate emergency. Withdraw safely, call emergency services, remove rings and tight items, keep the patient still and immobilize the limb while following the regional poison centre’s plan. Pressure-pad or pressure-bandage methods are not universal across African bites and require specific training and medical guidance. Do not cut, suck, ice, shock, use a tight tourniquet or delay transport to catch the snake.
🥚 Breeding notes
Eastern green mambas are oviparous, with reported clutches commonly around 4-17 eggs. Institutional programmes often incubate viable eggs near 27-29°C for roughly 80-90 days, but maternal condition and incubation method affect development.
Pairing increases open-containment work and produces fast, arboreal venomous neonates. Confirm sex, identity, locality and lawful placement before introduction. Individual locked rearing units, labels and complete origin records must be prepared before eggs hatch.
🩺 Common problems
- Rostral and facial injury: repeated rubbing usually indicates poor cover, unsuitable viewing barriers or an inaccessible retreat.
- Burns and overheating: guard and thermostat every heat source; verify upper branches separately.
- Respiratory disease: open-mouth breathing, abnormal sounds or prolonged elevated posture requires urgent veterinary evaluation.
- Dysecdysis: review hydration, airflow and the humid retreat; never manually restrain the snake to remove shed.
- Obesity: prevent it with measured meals, long adult intervals and usable climbing routes.
- Mites, internal parasites and stomatitis: uncertain-origin animals require strict quarantine and diagnostics.
📌 Conclusion
The eastern green mamba requires a tall, densely structured enclosure that can be serviced entirely through shifting and barriers. Acquisition is responsible only when lawful provenance, two-person protected contact and a hospital-coordinated response are already functioning.
