Sharp-snouted Pit Viper
🔤 Taxonomy
Deinagkistrodon acutus is the accepted name of the sharp-snouted pit viper and the only currently recognized species in Deinagkistrodon. Older literature placed it as Halys acutus, Ancistrodon acutus, Agkistrodon acutus or Calloselasma acutus. Those combinations remain useful when searching historical veterinary and breeding records, but they are not the current genus.
The sharply upturned snout and coarse, strongly keeled scales are distinctive, yet an origin document and expert identification are still necessary. “Hundred-pace” and “five-pacer” are traditional common names, not measurements of venom potency or survival time and should never be presented as rankings.
📌 Description
This is a heavy-bodied pit viper, commonly around 90-120 cm and occasionally about 150-155 cm. It is predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal, usually rests on the ground and under cover, and may use low branches, root masses, rock faces and stream margins. A managed lifespan of 15-25 years is a reasonable planning horizon rather than a guarantee.
Envenomation can cause severe pain, rapidly progressive swelling, bruising, bleeding, coagulopathy, local tissue injury, shock and systemic complications. The snake’s cryptic pattern, rapid strike and ability to remain motionless under litter make positive location before servicing essential.

🌍 Distribution
The well-supported range covers eastern, central and southern China from Zhejiang and Fujian west through provinces including Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong and Guizhou to southeastern Sichuan, plus central and southern Taiwan and northern Vietnam, including records from the Yen Bai and Ha Giang region. Records attributed to Yunnan are questioned in the current Reptile Database account, and the reported presence in Laos remains uncertain.
It inhabits cool, humid forest and forest edge, wooded hills, rocky slopes and valleys, often near mountain streams and with deep litter, logs, rock cavities or low tree hollows. The map colours all China, Taiwan and Vietnam, so it strongly overstates the occupied parts of each country. Laos and questionable Yunnan records were deliberately omitted from the map; their uncertainty should remain visible in collection records. The reviewed Jiangxi climate point is one eastern Chinese locality, not a full-range average for Taiwan, Vietnam or western populations.

⚖️ Legal status
No species-specific listing was found in the CITES Appendices, EU wildlife-trade annexes or Bern Convention appendices on 17 August 2026. That does not make acquisition or keeping unrestricted. China’s Wildlife Protection Law applies permits or filing, lawful-origin evidence, special marks and transport or trade controls according to a native animal’s applicable category and purpose; the competent provincial authority must confirm the current treatment of this species and the institution.
In Taiwan, the Ministry of Agriculture’s 2026 prohibited-animal measure includes Viperidae and bars ordinary household keeping from 1 May 2026, with a transition registration system for existing animals. Institutional, conservation or research custody must be checked directly with the central and local authorities under animal-protection and wildlife rules. Vietnam revised its endangered-wildlife management lists and procedures for 2026; a facility must obtain an up-to-date written determination on origin, keeping, breeding, transfer and import requirements rather than relying on the expired Decree 06/2019 text.
Keep facility approvals, lawful-origin and province/locality records, transfer documents, individual photographs and dated legal advice. Local and national rules governing possession, transport, breeding, sale and import may still apply in every country, including where CITES does not list the species.
🤌 Husbandry
House singly in a locked venomous room with secondary containment. Use two externally operated, positively lockable shift hides so that the snake can be located and secured before a service port opens. All routine work is protected contact under a written two-person procedure; free handling is never a husbandry method.
Quarantine for at least 90 days on paper with separate tools and preferably separate air. Record weight, feeding, sheds, faeces, mouth and respiration. Wild-origin or uncertain stock needs veterinary examination, repeated faecal screening and ectoparasite control before naturalistic substrate. Retain the most precise lawful locality because thermal seasonality and legal status vary across the range.
💡 Lighting
Provide a locality-informed 10-13-hour seasonal photoperiod with complete darkness at night and extensive shade. Guard every lamp. Low-output UVB over part of the warm zone may provide Ferguson Zone 1 exposure, but dense ground cover and hides must allow total avoidance.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain 21-25°C ambient air, a local 28-30°C basking surface, an 18-21°C cool refuge and nights around 16-20°C. Measure both the open warm surface and the cool substrate under cover. Every heat source requires a thermostat and a physical guard.
This is not a uniformly hot lowland species. Many localities are seasonal, humid uplands where the snake uses cool stream-side refuges. Healthy, established adults of documented origin may receive a gradual winter reduction in room temperature and photoperiod, but the depth and duration must follow locality records. Do not impose deep brumation or cool juveniles, thin animals, new arrivals or snakes with respiratory signs.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain approximately 65-80% relative humidity with cross-ventilation, drainage and partial surface drying. Provide a localized 80-90% humid retreat during shedding. Persistent wet litter, condensation and warm stagnant air are not substitutes for humid forest conditions.
Supply a heavy clean water bowl through protected access. Moist leaf litter and a covered retreat are safer humidity tools than flooding the whole floor. Monitor drinking, urates, body mass, skin condition and sheds.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
An adult requires at least 180 x 90 x 90 cm, with greater floor area for a large female. Install two lockable shift hides, deep anchored cover, cork or stable rock shelters, visual barriers, broad low branches and a clear protected service lane. No cavity should be inaccessible to inspection and no route should place the animal above an open door.
Use 10-15 cm of well-drained forest soil, fine bark and leaf litter over drainage, or paper during quarantine. Avoid unstable stone, aromatic timber, sharp mesh and adhesive products. Two independent locks, guarded ventilation, room-level containment and a rehearsed escape plan are minimum operational features.
🐁 Feeding
Wild prey includes small mammals, amphibians and other terrestrial vertebrates. Established adults generally accept appropriate frozen-thawed mice or rats. Offer juveniles a small meal about every 10-14 days and adults a moderate meal every 14-28 days, adjusted to body condition, temperature and season.
Feed with long tongs through a protected port. Shift the snake before retrieving refused prey or cleaning. Live rodents can injure a sedentary snake and expose staff during recovery. Whole prey requires no routine supplementation.
🛡 Operational safety and emergencies
Never free-handle, pin, neck or manually restrain this species. Use protected contact, lockable shifts, shields and purpose-selected tools within a written two-person system. The second trained adult stays outside the immediate operation with communications, keys and the bite plan. Rehearse escape and bite responses without a live snake.
Before acquisition, confirm the regional poison-centre pathway, receiving hospital, transport, specialist consultation and access to an appropriate regional antivenom strategy. Taiwan and mainland China use locality-specific products and protocols; staff should not assume that any generic “pit-viper antivenom” is interchangeable. Keep photographs, scientific name, old synonyms and exact provenance with the medical plan.
Every bite is an immediate emergency. Withdraw, call emergency services, keep the patient still and remove rings, watches and tight clothing. Because this venom can cause severe swelling and tissue injury, do not apply pressure immobilisation, a constricting wrap or a tourniquet unless the responsible regional medical authority specifically directs it. Do not cut, suck, ice, shock, apply chemicals or delay for symptoms.
🥚 Breeding notes
D. acutus is oviparous and published series report large clutches, approximately 11-53 eggs, with advanced embryos at laying because females retain eggs for a prolonged period. A controlled study found mean post-laying incubation of 36.4 days at 24°C and 28.7 days at 26°C; development was shorter but hatchlings less developed at 28-30°C, mortality rose sharply at 30°C and no eggs hatched at 32°C. Therefore 24-26°C and roughly 27-37 days are a conservative evidence-based starting window, not a universal formula.
Do not extrapolate an exact hatch date from those constants: maternal retention, locality, embryo stage, actual egg temperature and incubation method all matter. Never turn or separate adhered eggs casually. Breeding needs lawful documented lineages, remote pairing compartments, continuous calibrated logging and individual locked neonatal units. Secure staffing and lawful placements before pairing.
🩺 Common problems
- Obesity: a heavy ambush predator needs conservative prey sizes, long intervals and recorded weights.
- Overheating: provide a measured cool refuge; persistent tropical heat conflicts with its cool microhabitats.
- Respiratory disease and scale damage: correct wet stagnant conditions and seek reptile-veterinary diagnosis.
- Dysecdysis or dehydration: adjust localized moisture and water access rather than saturating the whole enclosure.
- Rostral trauma: review reflections, cover, inaccessible routes and shift design.
- Parasites and stomatitis: quarantine, repeated testing and prompt veterinary care are essential for uncertain-origin animals.
📌 Conclusion
The sharp-snouted pit viper requires a cool, humid but ventilated protected-contact system, exact locality records and a hospital plan tied to regional expertise. Its traditional common names are folklore rather than venom rankings, and broad country shading cannot resolve the uncertain Laos and Yunnan range margins or define seasonal care.
