🔤 Taxonomy
Crotalus molossus is the black-tailed rattlesnake. Current Reptile Database treatment retains C. m. molossus, C. m. nigrescens and C. m. oaxacus, while noting that molecular lineages may eventually require further change. Crotalus estebanensis and C. ornatus are separate species.
The name C. ornatus is especially important: it was revalidated in 2012 for eastern black-tailed rattlesnakes, including populations historically labelled molossus in Texas and central/eastern New Mexico. Old labels and colour are insufficient. Preserve exact locality, parentage, photographs and the authority used for identification.
📌 Description
This is a robust, often dark-tailed rattlesnake, commonly 75-120 cm and occasionally around 130 cm. It occupies rocky slopes, canyons, woodland and scrub from the southwestern United States through much of Mexico. It climbs confidently onto rock shelves, shrubs and low trees, so useful height and secure elevated routes matter.
Venom composition varies between lineages and with age. That is a clinical reason to communicate exact identity, not a basis for ranking a captive as “mild”. Every bite is a medical emergency requiring hospital assessment.

🌍 Distribution
In current usage, C. molossus sensu stricto occurs in Arizona and western/southwestern New Mexico and broadly through Mexico; the species complex extends through numerous mountain and plateau regions to Oaxaca. Records from Texas and central or eastern New Mexico require reassessment as C. ornatus, and old maps may combine the two.
The three retained molossus subspecies cover different Mexican regions, with oaxacus restricted to Oaxaca in the current database treatment. A country-level map cannot resolve mountain isolates, contact zones or revised names. Captive climate and breeding decisions must use verified locality.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 21 August 2026: C. molossus is not listed by CITES, but the whole genus Crotalus is listed in EU Annex D under Regulation (EU) 2026/1383; Bern is not relevant to its native range. Mexico lists it as Pr (subject to special protection) under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. Collection, possession, transport and commercial use remain subject to Mexican wildlife law and, in the United States, applicable state, tribal, county, municipal and protected-area rules.
Venomous-animal licences, premises inspection, liability cover, transport conditions and notification duties vary by jurisdiction. Confirm the exact scientific name accepted by every authority—especially where old records say molossus but current taxonomy indicates ornatus. Retain permits, invoice, lawful-origin evidence, locality and parentage records.
🤌 Husbandry
Keep one snake in a restricted venomous room with a locked secondary barrier. The primary enclosure needs two positively lockable shift hides, protected service access and a written door protocol. Isolate and visually confirm the whole animal before opening; a visible black tail does not prove where the head is.
Quarantine for at least 90 days in a simple inspectable enclosure with dedicated tools. Track weight, meals, sheds, faeces, respiration and mouth condition; request veterinary parasite testing when origin warrants it. House singly outside controlled reproductive introductions.
💡 Lighting
Provide 10-14 hours of bright visible light with gradual seasonal change and complete darkness at night. Create lit shelves and shaded routes so the animal can choose exposure. All lamps and wiring stay outside primary containment or behind locked guards.
Low-level UVB may be offered as a measured Ferguson Zone 1 opportunity. Check at the highest accessible perch and preserve full shade. An elevated basking shelf must not bring the snake within unsafe distance of a hot guard.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain ambient air of 23-28°C, a limited basking surface of 30-33°C, a cool retreat of 19-23°C and nights around 15-21°C. Measure both air and elevated surfaces, thermostat and guard every heater, and use an independent high-temperature alarm.
The range spans Sonoran foothills, temperate uplands and southern Mexican mountains. Some well-documented northern adults may undergo winter dormancy around 8-14°C, whereas applying that schedule to an unknown or southern lineage can be harmful. Cool only healthy, established adults under a locality-led specialist plan; do not cool juveniles, thin, sick or newly acquired animals.
💧 Humidity and water
Aim for 35-55% ambient humidity with strong cross-ventilation, plus one ventilated retreat at 55-70% during shedding. Locality and season may justify modest adjustment, but the enclosure should never remain stagnant or uniformly wet.
Supply a stable bowl of clean water through protected access. Monitor body mass, urates and sheds. Repeated soaking, wheezing or incomplete sheds call for a husbandry and veterinary review rather than indiscriminate misting.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Provide at least 150 x 75 x 90 cm for an adult. Use anchored shelves and stout branches, several tight but inspectable hides, two lockable shifts, a clear floor lane and a protected service port. Support heavy rock-like décor from the enclosure base and eliminate fall, crush and pinch hazards.
Use 5-8 cm of low-dust mineral soil, coarse sand and leaf litter according to locality. Avoid loose stacks, sharp wire, dusty powders, aromatic wood and permanently wet substrate. Every vent, track and cable opening must be secure against neonates as well as adults.
🐁 Feeding
Wild black-tailed rattlesnakes consume mammals, birds, lizards and other vertebrates; recent complex-level records reinforce that diet can vary by lineage and opportunity. In captivity, appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents form a practical whole-prey diet. Offer adults one moderate meal every 14-21 days and adjust to weight, build and season.
Feed through a protected port with long tongs. Never use live rodents. Confirm the snake behind a locked barrier before retrieving refused prey, and keep a permanent weight and feeding record.
🛡 Operational safety and emergencies
Never free-handle, pin, neck or manually restrain this species for routine work. Use lockable shifts, suitable hooks, transparent shields and protected ports. Two trained adults attend every primary opening. Veterinary procedures require a pre-arranged professional anaesthetic and containment plan.
Before acquisition, inform the receiving hospital or poison centre of exact taxon and locality. Confirm the regional North American crotalid antivenom and monitoring pathway. The 2025 venom study found substantial lineage and age-related variation and different antivenom neutralising potency; private antivenom possession and home treatment are not safe substitutes for hospital care.
After a bite, withdraw, call emergency services, remove constricting items, keep the patient still with the limb neutrally supported and follow poison-centre advice. Do not cut, suck, ice, shock, massage or use a tourniquet. Maintain a written escape response covering room isolation, public exclusion, accountability, secure capture containers and named decision-makers.
🥚 Breeding notes
The species is viviparous, with roughly 3-12 young a prudent planning range. Pair only locality-compatible, correctly identified adults through shift compartments. Never cross molossus with ornatus or mix uncertain lineages to produce untraceable stock. Prepare individual secure neonate housing and lawful placements before introduction.
🩺 Common problems
- Obesity from oversized meals or frequent feeding.
- Dehydration or retained shed from inadequate local humidity, illness or poor water access.
- Burns and overheating on exposed elevated basking surfaces.
- Falls or crushing injuries from insecure branches and rockwork.
- Respiratory disease following stagnant moisture or inappropriate cooling.
- Mites, internal parasites and stomatitis, especially in wild-origin animals.
- Taxonomic record failure, which undermines breeding, legal and medical decisions.
Hands-on home treatment is unsafe. Lock the animal into a shift and use an experienced reptile veterinarian.
📌 Conclusion
C. molossus requires a licensed specialist facility that can combine secure climbing structure with protected contact and preserve exact locality through changing taxonomy. Animals without dependable provenance should not enter breeding programmes.
