Baja California Rattlesnake
🔤 Taxonomy
Crotalus enyo is the accepted Baja California or Lower California rattlesnake. The Reptile Database currently lists C. e. enyo, the west-coast C. e. furvus and island C. e. cerralvensis; published treatments do not agree completely on every subspecies boundary.
Record peninsula or island locality and parentage rather than relying on a subspecies label. A Cerralvo-island line, the restricted Rosario-area form and a southern Cape animal must not be blended into an anonymous “Baja” stock.
📌 Description
This is a relatively small rattlesnake, usually 45-75 cm and reported to about 90 cm, with a narrow head and proportionally large eyes. It occupies arid scrub, rocky slopes, washes and thornscrub from the middle Baja California peninsula south to the Cape and on several Gulf islands.
It is often active at dusk or night and uses crevices, vegetation and burrows to avoid exposed daytime heat. Small size and a sometimes restrained defensive display do not reduce the medical consequence of envenomation. It is an expert, display-only species for licensed specialist facilities.

🌍 Distribution
C. enyo is endemic to Mexico. It occurs on the Baja California peninsula from the Río San Telmo/El Rosario region and the Gulf side southward to Cabo San Lucas, with populations on islands including San Marcos, Carmen, San José, San Francisco, Espíritu Santo and Cerralvo. Exact island lists and taxon assignments vary among revisions.
The peninsula spans cool Pacific-influenced coasts, extremely arid central landscapes and warmer southern thornscrub. A species-wide enclosure cannot be tuned from “Baja desert” alone; the source locality determines seasonal timing and acceptable night cooling.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 21 August 2026: C. enyo is not listed in CITES. The genus-level Crotalus spp. entry places it in EU Annex D under Regulation (EU) 2026/1383; the Bern Convention is not relevant. The broad CITES proposal at CoP20 was rejected, so Annex D import monitoring must not be misreported as a CITES listing.
Mexico lists C. enyo as Amenazada (Threatened, A) and endemic under NOM-059-SEMARNAT. NOM status does not itself authorize collection, keeping, transport or export: federal wildlife permits and lawful-origin documents remain essential, while island and protected-area access can add stricter rules. Destination dangerous-animal law may require licensing, inspection or prohibit possession. Verify every step in writing and preserve locality and export history.
🤌 Husbandry
Keep one animal in a locked enclosure inside an access-controlled escape-proof room. The primary enclosure must contain at least two compartments or a full-body shift that closes from outside. Confirm the entire snake behind a barrier before any door opens; a head seen in a crevice is not a complete count.
Use protected contact only. Two trained adults attend primary openings; one controls the task and the other watches the snake, door and communications. No free-handling, tailing, pinning, necking or routine manual restraint is acceptable. Arrange veterinary anaesthesia and containment before a clinical need arises.
Quarantine at least 90 days in separate airspace where possible, with paper or a thin disposable mineral substrate, simple shift hides and dedicated tools. Record weight, meals, sheds, faeces and respiration, and request veterinary parasite testing for wild-origin or poorly documented stock. House singly; provenance and safe observation outweigh any speculative benefit from cohabitation.
💡 Lighting
Provide bright visible light for 10-14 hours with gradual seasonal changes and full darkness at night. Optional low-output UVB around Ferguson Zone 1 can cover part of the warm zone, but a completely shaded route and dark shift refuge are mandatory.
Keep all lamps, probes and cables outside the primary enclosure or behind locked guards. Strong light without shade can force a crepuscular snake to remain hidden and can overheat rock surfaces.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain 24-29°C daytime air, a small 32-35°C basking surface, a 21-24°C cool hide and nights of 18-22°C. Measure air and surface separately, guard and thermostat all heat, and use an independent high-temperature alarm.
Rocky Baja habitats become much hotter than the temperatures animals actually occupy. Never heat the full floor. Do not impose a universal deep brumation: northern Pacific, central desert, southern Cape and island localities experience different winters. A mild seasonal reduction is only for healthy, established, documented adults under a deliberate breeding plan.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain strong cross-ventilation and roughly 35-55% ambient humidity. During pre-shed, offer one ventilated hide at 55-70%; do not make the entire substrate damp. Coastal or southern provenance can justify different short-term microclimates, not constant condensation.
Provide a stable bowl of fresh water through protected access. Desert adaptation never justifies withholding it. Persistent soaking, poor sheds or weight loss should trigger a review of heat, hydration, mites and disease.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Provide at least 120 x 60 x 60 cm for one adult, with more floor area for a large male. Use 8-12 cm of compactable sand-mineral soil, secure low rock ledges, anchored cork, dry scrub cover, a hide in each thermal zone and a clear inspection lane.
All doors, tracks, ventilation and cable gaps must contain a neonate. Avoid loose rock stacks, sharp volcanic fragments, fine dust, calcium sand, aromatic wood and décor that must be lifted while the animal is present. The shift should allow water and waste service without reaching over the snake.
🐁 Feeding
Field work shows mammals, lizards and even large centipedes in the diet; larger snakes use more mammals but do not abandon other prey completely. In captivity, appropriately sized frozen-thawed mice provide a controllable staple. Juveniles may feed every 7-14 days; established adults generally every 10-21 days.
Use a protected feeding port or a confirmed shift. Never offer live rodents or move the snake to a loose tub. Whole prey needs no routine supplement. Track weight and body contour because this small species can be overfed easily.
🛡 Operational safety and emergencies
Maintain and rehearse written opening, bite, escape, fire, transport and power-loss procedures. If the animal is not positively located, stop. An escape response must isolate the room, exclude the public, account for every person and animal and specify search sectors, secure capture containers and decision authority.
Before acquisition, give the receiving hospital and poison centre the accepted species name, exact Mexican locality and facility access plan. Ask a medical toxicologist to review antivenom and monitoring arrangements. Private antivenom ownership or administration is not a treatment pathway.
After a bite, withdraw safely, call emergency services, remove constricting items, keep still and follow poison-centre directions. Do not cut, suck, ice, massage, shock or tourniquet the limb, and do not delay transport to catch the snake. There is no home treatment.
🥚 Breeding notes
C. enyo is viviparous; captive reports describe two to seven young, with births from summer into early autumn. Timing should follow documented locality rather than a generic North American rattlesnake calendar.
Introduce only healthy, locality-compatible adults through shift compartments. Prepare separate neonate-proof enclosures and lawful placements before pairing. Neonates are medically significant venomous animals from birth and require adult-level inventory, escape and hospital controls.
🩺 Common problems
- Overheating: whole-floor heat removes the crevice refuge used in nature.
- Obesity: frequent adult meals rapidly erase the normal body outline.
- Dehydration or retained shed: review water, the humid refuge, heat and illness without soaking the whole enclosure.
- Respiratory disease and stomatitis: discharge, bubbles, wheeze or mouth lesions need prompt veterinary care.
- Mites and internal parasites: a major quarantine issue with wild-origin or undocumented stock.
- Provenance loss: unlabeled island or peninsula lines lose scientific and breeding value permanently.
Secure the snake in its shift before veterinary intervention. Hands-on home treatment is unsafe.
📌 Conclusion
The Baja California rattlesnake requires more than a dry box: it needs locality-specific seasonality, reliable hydration, lawful Mexican provenance and protected-contact systems. Acquisition is defensible only where double containment, trained backup and hospital response already exist.
