Crotalus atrox Baird & Girard, 1853 is the accepted scientific name. “Texas diamondback” appears in older books and in the trade, but it is the same species, not a separate locality or subspecies.

📌 Description
The western diamondback is a heavy-bodied, medically significant pit viper. Most adults are about 90-150 cm long, exceptionally large animals can exceed 180 cm, and reported captive longevity commonly reaches 15-25 years. Its adult size, long strike range, strong feeding response, large venom yield, and speed make it an expert-only display animal.
The rattle is a warning mechanism, not a promise that the snake will warn before striking. A quiet, retreating animal remains fully dangerous. This species is not a first venomous snake, and ownership should never be used as a substitute for supervised professional training.

🌍 Distribution
The native range covers the south-western United States and northern to central Mexico. In the United States it includes much of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona and parts of southern California, Oklahoma and neighbouring states. Records extend through several dry and seasonally dry regions of Mexico.
The species uses deserts, semi-desert scrub, dry grassland, rocky slopes, thorn scrub and open woodland. It shelters in rodent burrows, rock cracks and other buffered retreats. That range does not justify a uniformly hot, bare box: the enclosure must provide deep shade, secure hides and a real cool zone.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 21 August 2026: Crotalus atrox is not listed in the current CITES Appendices. A proposal to include Crotalus and Sistrurus species in Appendix II was rejected at CITES CoP20 in December 2025. Commission Regulation (EU) 2026/1383 nevertheless includes Crotalus spp. in EU Annex D, so EU import reporting and current wildlife-trade procedures must be checked. The species is not native to Europe, so the Bern Convention is not relevant.
Those trade listings do not decide whether a private person may possess the snake. Venomous-animal laws can require a licence, approved premises, inspections, liability insurance, escape and bite protocols, restrictions on transport, or a complete prohibition. Rules may exist at national, regional and municipal level. Confirm them in writing before acquisition and again before moving, breeding, selling or transferring the animal.
Retain the invoice, breeder and parent-stock details, import or transfer records, photographs and the date of every legal check. The scientific name and number of animals should also appear on the enclosure and emergency record.
🤌 Husbandry
Safe husbandry begins with the building, not the hook. The enclosure belongs in a locked, access-controlled, escape-resistant room with good visibility, sealed service penetrations and no uninformed visitors, children or free-roaming pets. The cage itself needs positive locks, shatter-resistant viewing panels, tool-operated service access and a lockable shift box so routine cleaning can be completed with the snake physically separated.
The keeper should have documented, hands-on training from a competent institution or mentor, species-appropriate tools, a second trained person for non-routine work, and a written escape and bite response agreed with local emergency services. Free-hand contact is unacceptable. Do not rely on gloves, pinning or improvised restraint for ordinary maintenance; veterinary examination and invasive procedures require an experienced reptile veterinarian and planned professional restraint.
Before the snake arrives, identify the emergency number and receiving hospital, prepare a current species/venom information sheet, and agree how responders can enter the room without creating another exposure. Antivenom selection and administration are medical decisions; a privately purchased vial is not an emergency plan.
Quarantine a new animal for at least 90 days in a simple, secure enclosure in a separate air space where practical. Use dedicated tools and record weight, meals, defecation, sheds and behaviour. Wild-caught or poorly documented animals warrant an examination and faecal testing by an experienced reptile veterinarian. Do not cohouse western diamondbacks; solitary housing makes feeding, observation and emergency control safer.
💡 Lighting
Provide a consistent 10-12-hour light cycle and broad visible illumination. A low-output UVB area can be offered, but UVB is not a replacement for dietary whole prey or correct heat. Arrange it as a gentle gradient and give the snake full shade in every temperature zone. Measure output at snake level and guard every lamp so the animal cannot touch it.
Seasonal activity changes with temperature and locality. Adjusting day length slightly through the year is reasonable; leaving lights or heat on continuously is not.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Use overhead, thermostatically controlled heat to create a basking surface of 32-35°C. General daytime air can remain 24-29°C, with a hide or retreat at 21-24°C. A night drop to roughly 18-23°C suits healthy adults, but the enclosure must warm predictably each day. Measure surface and air temperatures with independent instruments; never judge a rock or hide by touch.
Hot rocks and unguarded internal heaters cause burns. A uniformly hot enclosure removes the snake’s only defence against overheating, while persistent cold after feeding contributes to regurgitation and illness.
Winter cooling is not routine maintenance. Breeding programmes sometimes cool conditioned adults to about 10-16°C after fasting and confirming that the gut is empty. This should not be attempted with juveniles, new arrivals, thin, dehydrated or sick snakes, or without redundant temperature monitoring and specialist experience.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain a generally dry, ventilated enclosure, commonly around 30-50% relative humidity. Supply a stable bowl of fresh water at all times and clean it immediately after contamination. During pre-shed, offer one enclosed retreat with slightly damp moss or soil so the snake can choose higher humidity without the entire cage becoming wet.
Constant spraying, damp substrate and poor ventilation encourage scale inflammation, blister disease and respiratory problems. In contrast, very dry air with no humid refuge can contribute to dysecdysis. The useful target is a dry enclosure with a small controllable moisture option.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
For one adult, use at least 180 x 90 x 75 cm; exceptionally large specimens benefit from more floor area. Every ventilation opening and cable route must remain secure against a neonate, not merely the current adult. The shift box, doors and locks should be operable without placing hands inside the occupied space.
Provide:
- at least two snug hides, one in the warm half and one in the cool half
- 8-12 cm of compactable soil-and-clay or soil-and-sand mix, kept mostly dry
- firmly anchored rocks, cork and low branches that cannot collapse
- visual cover without clutter that hides the snake during a safety check
- a heavy water bowl and unobstructed transfer route to the shift box
Quarantine paper makes droppings, mites and regurgitation easy to see. Loose substrate is appropriate only after health is established. Feed from a clean tile or tray so damp prey does not collect grit; pure loose sand, aromatic wood, cedar, sharp stone and unstable rock piles are poor choices.
Count and visually locate the snake before opening any barrier and again before leaving the room. Keep a written enclosure count when more than one venomous animal is maintained on the premises.
🪳 Feeding
Use frozen-thawed whole rodents from a reliable source. Offer prey with long tools while the animal remains in its enclosure or shift compartment; moving a rattlesnake to a separate feeding tub creates unnecessary exposure. Prey should make only a modest bulge, not distend the body heavily.
Growing juveniles may feed every 7-14 days. Most adults maintain better body condition on one suitable meal every 14-21 days, adjusted for size, season and activity. Western diamondbacks readily become obese in captivity; a sharply widening tail base, buried spine and heavy folds are reasons to lengthen the interval, not to search for larger prey.
Do not offer live rodents except under a veterinarian-directed exceptional circumstance. A live rodent can injure a snake that does not strike immediately. Whole vertebrate prey needs no routine calcium or vitamin dusting.
🩺 Common problems
- Obesity: common with large weekly meals; monitor weight and body outline rather than feeding response.
- Dysecdysis: retained skin or eye caps point to dehydration, absent humid retreat, illness or ectoparasites; do not attempt close manual removal.
- Respiratory infection: open-mouth breathing, bubbles, wheezing or an abnormal raised-head posture require isolation and urgent reptile-veterinary assessment.
- Dermatitis and blister disease: reddened or blistered belly scales are associated with wet, dirty substrate and require prompt correction and veterinary care.
- Mites and internal parasites: repeated soaking, black specks, poor body condition or abnormal faeces justify strict isolation and diagnosis before treatment.
- Burns and regurgitation: review heater guarding, thermostat operation, the temperature gradient, prey size and post-feeding disturbance.
A bite is a medical emergency even when there is little immediate pain or swelling. Move away from the snake, call emergency services, remove rings and other constricting items, keep the person still, and follow local medical instructions. Do not cut, suck, ice or electrically treat the wound, and do not apply a tight tourniquet. Never delay transport while trying to catch the snake; the enclosure label and a photograph taken beforehand provide identification.
📌 Conclusion
Crotalus atrox is appropriate only for a legally compliant expert facility that already has double containment, contact-free servicing, trained backup and a tested medical response. If any one of those elements is missing, the correct husbandry decision is not to acquire the snake.
