Endive
Endive is a cultivated plant from the Cichorium genus, closely related to wild chicory. Available year-round from shops, it is particularly valuable as a winter food for herbivorous reptiles when wild plants are not accessible.
🌿 Description and Varieties
Cichorium endivia comes in two main types:
- Curly endive / Frisée (var. crispum) — with densely frilled, deeply cut leaves; more bitter; stronger flavour
- Broad-leaf endive / Escarole (var. latifolium) — with wider, softer leaves; less bitter; more readily accepted by reptiles
Both types are suitable for feeding. Leaves are light green with paler, nearly white midribs; inner leaves are more blanched due to shading during cultivation.
🍽 Edible Parts
- Leaves — the primary food part; fed fresh
The darker outer leaves are richer in vitamins and chlorophyll than the pale inner ones. Prefer these when feeding.
📊 Nutritional Value
- Calcium: moderate (~52–80 mg / 100 g fresh weight)
- Phosphorus: low (~45–54 mg / 100 g)
- Ca:P ratio: approximately 1:1 to slightly favorable — lower than wild species but acceptable
- Vitamin A (β-carotene): good, especially in dark green outer leaves
- Vitamin K: very good
- Inulin: present — prebiotic effect
- Bitter compounds: mild — less pronounced than wild chicory
🐢 Suitable For
- Tortoises (Testudo spp., Centrochelys sulcata, Geochelone elegans, and others)
- Iguanas (Iguana iguana)
- Uromastyx (Uromastyx spp.)
- Bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) — as a supplement
Endive is particularly useful as a winter supplement when wild plants are not available. It combines well with rocket, chicory, dandelion, and meadow grasses.
🌱 How to Source It
Endive is readily available from grocery stores and supermarkets year-round. When selecting:
- Prefer organic endive where available
- Choose heads with dark green outer leaves — these are richer in nutrients
- Rinse well before feeding
Note: Belgian endive (witloof) is a separate product — Cichorium intybus var. foliosum, grown in darkness. Its pale, blanched leaves are significantly lower in vitamins and are not a preferred choice for regular use with reptiles.
⚠️ Precautions
- Rinse leaves before feeding
- Do not feed wilted or mouldy plant material
- For shop-bought endive, wash thoroughly to remove any pesticide residues
📌 Conclusion
Endive is a practical and reliable food option for herbivorous reptiles with year-round availability. Prefer the broad-leaf type (escarole) for easier acceptance, and include endive as part of a mixed diet alongside calcium-richer wild plants.
