📌 Description
Varanus pilbarensis is a monitor lizard that reaches about 40–50 cm. It is intelligent, powerful for its size, and far more demanding than a typical pet lizard. This is a display and advanced husbandry species, not a casual handling animal.
☠️ Venom
Varanus pilbarensis is a monitor lizard and should be treated as mildly venomous. Monitor venom is not comparable to dangerous front-fanged snake venom, but bites can be deep, painful and contaminated with oral bacteria, and swelling or prolonged soreness can occur.
The practical safety rule is prevention: do not hand-feed, do not restrain the animal casually, and use calm tools and enclosure design to avoid bites. Any serious monitor bite should be cleaned thoroughly and assessed by a medical professional, especially if it is deep, bleeding heavily, swelling, or showing signs of infection.
🌍 Distribution
Varanus pilbarensis is restricted to the Pilbara region of Western Australia, especially rocky ranges, boulder fields, gorges and eroded plateaus. It is a small saxicolous monitor whose range does not overlap neatly with every other Australian dwarf monitor sold in the hobby.
Recent taxonomic work split some southern Pilbara animals into Varanus hamersleyensis, so old “Pilbara rock monitor” labels may not always describe the same animal precisely. True V. pilbarensis should be treated as a northern Pilbara rock specialist.
In captivity, this usually means:
- hot, dry, rocky structure with many tight crevices
- basking shelves and stone/cork retreats that allow secure wedging
- good ventilation with a small humid refuge or lightly moistened retreat
- small, appropriately sized prey and careful monitoring of body condition
- more usable rock surface than open empty floor

⚖️ Legal status
As checked against current official sources in April 2026, Varanus pilbarensis falls under the CITES Appendix II listing for Varanus species. Under EU wildlife-trade rules, that generally means Annex B unless a stricter listing applies. The species is not native to Europe, so the Bern Convention is not normally relevant. National rules on import, sale, transport, breeding, and proof of legal origin may still apply. Captive-bred animals with reliable origin records are preferable.
🤌 Husbandry
Keep V. pilbarensis alone unless an experienced breeder is making a planned, supervised introduction. A small monitor can still injure or chronically suppress a cage mate, and a pair resting together is not proof that both animals have equal access to heat, food and retreats. Every permanent enclosure needs a lock: this species can flatten itself into narrow gaps and test sliding-door tracks, cable ports and ventilation seams.
An adult should have at least 90 x 60 x 60 cm, with more length and climbing surface strongly preferred. Published breeding husbandry has used 100 x 60 x 60 cm for a male and 120 x 60 x 60 cm for females. Those dimensions are useful context, not a ceiling. Shelves, ledges and connected rock faces should let the animal travel between heat, light and cover without repeatedly crossing exposed empty floor.
A juvenile can begin in roughly 60 x 40 x 40 cm if prey, droppings and hydration can be monitored, but it still needs a complete thermal and UVB gradient. Upgrade before the tail is forced against walls or the monitor begins persistent pacing. Very large, bare juvenile enclosures can make observation difficult; a smaller complex enclosure is better than a large empty box.
Quarantine every newcomer away from the established collection for at least 60–90 days. Use separate tools, removable hides and plain paper or another easily inspected surface initially; record weight, food, feces and sheds. Animals with uncertain origin, diarrhea, weight loss or persistent poor appetite warrant fecal examination and assessment by a reptile veterinarian before transfer to the permanent naturalistic setup.
This is primarily a display animal. Build cooperation with a feeding target, a transport tube or box, and predictable servicing routines. Let the monitor approach rather than chasing it around the enclosure. Never lift it by the tail or drag it from a crevice; forced extraction can injure the spine, toes and jaw and teaches the animal to defend its refuge.
💡 Lighting
Use bright, broad visible illumination as well as UVB; a dim enclosure with one dazzling spot does not reproduce the choices available on an open rock face. A 10–12 hour baseline photoperiod is practical. A published V. pilbarensis breeding setup used bright 6500 K LEDs, a desert T5 UVB lamp and a longer spring/summer day, which supports providing both strong visible light and controlled seasonality.
Treat the species as a Ferguson Zone 3 sun-basker unless better species-specific measurements become available. A practical starting target is about UVI 2–4 at the monitor’s back on the main basking shelf, with shaded crevices below UVI 1 and fully dark retreats. Do not choose a lamp by percentage alone. Measure with a Solarmeter 6.5 at animal height after allowing the lamp to warm up, repeat the reading through any mesh, and recheck after moving decor or replacing the tube. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement interval unless meter readings show an earlier decline.
Mount UVB and heat overhead so the animal receives them together while basking, but guard every lamp the monitor could touch. An LED daylight bar can illuminate the rest of the enclosure without raising every retreat temperature.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Offer a broad basking surface around 50–60°C, daytime warm-side air around 28–34°C, cool retreats around 24–28°C and nights around 20–24°C. The surface must be wide enough to warm the whole body, not just one shoulder. A stack with several levels lets the monitor select different surface temperatures without leaving cover completely.
Measure the basking surface with an infrared thermometer and air temperatures with at least two shaded digital probes. An IR gun does not measure air, while a hanging dial does not reveal a dangerously hot slate. Control each heat source with an appropriate dimming thermostat, place the probe where it cannot be displaced, and verify readings independently. The goal is a hot surface plus genuinely cool refuges—not 50°C air throughout the enclosure. Do not impose winter cooling on a thin, sick, juvenile or newly acquired animal.
💧 Humidity and water
Keep most exposed surfaces dry and well ventilated, generally around 30–50% relative humidity, while maintaining at least one slightly humid retreat around 50–65%. A deep pocket of packed sand-loam beneath a sheltered hide buffers moisture more safely than spraying the whole enclosure. The substrate below should be faintly damp, never swampy or sour-smelling.
Provide a stable bowl of fresh water large enough for drinking and incidental soaking, change it daily, and clean it immediately after fouling. Occasional light spraying near a refuge can stimulate drinking, but persistent condensation, wet rock and stale air indicate poor moisture management. Check hydration through regular weight records, normal urates and clean sheds rather than trusting a single hygrometer reading.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Build the rock structure before adding loose substrate. Bolt shelves to the enclosure or support them directly from the floor so digging cannot undermine them. Foam-backed artificial rock, securely screwed cork and masonry fixed with reptile-safe sealant can reduce weight, but every ledge must support the keeper’s firm pressure before the animal enters. Avoid unstable stone piles and narrow dead ends from which the monitor cannot reverse.
Provide roughly 15–30 cm of firmly packed sand and sandy loam where enclosure height allows. It should hold a shallow scrape without collapsing or coating every prey item. Avoid calcium sand, crushed walnut, sharp gravel and uniformly dusty loose sand. Feed from a dish or clean slab when needed so insects are not swallowed with mouthfuls of substrate, especially while a juvenile is learning to hunt.
Use several horizontal and diagonal ledges, cork tubes and wedge-shaped hides at different heights and temperatures. A long-bodied rock monitor needs turning space and routes that protect its tail. Inspect screws, sealant, rock movement and hidden damp areas during routine cleaning rather than dismantling every refuge each day.
🪳 Feeding
Base the diet on varied, well-fed invertebrates: roaches, crickets, locusts, silkworms and other suitable larvae. Prey should be easy to overpower and generally no larger than the monitor’s head. Occasional appropriately sized whole vertebrate prey may add variety for a healthy adult, but rodents should not become a routine calorie source.
Feed growing juveniles small portions daily or every other day and adults measured portions every two to four days, adjusting by weight, activity and body condition rather than the calendar alone. The abdomen should not remain distended after meals, and the tail base should be muscular without becoming bulbous. Weigh juveniles weekly and adults monthly on the same scale; a trend is more useful than judging one photograph.
Gut-load insects for 24–48 hours. With correctly measured UVB, lightly dust most juvenile insect meals and two or three adult meals per week with plain calcium, then use a reptile multivitamin at the product’s conservative interval. D3-containing products may be used less often when UVB is reliable; do not layer multiple vitamin products or exceed their labels. Reproductive females and animals with abnormal calcium status need veterinary-led adjustment, not indiscriminate heavy dusting.
Release a few insects into safe areas or hide them in smooth-sided cups and crevices to encourage searching, but remove uneaten crickets before they can bite a resting lizard. Tong feeding is useful for target training; keep fingers out of the feeding response.
🩺 Common problems
Thermal burns can begin before a keeper notices obvious blistering. Darkened or pale patches, repeated avoidance of one ledge and sudden agitation under a lamp require an immediate temperature and guard check. Gaping everywhere, weakness after heating or frantic escape attempts can indicate overheating; move the animal to a safe moderate temperature while arranging veterinary advice rather than rapidly chilling it.
Retained shed around toes and tail tips, sunken eyes, tacky saliva and hard urates point toward dehydration or an inadequate humid refuge. Swollen limbs, a soft jaw, tremors or poor climbing raise concern for metabolic bone disease and require review of UVB, calcium, diet and veterinary assessment. Low heat, dehydration, oversized meals and substrate ingestion can contribute to impaction; persistent straining, abdominal swelling or lack of feces is not a reason to give home remedies.
Also watch for obesity, internal parasites in animals of uncertain origin, respiratory infection associated with cold damp stagnant conditions, and wounds caused by enclosure mates or unstable decor. Record appetite and weight so a gradual decline is visible. Repeated refusal to feed, breathing noise, discharge, swelling, loss of coordination, a serious bite wound or suspected burn needs a reptile-experienced veterinarian promptly.
📌 Conclusion
Varanus pilbarensis suits an experienced keeper who enjoys observing a fast, shy rock specialist and is prepared to measure heat and UVB rather than guess. Have the adult enclosure, quarantine space, secure rockwork and live-food supply ready before purchase; its small body does not make its environmental or record-keeping needs small.
