🔤 Taxonomy
Petaurus breviceps is the accepted name for the sugar glider covered by this article, but the name has historically been applied much more broadly. A 2021 integrative revision separated the Australian complex into P. breviceps, P. notatus, and P. ariel. Genetic work published in 2025 found that sampled captive populations in Europe and the United States were best assigned to Petaurus papuanus, not P. breviceps sensu stricto.
That distinction matters when buying, breeding, or recording an animal. “Sugar glider” is a trade name, not proof of species identity. Ask for lineage and origin records, do not represent an untested pet as genetically verified P. breviceps, and never mix animals sold under different taxonomic labels for conservation breeding.

📌 Description
Sugar gliders are small nocturnal marsupials, not rodents. A gliding membrane called the patagium runs from wrist to ankle, the long tail steers in the air, and the large eyes support night activity. Typical captive adults weigh about 80–135 g for females and 100–170 g for males. Total length varies with lineage and tail length, commonly about 24–40 cm. With excellent care, 9–15 years is realistic.
Their small body hides demanding welfare needs. They are social colony animals, travel through complex arboreal space at night, scent-mark, vocalize, and eat a nutritionally unusual mixture of plant exudates and animal matter. A lone glider, a small decorative cage, or a fruit-heavy improvised diet creates serious risk even when the animal initially appears tame.
🌍 Distribution
Under the revised Australian taxonomy, P. breviceps sensu stricto occurs mainly in forest and woodland east of the Great Dividing Range from southeastern Queensland through New South Wales. Older references often describe a much broader range across northern Australia, New Guinea, and nearby Indonesian islands because they include populations now assigned to other species. The pet trade also contains lineages originating outside the current narrow Australian concept.
Within its native range, the animal uses eucalyptus and acacia woodland, tree hollows, bark, sap and gum resources, and connected canopy. Country-level maps cannot show the narrow coastal distribution, so the highlighted Australia should not be read as occupancy of the whole continent.

⚖️ Legal status
The current CITES Appendices and the EU wildlife-trade Annexes were checked on 5 August 2026; Petaurus breviceps is not specifically listed in either system. It is not relevant to the Bern Convention because it is not native to Europe. This does not make ownership automatically legal. Exotic-mammal rules, animal-welfare standards, import controls, landlord restrictions, and breeder licensing vary by country and locality, while Australian native-wildlife possession and export are separately controlled.
Keep the invoice, breeder identity, transfer history, veterinary records, and the exact scientific name used by the seller. The unresolved identity of many captive lines makes traceability especially important. Avoid wild-caught animals and sellers who cannot explain origin.
🌿 Habitat
Wild gliders sleep together in insulated tree hollows by day and emerge after dark to climb, leap, glide, forage, and defend a home range. Captive housing cannot reproduce that distance, but it can preserve the useful functions: height, long unobstructed movement routes, flexible branches, elevated feeding, several sleeping sites, scent continuity, and visual cover.
They need a social partner of the same kind. Human attention is enrichment, not a substitute for compatible glider companionship. Stable pairs or small groups usually work best; intact mixed-sex groups breed readily, and unfamiliar adults require a cautious introduction process.
🤌 Husbandry
Plan the enclosure and veterinary access before acquiring a bonded pair. For two adults, use a secure cage at least 150 × 90 × 180 cm; larger is strongly preferable. Bar spacing must prevent the head from passing through, doors need positive locks, and the room must be escape-safe. The 90 × 60 × 90 cm veterinary minimum is a lower limit, not an adequate welfare target for animals expected to climb and glide every night.

Quarantine new animals in a separate room with separate tools for at least 30 days, or longer when the exotic-animal veterinarian advises it. Record body weight weekly at first, appetite, droppings, night activity, coat, wounds, and social behaviour. Arrange fecal testing and a veterinary examination before introductions. Never place cages nose-to-nose until infectious and behavioural risks have been assessed.
💡 Lighting
Provide a predictable 10–12-hour light period followed by a genuinely dark night. Bright white or colored “night” lamps disrupt nocturnal behaviour; use a camera that does not emit visible light if observation is needed. Position the cage away from windows where direct sun can overheat sleeping pouches.
UVB is not established as a routine requirement for captive sugar gliders. Vitamin D and calcium must instead be managed within the chosen complete diet protocol. Do not add a UVB lamp or extra vitamin D as a substitute for correcting an unbalanced diet, and never combine supplement schedules from unrelated recipes.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain most usable space at 22–27 °C, with cooler choices around 20–24 °C and night temperatures around 20–26 °C. Veterinary references give a thermoneutral zone of approximately 27–31 °C, but the enclosure must still offer cooler retreats and must not be uniformly heated. Healthy adults can tolerate a wider range briefly; tolerance is not a target.
If room heating is necessary, warm the room or use an inaccessible, thermostatically controlled source outside the cage. Never put a heat mat, unguarded lamp, hot rock, or chewable cable inside. Measure temperatures at sleeping pouches and high and low perches. Persistent torpor, cold extremities, panting, sprawling, unusual hiding, or reduced appetite requires an immediate instrument check and veterinary advice when it does not resolve promptly.
💧 Humidity and water
Aim for 50–70% relative humidity with continuous ventilation and dry sleeping material. Do not keep the cage wet to reach a number. Local humidity can be supported with room humidification or carefully placed moisture-retaining natural materials, while food residue and soaked bedding must be removed every morning.
Provide fresh water at all times. A bottle plus a stable elevated bowl gives redundancy, but both must be checked daily for blockage or contamination. Dehydration can progress quickly in a small sick marsupial; sunken eyes, tacky mouth tissues, weakness, or reduced urine are urgent signs.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Furnish the full height with pesticide-free branches of different diameters, cork, ropes that cannot fray into loops, elevated shelves, foraging cups, and multiple sleeping boxes or seamless pouches. Leave some long diagonal and horizontal routes open for controlled leaps. Every group needs more sleeping and feeding options than dominant animals can monopolize.
Inspect fabric daily. Loose threads can constrict toes, trap claws, or injure the patagium. Avoid cotton wool, frayed rope, open-chain toys, galvanized or damaged coated wire, toxic timber, exposed fasteners, and wheels with center axles or crossbars. If a wheel is used, choose a large glider-safe design with a solid running surface and no pinch points.
Use paper or another low-dust absorbent substrate beneath the cage and spot-clean daily. Rotate enrichment without stripping every familiar scent at once. Supervised exercise must happen only in a closed, glider-proof room with windows, doors, toilets, drains, electrical cables, and other pets secured.
🪳 Feeding
Choose one complete diet plan with an exotic-animal veterinarian and follow it accurately. No single homemade diet has proved ideal, and casually mixing nectar recipes, pellets, fruit, insects, and supplements makes calcium, phosphorus, protein, vitamin D, vitamin A, and iron intake impossible to judge.
A sound plan generally includes:
- a formulated sugar-glider staple or measured nectar/exudate substitute
- an appropriate protein component, often a formulated feed and calcium gut-loaded insects
- controlled portions of suitable vegetables and limited fruit rather than a fruit bowl
- calcium and vitamin supplementation only in the amounts built into that protocol
- fresh food placed on elevated feeding stations after dusk and removed in the morning
Offer several small feeding points so a dominant animal cannot guard the ration. Weigh portions and track each animal’s weight and body condition. Treat insects and fatty foods can rapidly drive obesity. Avoid chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic, avocado, fruit pits and seeds, raw meat or egg, dairy, sugary human food, and insects exposed to pesticides. Cat feces and raw meat are important toxoplasmosis risks.
🩺 Common problems
Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, often called metabolic bone disease, is a major preventable problem. Weak grip, tremors, painful movement, fractures, or hind-limb weakness can follow a calcium-poor or phosphorus-heavy diet. This is an emergency, not a reason to add calcium blindly at home.
Other concerns include obesity, dental disease, diarrhea, dehydration, respiratory infection, parasites, urinary or reproductive disease, patagium and toe injuries, and stress-related overgrooming or self-mutilation. A solitary animal that circles, repeatedly calls, chews itself, or becomes withdrawn needs both medical and social assessment.
Check every animal daily even when the colony shares one sleeping pouch. Rapid weight loss, failure to eat, labored breathing, persistent diarrhea, swelling, bleeding, dragging limbs, inability to climb, prolapsed tissue, or self-injury requires an exotic-animal veterinarian urgently.
📌 Conclusion
Sugar gliders suit keepers prepared for a bonded group, a room-scale tall enclosure, nocturnal noise and activity, exact diet preparation, and specialist veterinary care for more than a decade. Species identity and legal origin should be settled before purchase; tameness alone is not evidence of good welfare or responsible trade.
