🔤 Taxonomy
Ouroborus cataphractus is the accepted scientific name. Older publications and trade paperwork use Cordylus cataphractus. Armadillo girdled lizard and armadillo lizard are common names, but “armadillo lizard” is also applied incorrectly to other cordylids; verify the scientific name on every document.
📌 Description
This compact South African lizard is heavily armoured and famous for gripping its tail in its mouth when threatened, protecting the soft underside with spiny scales. Adults are roughly 16-23 cm long and may live 20-25 years or more.
The species is diurnal, rock-dwelling, and naturally social, but it is not a handling pet. Captive groups can reject newcomers, and adult males may fight. Its rarity, slow reproduction, legal status, and importance of verified captive origin make it an advanced acquisition even though its daily feeding is straightforward.
🌍 Distribution
The species is endemic to western South Africa, from Little Namaqualand in the Northern Cape south toward the Piketberg Mountains and inland around Matjiesfontein in the Western Cape. It uses crevices in rocky slopes and outcrops within semi-arid shrubland.
Winter rainfall drives termite availability and activity. During the dry summer, wild lizards spend more time inside crevices. Captive care should offer a daily gradient and modest seasonal change, not constant desert-level heat.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-08-05: Ouroborus cataphractus is covered by CITES Appendix II and EU Annex B. The Bern Convention is not relevant to this South African species.
Wild collection can damage entire colonies because animals aggregate and reproduce slowly. Buy only clearly documented captive-bred stock. Keep invoices, breeder identity, the older and current scientific names, transfer history, and CITES import or re-export documents where relevant. South African export controls and national ownership, registration, or transport rules may also apply.
🤌 Husbandry
A practical minimum for a single animal or proven compatible pair is 120 x 60 x 60 cm. A group needs more floor area, more crevices than animals, and duplicate basking and feeding positions. Have a separate enclosure ready before attempting any group change.
Do not place unfamiliar adults together and assume natural sociability will solve conflict. Introduce only with careful observation and separate after chasing, blocking, bite attempts, weight loss, or exclusion from heat and food. Quarantine every newcomer alone first.
💡 Lighting
Provide strong visible light and linear T5 UVB over the basking end. Plan around Ferguson Zone 3, with a measurable high-light basking area and deep shaded crevices a few centimetres away. Use approximately 12-14 hours of light in the active season and reduce gradually toward 10 hours during a cooler seasonal cycle.
UVB and heat should come from above. Replace lamps according to measured output or schedule, and never use coloured night lighting.

Laboratory work found an average preferred body temperature near 29.8°C, with most selected values around 26.8-32.6°C. That supports a focused hot rock plus cooler crevices rather than uniformly hot air. Control overhead heat with a thermostat and measure rock surfaces directly.
Experienced breeders sometimes use a gradual 2-3 month winter cooling, but published methods vary widely. Do not cool a new, underweight, sick, or unexamined animal, and never cool while food remains undigested. Seasonal cycling is optional for non-breeding care and should be planned with a reptile veterinarian or experienced program.
💧 Humidity and water
Aim for 40-60% ambient humidity with a slightly more humid crevice during shedding. Light morning misting once or twice weekly may be enough in many rooms; the surface should dry and airflow should remain good. Avoid permanently wet substrate.
Provide a very shallow, stable water dish that small animals and newborns can leave easily. Keep the surrounding area clear so a crevice or rock cannot trap an animal in the water. Replace the water daily.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Build stable, narrow rock crevices using securely bonded stone, slate, or artificial rock. Each animal needs more than one tight retreat where its back can contact the roof. Test the entire structure against collapse before adding an animal.
Use a firm soil/sand/clay substrate or fixed rock floor with small areas of diggable material. Add rough surfaces that support normal claw and femoral-pore wear. Avoid loose unstable stone piles, deep open water, heat rocks, adhesive traps, and any crevice that cannot be inspected.
🪳 Feeding
Use a varied insect diet based on gut-loaded crickets, roaches, locusts where legal, black soldier fly larvae, silkworms, and other appropriate invertebrates. Offer adults food every 2-4 days and juveniles daily or nearly daily in small portions. Waxworms and superworms are fatty and should be occasional.
Wild animals rely heavily on termites and also take beetles, millipedes, and other invertebrates; plant material is occasional rather than the captive staple. Dust feeders with calcium and use a multivitamin according to UVB access and product instructions.
In groups, distribute prey across several stations and watch every animal eat. Remove uneaten insects before they hide in crevices or bite resting lizards.
🥚 Breeding notes
The species is viviparous. Females usually produce one large young, occasionally two, after roughly six to eight months. Mating occurs seasonally and births are slow enough that replacing wild-taken animals through breeding is difficult.
Breeding requires documented unrelated stock, stable compatible groups, seasonal planning, excellent body condition, and a plan for legally transferring the offspring. Do not separate a newborn automatically unless there is aggression or it cannot feed safely.
🧍 Handling and safety
Handle only for inspection and transport. Guide the animal into a small secure container or lift it with the entire body supported. Never force the defensive tail-biting posture, unroll the animal, pull the tail, or extract it from a crevice by force.
The jaws are strong for the animal’s size and the spines can scratch. Children should not handle this species.
🩺 Common problems
Common risks include metabolic bone disease, burns, dehydration, retained shed, toe injuries, bite wounds, mouth infection, impacted femoral pores, parasites, and chronic stress from an unsafe group. Rockwork collapse and deep water are avoidable physical hazards.
Watch for failure to emerge, reduced grip, soft jaw, tremors, swollen limbs or pores, pus in the mouth, repeated chasing, or weight loss. Seasonal appetite changes must be judged against body weight and temperature; persistent decline requires a reptile veterinarian.
📌 Conclusion
The armadillo girdled lizard needs secure crevices, measured overhead heat and UVB, varied insects, cautious group management, and impeccable provenance. Its defensive posture should be admired without ever being provoked.
