Lucihormetica subcincta (Walker, 1868) is the accepted name in GBIF and the Blattodea Species File. The submitted sale spelling “Lucihormetica subcinta” omits the second “c” and should be corrected on labels, invoices, and searches.
Older combinations useful for literature searches are Brachycola subcincta and Hormetica subcincta. “Headlight cockroach” and “glowspot cockroach” are hobby names; the pale pronotal patches are not proven lamps, and work on the related L. verrucosa supports UV reflection and autofluorescence rather than visible bioluminescence.
📌 Description
Adults are about 3.5-4.5 cm, with a dark body, pale wing covers, and paired raised pronotal patches on males. Females are broader and lack the same pronounced male structures. Both stages burrow, and adults can use textured seams and sometimes climb glass.
This is a slow, humidity-dependent display roach, not a production feeder. Male competition and accidental mixing with L. verrucosa are more serious risks than a complicated diet.

🌍 Distribution
Museum and GBIF-mediated records support Colombia and Venezuela. Published locality detail is sparse, and captive stock labels sometimes conflict, so invoices should not be treated as proof of a particular wild population.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-08-22: L. subcincta is not listed by CITES or in EU wildlife-trade Annexes A-D. It is outside the practical scope of the Bern Convention appendices because it is South American, not European native wildlife.
Local import, transport, biosecurity, tenancy, or exhibition rules may still apply. Keep invoice and breeder details, verify cross-border requirements before shipment, and never release animals or culture substrate.
🤌 Husbandry
Use at least 40 × 30 × 30 cm for a breeding group, with fine-mesh cross-ventilation and a latching lid. Give males several separated bark territories. Move animals with cups over a catch tub rather than lifting them by legs or antennae.
Quarantine for 60 days. Permanent species labels and dedicated tools are essential because L. subcincta and L. verrucosa can be confused and should never share an enclosure.
💡 Lighting
UVB is unnecessary. Provide a dim 10-12-hour room-light cycle and broad shaded areas. A low-intensity UVA observation lamp may reveal fluorescence, but it is optional and must not add measurable heat or replace darkness.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Keep 24-28 °C by day, with a small 27-29 °C warm wall and a 21-24 °C cool retreat. Nights can fall to 20-24 °C. Development and breeding slow below about 22 °C; uniform high heat dries tunnels and increases stress.
Use a thermostat and side heat only. Verify substrate temperature at the warm edge rather than relying on room air.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain 60-80% humidity with one damp lower half and a drier surface zone. Pour water into a corner so burrows retain moisture while air and food remain fresh. Saturated substrate is as dangerous as prolonged dryness.
Offer a shallow rough-sided water dish or safe hydrated food. Incomplete molts indicate a failing humid retreat; condensation and fermentation indicate insufficient airflow or excessive feeding.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Provide 8-12 cm of soil/coir, decomposed hardwood leaves, and rotten hardwood, topped with dry litter. Arrange several cork pieces horizontally and on gentle slopes. More territories reduce male abrasion and give freshly molted adults protection.
Avoid conifer wood, pesticide residues, fertilizer, perlite, and heavy décor that can settle into tunnels. Preserve part of the mature substrate during routine cleaning.
🪳 Feeding
Keep hardwood leaves and rotten wood continuously. Feed carrot, squash, sweet potato, greens, apple, pear, or banana two or three times a week. Add a balanced dry diet and a small fish-flake or legume-protein portion weekly.
Place food at several edges so shy nymphs can feed without crossing male territories. Remove wet leftovers within 24-36 hours.
🥚 Breeding
Females retain the ootheca and give birth to live nymphs. Captive observations describe L. subcincta as slower and less prolific than L. verrucosa; a female may take many months to produce a brood. The 10-25 nymph range is a planning estimate because robust species-specific brood statistics are lacking.
Do not disturb a female with a briefly protruding ootheca. Maintain multiple adult females, limit crowding by males, and have housing ready for offspring before breeding.

- No offspring: confirm adult sexes, patience, temperature, food access, and a stable damp zone.
- Male damage: add visual barriers and space, or reduce the number of mature males.
