Orchid Mantis
🔤 Taxonomy
Hymenopus coronatus is the accepted scientific name for the orchid mantis. The trade also uses “walking flower mantis” and “pink orchid mantis.” Colour is variable and is not evidence of a separate form.
This species has extreme sexual dimorphism. Adult females are broad and usually 6-7 cm long; adult males are slender, winged, and often only 2.5-3 cm. Care and feeding must therefore follow the individual’s size and sex, not a generic adult label.
📌 Description
The orchid mantis is a Southeast Asian flower mimic and a visual hunting predator. White, pink, brown, and greenish tones can change across molts, while the expanded leg lobes break up the body’s outline. It does not need an orchid in captivity, but it does need elevated perches, bright diffuse light, moving air, and flying prey.
It is less forgiving than common beginner mantises. Heat without ventilation, constantly wet surfaces, poor access to water droplets, oversized prey, and insufficient hanging room can all cause rapid losses. Individuals are cannibalistic and must be housed alone.

🌍 Distribution
Reliable records place Hymenopus coronatus in tropical Southeast Asia, including Peninsular Malaysia and Indonesia, with records from Thailand and adjacent parts of the region. It occupies warm, humid vegetation where flowers, leaves, prey, shade, and air movement create finer microclimates than a single weather reading suggests.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-08-20: Hymenopus coronatus is not listed in the CITES Appendices, no species-specific listing was found in the EU wildlife-trade annexes, and the Bern Convention is not relevant to this non-European species.
National rules can still control live-insect import, transport, breeding, sale, classroom display, or possession. Keep the invoice, breeder and culture-line details, scientific identification, and any import or transfer paperwork. Verify rules at both origin and destination before shipping; never release an animal or ootheca outdoors.
🤌 Husbandry
House every mantis separately. The enclosure must be at least three times the mantis’s body length in height and about twice its length in width; more usable height is preferable around the final molt. An adult female fits a well-ventilated enclosure around 20 x 20 x 30 cm, while a small nymph is easier to feed and monitor in a secure ventilated cup.
Quarantine new arrivals away from other insects. Use separate tools and record feeding, abdomen condition, molts, feces, and ootheca production. Imported or poorly identified stock may arrive dehydrated, mismolted, old, or exposed to parasites and pesticides.
💡 Lighting
Provide bright, diffuse visible light on an 11-13 hour cycle. UVB has not been established as a requirement. Direct sun and close lamps are dangerous because small mesh enclosures overheat and dry rapidly.
Live plants can improve light structure and drinking surfaces, but no particular flower is necessary. Measure temperature at the upper resting perch rather than assuming the room reading represents the enclosure.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain most of the enclosure at 24-28°C, with an upper warm area no hotter than about 28-30°C and a night drop to 20-23°C. Young nymphs and males overheat especially quickly.
If the room is cool, heat the surrounding air or one side of a larger enclosure with a thermostat. Do not place a cup directly on a heat mat, and do not sacrifice ventilation to retain heat.
💧 Humidity and water
Aim for roughly 60-80% relative humidity, with a brief rise toward 70-85% before a molt. Lightly mist one side or the leaves so the mantis can drink droplets, then let surfaces dry. Constant condensation and stagnant air promote fungal and bacterial growth; very dry air and absent drinking droplets increase dehydration and molting risk.
Do not use a deep water bowl. For tiny nymphs, even a shallow open reservoir is unnecessary and can be hazardous.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Use fine grippy mesh across the ceiling and provide thin diagonal twigs or plant stems that reach it without filling the open space below. The mantis must hang freely through a molt with at least two body lengths of clearance.
A 2-4 cm layer of coir, pesticide-free soil, or absorbent paper can buffer moisture and simplify cleaning. Replace wet or moldy material. Avoid sticky decorations, sharp wire, loose fibres that catch tarsi, and mesh apertures that trap feet or allow first-instar nymphs to escape.
🪳 Feeding
Offer active live prey no larger than the mantis can control safely:
- Drosophila melanogaster for the smallest nymphs
- Drosophila hydei as nymphs grow
- houseflies, greenbottle flies, bluebottle flies, or small moths for larger animals
Flying prey usually produces a stronger feeding response than ground-running insects. Avoid wild-caught insects because of pesticide and parasite risk. Crickets can bite a molting mantis and are a poor default choice; remove all uneaten prey before a molt.
Feed young nymphs daily or every other day and larger animals every two to three days, adjusting to abdomen condition. A constantly distended abdomen suggests overfeeding; a thin, flattened abdomen and repeated prey strikes suggest the interval or prey size needs review.
🥚 Breeding
Females mature later and grow far larger than males. Keep sexes separate until both are mature and well fed. Introductions require close supervision, ample space, and an escape route for the male; cannibalism remains possible even when the female has eaten.
A female usually fixes a foamy ootheca to a branch or enclosure surface. Keep it ventilated at about 25-28°C and 60-80% humidity without spraying it directly or enclosing it in stagnant wet air. Hatching commonly takes about 30-50 days, and one ootheca may release dozens of tiny nymphs. Prepare individual rearing cups and very small prey before hatch day.
🩺 Common problems
- Failed molt: often associated with too little hanging space, dehydration, weak grip, disturbance, or stale wet conditions.
- Falls: heavy pre-molt females need intact ceiling mesh and unobstructed clearance; do not handle a mantis preparing to molt.
- Dehydration: a thin abdomen, poor grip, or lethargy warrants an immediate check of measured temperature and access to safe droplets.
- Overheating: frantic movement followed by collapse can occur quickly in sun or near an uncontrolled lamp.
- Prey injury: remove crickets and other robust prey before the mantis molts.
- Ootheca failure: infertility, excessive wetness, drying, temperature extremes, or poor ventilation can prevent hatch.
Do not pull retained exuviae from a weak animal. Correct the enclosure and seek advice from an experienced invertebrate veterinarian when an injury or decline is severe.
📌 Conclusion
This species suits an experienced mantis keeper who can provide flying prey, controlled warmth, hydration without stagnation, and individual enclosures for offspring. The most important preparation is not decorative planting; it is secure ceiling grip and clear space for every molt.
