🔤 Taxonomy
Euscorpius tergestinus is an accepted species in Euscorpiidae. The 2013 revision restricted it to the northern Adriatic form and restored E. aquilejensis for many populations formerly included under this name. A dark or reddish European Euscorpius cannot be identified reliably by colour; locality and trichobothrial characters are important.
📌 Description
Adults are small, about 2.7–3.8 cm, light brown to reddish with darker carapace and pedipalps. They spend the day in tight karst fissures, beneath stones or in old walls and hunt small arthropods at night. The broad pincers and compact body suit narrow retreats.
The species is not regarded as medically significant, but it is venomous and a sting may be painful or provoke an individual reaction. Keep it as a display animal and move it with a cup and soft brush, never bare hands. Its small body makes escape a more realistic risk than dramatic defensive behaviour.
🌍 Distribution
The revised native range is Slovenia, Croatia and the extreme northeast of Italy around Trieste and the Slovenian border. Records from Austria and the Czech Republic are introduced, while many older Italian and western Balkan records belong to E. aquilejensis or other members of the complex. Typical habitat includes limestone karst, open woodland, stone walls and humid crevices with pronounced seasons.

⚖️ Legal status
As checked on 2026-08-17, E. tergestinus was not specifically listed in CITES, the EU wildlife-trade annexes or the Bern Convention appendices. Those results do not override native-fauna protection. Collection, possession and movement may be restricted by national, regional, municipal or protected-area rules in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. Verify local and national law in writing, buy documented captive-bred stock and never remove stones or animals from a protected site.
🤌 Husbandry
House one animal in a secure top-opening enclosure with ventilation holes too small for juveniles. Apparent clustering beneath a favourable stone in nature does not make communal housing safe; limited captive crevices increase cannibalism. Quarantine a newcomer for 60–90 days with dedicated tools and a simple, countable layout.

For a transfer, place the enclosure inside a larger smooth tub, close the room and guide the scorpion into a clear vial with a soft brush. Check cork and leaf litter before moving any item. Never grip the metasoma or assume a European scorpion is safe to handle.
💡 Lighting
UVB is unnecessary. Use room-level light on a seasonal schedule of about 9 hours in winter to 13 in summer, with complete night darkness and several fully shaded fissures. Never expose the enclosure to direct sun.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain 18–24 °C, with a small 23–26 °C warm area, a 16–20 °C retreat and nights of 14–19 °C. Most heated rooms need no extra source. If heat is necessary, place a thermostatted source on one outer side so damp refuges remain cool.
A controlled 8–14 °C winter period can support an experienced, locality-based breeding project but is not routine care. It must be frost-free, monitored and used only for hydrated, established adults; never cool a juvenile, thin animal or new import.
💧 Humidity and water
Keep the enclosure around 55–75% RH with good airflow and one reliably damp crevice. Add water to one side and allow exposed surfaces on the other to partly dry. A very shallow stable dish is useful. Cold saturation, condensation and mould are not a substitute for a humid hiding gap.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Provide 6–8 cm of soil mixed with leaf mould and a little clay. Secure flat cork and stone against the base before adding substrate, creating several narrow horizontal and vertical gaps. Use a little leaf litter on the damp side. Every rock must be immovable, and lid seams and mesh must contain a 1-cm juvenile.
🪳 Feeding
Offer small crickets, roach nymphs, flies or similar captive-bred prey every 7–10 days; juveniles can receive smaller meals somewhat more often. Remove leftovers within 24 hours and always before a moult or birth. Routine dusting is unnecessary, and wild prey carries pesticide and parasite risks.
🦂 Breeding and young
Pair only accurately identified, locality-compatible adults under close supervision, and separate them after courtship. Seasonal cues may help, but forced chilling is not a shortcut. The species is viviparous; young remain on the mother until the first moult. Keep the unit quiet, remove prey and wait for natural dispersal before placing juveniles singly. Published species-specific litter ranges are limited, so do not plan capacity around a single quoted number.
🩺 Common problems
- Taxonomic mix-up: many older “E. tergestinus” records and sale lines are now E. aquilejensis.
- Overheating: a closed small enclosure can exceed the species’ temperate retreat conditions quickly.
- Cold saturation: wet, poorly ventilated soil promotes fungus and mites.
- Desiccation: a dry enclosure without a damp fissure contributes to failed moults.
- Escape or sting: capture with a cup, not fingers. After a sting, seek poison-centre or medical advice promptly if symptoms extend beyond mild local pain or if the person is vulnerable; do not apply unverified home treatments.
📌 Conclusion
E. tergestinus is a small northern Adriatic crevice specialist, not the widespread species portrayed in older books. Correct identity, moderate seasonal temperatures, a damp-but-aerated refuge and secure solitary housing matter more than added heat. It is a rewarding display animal only for a keeper prepared to respect venom and native-wildlife law.
