Six-spotted Cockroach
🔤 Taxonomy
Eublaberus distanti (Kirby, 1903) is accepted by GBIF and the Blattodea Species File. Older literature may use the original combination Blaberus distanti or the synonym Blaberus biolleyi. Six-spotted, four-spotted, and Trinidad bat-cave cockroach all refer to this species; the number describes the pale marks of nymphs and is not a reliable way to identify every stage.
📌 Description
Adults are broad, winged cockroaches about 5-6.5 cm long. Nymphs are dark, flattened diggers with four to six cream-yellow lateral patches. Adults may expose their wings in courtship, but established captive stock is not known for sustained flight. Males are slimmer and retain visible terminal styli; females have a broader posterior abdomen.
This is a strong, fast-feeding colony animal that spends much of the day below the surface. Its main management issue is not delicacy but biomass: a successful colony quickly produces frass, heat, moisture, and food waste. It is best kept as a display and decomposer culture rather than handled.
🌍 Distribution
Published records place E. distanti from southern Mexico and Central America into northern South America, including Trinidad and Tobago, the Guianas, Colombia, Peru, and Brazil. The species is especially associated with guano-rich caves in Trinidad, but records also come from litter, rotten wood, tree hollows, and bat roosts.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-08-22: E. distanti does not appear in the CITES Appendices, EU wildlife-trade Annexes A-D, or Bern Convention appendices. Absence from those lists is not an import permit. National rules for live invertebrates, plant pests, transport, and institutional housing may still apply.
Buy traceable captive-bred stock and retain the invoice and breeder line. Never release animals or culture substrate. Freeze unwanted eggs, nymphs, and used substrate before disposal where local waste rules permit.
🤌 Husbandry
For a starter colony, use at least 45 × 30 × 30 cm with a latched lid and broad cross-ventilation. Provide several feeding points and cork slabs, but reserve most floor depth for burrowing. Smooth walls reduce escape risk; nevertheless, open the colony inside a catch tub because small nymphs disappear into equipment.

Quarantine additions for 60 days with separate tools. Do not mix Eublaberus species or colour lines: nymphs are easy to confuse, and a mixed colony loses its identification and breeding value.
💡 Lighting
UVB is unnecessary. A dim 10-12-hour day-night rhythm is enough. Keep the bark and substrate shaded; direct sun can overheat a dark tub within minutes even when room temperature seems safe.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Keep most of the enclosure at 24-28 °C and one limited side at 28-30 °C. A 21-24 °C retreat and nights of 20-24 °C let buried animals move away from heat. Cooler colonies survive but mature and reproduce slowly.
Heat a side wall or the room, controlled by a thermostat. Bottom heat is unsafe beneath a deep colony because it reverses the natural cooler-downward gradient and can cook hidden nymphs.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain a lightly moist lower substrate and a drier surface layer. Relative humidity around 55-75% is workable when air moves across the box; raise local moisture for molting rather than soaking the entire container. Persistent condensation, sour smell, or black wet substrate means aeration is inadequate.
Use moisture-rich vegetables and a shallow textured dish or insect-safe water source. Protect small nymphs from open water. A dense colony supplies much of its own humidity, so watering must decrease as numbers rise.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Build 10-15 cm of pesticide-free topsoil or coir mixed with crushed hardwood leaves and soft rotten hardwood. This mimics the loose organic layer into which nymphs retreat; bat guano is neither necessary nor hygienic. Set cork bark on the enclosure floor before adding substrate so burrowing cannot make it collapse.
Avoid cedar, resinous softwood, fertilizer, perlite, sharp mineral litter, and a permanently waterlogged base. Replace contaminated patches rather than stripping the entire established substrate at every clean.
🪳 Feeding
Keep deciduous leaf litter available at all times. Supply a balanced roach diet or grain-legume dry mix, then add squash, carrot, sweet potato, greens, apple, or pear two or three times weekly. A small weekly portion of fish food or another moderate protein source supports growing nymphs.
Their cave ecology does not justify unlimited meat or pet food. High-protein waste rots quickly, smells, and encourages mites and flies. Feed on dishes, size portions to disappear within 24-48 hours, and increase the number of stations before increasing portion depth.
🥚 Breeding
Females form an ootheca, retract it, and incubate it internally before releasing live nymphs; the metadata uses “viviparous,” while specialist literature often says ovoviviparous. A mature female may produce roughly 20-40 young, but published line-specific brood data are limited and temperature, age, and nutrition change the result.
Sex adults by the male styli and abdomen shape. Maintain a female-biased group with many narrow hides. Do not clip adult wings: research on this species found that wing reduction changes male mating success even though these cockroaches rarely fly.
🩺 Common problems
- Hot, sour substrate: an oversized colony is producing more heat and moisture than the ventilation can remove; split it before deaths begin.
- Wing or antenna chewing: increase food access, protein moderation, retreats, and floor area; also check that the lower layer has not dried solid.
- Failed molts: preserve a moist lower refuge and stable surfaces above it.
- Mites and phorid flies: remove protein and fruit residues, corpses, and saturated patches promptly.
- Allergy: frass and shed skins can trigger respiratory allergy; dampen dusty waste and use gloves and suitable respiratory protection.
📌 Conclusion
E. distanti suits a keeper who wants visible adults above a very active burrowing colony and can manage the waste load. Start with deep substrate and generous ventilation, then plan to divide the culture before crowding turns a robust species into an unhealthy one.
