Burmese Beetle-mimic Cockroach
🔤 Taxonomy
Ergaula capucina (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893) is the accepted name. It was described as Homoeogamia capucina from material collected in Burma, now Myanmar. Burmese beetle-mimic cockroach and velvety beetle-mimic cockroach are useful hobby names; neither should be shortened to “beetle,” because this is a burrowing cockroach in Corydiidae.
Keep it separate from E. pilosa. Adult size, male wing markings and breeding speed differ, while buried nymphs are easy to transfer accidentally with substrate.
📌 Description
Adults are usually 2.5-3.5 cm. Females are rounded, dark and largely subterranean; males are slimmer and fully winged, commonly with a cream band or spots across the wings. Adults can climb, and males may flutter. Nymphs spend almost their entire development below the leaf layer.
The colony is most interesting at night and during feeding. It breeds too slowly to be an efficient feeder species and needs a mature substrate more than a stack of egg cartons.
🌍 Distribution
The original description associates the species with Myanmar, while current GBIF records support Thailand and museum material also records Malaysia. The map shows those defensible Southeast Asian countries; occurrence density should not be mistaken for a complete range survey.

⚖️ Legal status
No listing for E. capucina appears in the official CITES, EU wildlife-trade or Bern appendices checked on 2026-08-22. Local live-insect, import, plant-health and transport controls can still apply. Keep invoices and the breeder’s identification, check rules before crossing a border and never release cockroaches, oothecae or used substrate outdoors.
🤌 Husbandry
House a starter culture in at least 30 x 20 x 20 cm, prioritizing substrate area and depth. Quarantine arrivals for 60 days in a separately serviced box and inspect substrate for foreign nymphs or oothecae before combining stock. Use cups during transfers; adults are small, fast and capable climbers.

💡 Lighting
UVB is unnecessary. Use 11-13 hours of diffuse light and avoid heating the soil with bright lamps. A dim red observation light may reveal activity, but the colony must retain a dark period.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain 22-28°C, with 24-27°C supporting dependable development. Provide a 20-23°C retreat and allow 19-23°C nights. Warm one side or the upper air under thermostat control; bottom heat can dry the depth where females, nymphs and oothecae retreat. Development slows sharply in prolonged cool conditions.
💧 Humidity and water
Build a vertical gradient: the lower two-thirds stay evenly moist while the top substrate and most leaves remain drier. This usually gives 55-75% relative humidity without mold. Add water down one corner rather than misting every surface. Fresh produce supplies much moisture, but a tiny pebble-filled dish or gel provides backup.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Provide at least 8 cm of pesticide-free soil, coconut fibre or peat-like substrate mixed with crumbled rotten hardwood, topped by 3-5 cm of hardwood leaves. Avoid sand and compact waterlogged mixes. A few twigs give males night perches. Secure a fine-mesh lid and barrier because adults climb; keep heavy objects off the burrowing layer.
🪳 Feeding
Decayed hardwood leaves are a continuous food and must not be decorative only. Offer a protein-rich staple such as fish, chick or quality dog food twice weekly, with carrot, squash, apple or mushroom in small portions. Some colonies show little interest in produce. Remove mold-prone food after 24 hours and never use leaves or vegetables exposed to pesticides.
🥚 Breeding
Females deposit oothecae directly into the substrate. Culture reports describe roughly one ootheca per week in warm productive females, about 15-20 eggs, 90-120 days to hatch at 24-27°C, and 6-8 months for nymphs to mature. These are breeder observations rather than controlled life-history data. Do not dig for egg cases or move them to a separate incubator; stable moisture at depth is safer. Adult females often outlive the shorter-lived males, so maintain overlapping generations.
🩺 Common problems
- No hatchlings: check lower-layer moisture, warmth and time; repeated digging damages hidden oothecae.
- Slow growth: provide regular protein and 24-27°C rather than overheating the substrate.
- Surface mold or gnats: reduce fresh food, let the top layer dry and improve ventilation.
- Failed molts: correct compacted or dry lower substrate and preserve leaf cover.
- Escapes: renew the barrier and open the box only inside a catch tub.
- Allergy: damp-clean frass and use gloves and suitable respiratory protection during substrate changes.
📌 Conclusion
E. capucina suits a keeper interested in a patient, substrate-centred culture. Build the deep moisture gradient before the colony arrives and leave deposited oothecae undisturbed; shallow wet boxes are the common route to failure.
