🔤 Taxonomy
Elliptorhina javanica (Hanitsch, 1930) is the accepted name in GBIF and the Cockroach Species File. It was originally described as Gromphadorhina javanica. The epithet does not indicate Java: verified occurrence records and photographed material place this wingless hisser in Madagascar.
Halloween hisser, Halloween hissing cockroach and Javan beauty are trade names. Colour alone is unreliable in mixed hobby colonies, so keep breeder and line records and never combine it with other Elliptorhina, Gromphadorhina or Princisia.
📌 Description
Adults are compact, wingless hissers, usually 4-5.5 cm long, with dark brown to black bodies and orange-red markings along the abdomen. Males have more pronounced pronotal humps and thicker, hairier antennae; females are broader. Both sexes climb clean glass and newborn nymphs pass through very small gaps.
This is an active nocturnal display colony rather than a handling insect. It can reproduce well when kept warm, but becomes erratic in cool, wet or crowded tubs.
🌍 Distribution
The species is endemic to Madagascar. Cockroach Species File material includes a male from spiny forest at Berenty in the island’s south, but available records do not justify drawing a narrow range polygon. The country-level map avoids implying that every part of Madagascar is occupied.

⚖️ Legal status
The official CITES Appendices, EU wildlife-trade Annexes A-D and Bern Convention appendices checked on 2026-08-22 contain no listing for E. javanica. This does not cancel national rules for importing, transporting, breeding or selling live insects, particularly animals claimed to descend from Madagascar exports. Buy established captive-bred stock and retain the invoice, breeder details and line history; never release animals or enclosure waste outdoors.
🤌 Husbandry
For a starter group use at least 30 x 25 x 25 cm, increasing floor and retreat area before the colony becomes crowded. Quarantine additions for 60 days with separate tools, recording deaths, molts and births. Work inside a large catch tub and move animals with cups rather than pulling their gripping feet from skin.

💡 Lighting
UVB is not required. Provide 11-13 hours of diffuse room or LED light, while bark shelters remain dark throughout the day. Plants are optional; trim them before leaves create a route to vents or the lid.

Hold most of the enclosure at 24-29°C with a 21-24°C retreat; 20-24°C nights are safe. Consistent warmth around 26-28°C supports growth and reproduction. Use a thermostatted heater on one side, never beneath the whole substrate, and measure at the animals’ level. Sustained heat above 30°C dries retreats and shortens the safety margin.
💧 Humidity and water
Keep roughly one-third of the substrate moist while the surface elsewhere dries between watering. Aim for 55-75% relative humidity with strong cross-ventilation, raising local moisture during molts rather than soaking the whole enclosure. Offer a shallow pebble-filled dish or water gel, and remove standing water inaccessible to tiny nymphs.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Use 4 cm of pesticide-free soil, decayed hardwood and crushed leaf litter. Arrange cork vertically and horizontally to provide narrow crevices and safe molting surfaces. Fit a gasketed lid, cover vents with fine mesh, and maintain a 5-8 cm band of insect escape barrier below the rim. Cardboard is usable in dry quarantine housing but deteriorates rapidly in humid displays.
🪳 Feeding
Leaf litter and soft rotten hardwood should remain available. Two or three times weekly offer a rotation of carrot, squash, apple, leafy greens and mushroom; add a small amount of fish, chick or dog food weekly. Remove fresh leftovers within 24 hours. Protein supports breeding, but excess dry feed, fruit and crowding produce mites and flies rather than a healthier colony.
🥚 Breeding
Females retain the ootheca internally and give birth to live nymphs; cockroach literature often calls this ovoviviparity, while site metadata uses viviparous. Under steady warm conditions a litter commonly falls in the 20-30 range, but published species-specific life-history data are limited. Do not isolate gravid females unless aggression demands it. Preserve a balanced sex ratio, numerous crevices and a population ceiling; remove surplus before density causes stunting.
