Death's-head Cockroach
🔤 Taxonomy
Blaberus craniifer Burmeister, 1838 is the accepted name. Older combinations include Blabera craniifera, and GBIF records Blaberus craniipes as a synonym. “Death’s-head cockroach” is also applied loosely to similar Blaberus stock, especially B. discoidalis. The pronotal skull mark alone cannot verify a colony; male genitalia and reliable origin are important because mixed or hybrid hobby lines occur.
📌 Description
Adults are broad, fully winged cockroaches about 5.5-8 cm long, with dark brown wings and a pale pronotum marked like a face. They can flutter and glide but are not sustained fliers. Nymphs are dark, flattened, and powerful burrowers. Adults do not usually scale clean glass, but rough silicone, bark, and lid seams provide routes.
This is a robust first display-roach species when containment and allergen control are taken seriously. It is gregarious and breeds readily in warmth, but a neglected dense colony quickly develops odor, mites, chewed wings, and high airborne frass.
🌍 Distribution
Taxonomic reviews document B. craniifer from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, and Ecuador. Records from Florida, Cuba, Belize, and Hispaniola are reported in other catalogues, but native versus introduced status and confusion with similar Blaberus require caution. The map uses the conservative mainland range supported by the reviewed literature.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-08-22: B. craniifer was not found in the current CITES Appendices or EU wildlife-trade Annexes A-D. The Bern Convention is not relevant to this American species. National live-insect import, pest, animal-feed, tenancy, and transport rules may still restrict it.
Keep purchase and lineage records and describe shipments accurately. Never release surplus animals. Treat culture waste so no nymph or internally retained ootheca can survive disposal.
🤌 Husbandry
A 45 × 30 × 30 cm enclosure suits a small colony; larger breeding groups need more floor area and bark surface. Use strong cross-ventilation and positive lid latches. Keep a smooth perimeter above decorations and service inside a catch tub.

Quarantine additions for 60-90 days. Photograph adults, confirm the culture name, and watch for mites, nematodes, abnormal feces, or deaths. Do not combine Blaberus species or trade lines: hybrids and persistent misidentifications destroy their biological value.
💡 Lighting
UVB is not required. Use diffuse light for 10-12 hours and provide deep shade under bark. Bright light keeps animals buried. Mount lamps outside the enclosure and protect the colony from direct sun.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain 24-29 °C with a limited 29-31 °C warm side and a 21-24 °C cool retreat. Nights may fall to 20-24 °C. Published experimental cultures were raised around 27 °C, while classic life-history work recorded slow nymphal development at 25-26 °C.
Heat one side externally and use a thermostat. Do not heat below the whole burrowing layer. Slow breeding should prompt checks of colony age, sex ratio, food, and moisture before temperatures are raised.
💧 Humidity and water
Keep the lower substrate lightly moist and the surface partly dry, producing roughly 55-75% humidity with a 70-80% molting refuge. Adults tolerate short dry periods better than small nymphs. Stagnant saturation is more dangerous than an ordinary nightly fall in humidity.
Provide a shallow, textured water dish or safe gel and clean it often. Fresh vegetables also supply water. Increase ventilation and reduce portions if condensation, sour odor, mites, or phorid flies appear.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Use 8-12 cm of topsoil/coir mixed with crushed deciduous leaf litter and rotten hardwood. Nymphs should be able to bury completely. Add stacked cork flats and vertical bark for adults; secure them against collapse and leave room for full wing expansion at the final molt.
Avoid aromatic wood, fertilizer, perlite, insecticidal decor, and egg cartons in a wet naturalistic setup. Cardboard is acceptable in a dry quarantine box but molds quickly in the permanent enclosure.
🪳 Feeding
Keep a balanced dry roach food, cereal-legume mix, or modest-protein fish food available. Offer squash, carrot, sweet potato, leafy greens, apple, pear, or banana two or three times weekly. Leaf litter and decayed hardwood add fiber and foraging material.
Feed on dishes and remove fresh food within 24-48 hours. Reproductive colonies need protein, but heavy use of dog or cat food fouls the substrate and encourages mites. A varied plant-heavy diet is safer than unlimited fruit or protein.
🥚 Breeding
Females retract the ootheca into a brood pouch and give birth to live nymphs. Literature calls the mode ovoviviparous; structured metadata uses “viviparous.” Classic work found 73-96 days between mating and birth, about 37 eggs per ootheca and an average of 29 live young, with one mating capable of fertilizing several oothecae.
At 25-26 °C, males required roughly 186-236 days and females 223-273 days to mature in one study. Sex mature nymphs by terminal plates; adult males have visible styli and a slimmer abdomen. Provide numerous hides and food stations because occasional cannibalism increases with crowding or shortage.
🩺 Common problems
- Chewed wings or missing limbs: increase space, hides, food stations, and protein while reducing density.
- Failed molts: correct moisture at depth and provide stable textured vertical surfaces.
- Reproductive failure: check sustained warmth, mature sex ratio, crowding, and chronic disturbance.
- Mites and flies: remove spoiled food, improve airflow, and replace heavily fouled substrate.
- Allergy: cockroach frass is a significant allergen. Damp-clean, ventilate, wear gloves and suitable respiratory protection, and keep colonies away from sleeping areas.
📌 Conclusion
An accurately labeled B. craniifer colony is a large, active display that can thrive for years. Prepare deep burrowing substrate, ample bark, thermostatted warmth, and a cleaning routine before purchase. The major long-term failure is allowing an easy-breeding colony to become crowded, dirty, and taxonomically mixed.
