Androctonus australis is the accepted name of the Saharan fat-tailed scorpion. Subspecies names and very broad ranges appear in older literature, and “fat-tail” is a generic trade label used for several Androctonus species. The thick metasoma is not enough to determine species; locality, lineage, adult morphology, and source documents must agree.

This robust yellow to brown desert buthid commonly reaches 8-11 cm. The genus name refers to its powerful tail, and the species is quick, defensive, and medically important. North African clinical literature associates A. australis with severe and potentially fatal envenomation.
This article is not a recommendation for private ownership. The animal is appropriate only for lawful expert or professional display behind redundant locked barriers. Older claims extending the species deep into Asia or India should not be used for its modern mapped range.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-08-17: A. australis is not listed in CITES or the EU wildlife-trade annexes, and the Bern Convention is not relevant to this North African species. Absence from those instruments is not permission to keep it.

House one adult alone in a bolted or mechanically latched 30 × 30 × 25 cm primary enclosure. Place it within a second locked, escape-resistant cabinet or dedicated room. Fine metal vents, captive fasteners, sealed service ports, tamper-evident clips, warning labels, controlled keys, and a signed enclosure count are minimum controls.

Quarantine for at least 90 days in a separate locked unit with dedicated tools. Confirm identity, sex, health, and count. Open an imported shipment only in the prepared secondary room; wild-collected animals may be dehydrated, injured, parasitized, gravid, or taxonomically wrong.
For every transfer, close and sign the room, seal the door gap, clear the floor, place the enclosure in a large smooth-sided tub, and prepare two rigid lidded catch cups. One trained person uses long forceps and a soft guide while a second watches the animal and barriers. Never pin, grab, or tail-hold it, and never work alone. Recount and secure everything before the room opens.
Post the scientific name, animal count, site address, poison-centre and emergency contacts, access instructions, and responsible person outside the locked area. Rehearse sting and escape actions. A missing scorpion means immediate room isolation and activation of the documented search plan, not an unprotected hand search.
💡 Lighting
UVB is not required. Use diffuse light for a 10-12-hour day and complete darkness at night. All fixtures and cables remain outside both containment layers. Avoid direct sunlight and strong lamps; a small desert enclosure can still overheat rapidly.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Provide 26-31 °C daytime air, a limited 31-34 °C warm area, and a 22-25 °C cool refuge. Nights may fall to 18-23 °C. These are captive gradients, not an attempt to reproduce exposed Saharan surface extremes.
Use fixed digital probes and an external side heater on a reliable thermostat. Never heat beneath a burrowing animal. Check heat accumulation inside the locked cabinet and fit an independent high-temperature alarm in professional installations.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain 25-40% RH with strong ventilation. Keep most substrate dry, but provide a small deep corner at roughly 40-55% during premoult and for small juveniles. Do not mist the entire enclosure or create condensation.
Supply a shallow stable water dish and refill it through a protected port with a long pipette where the design allows. Persistent wetness, mould, or flies indicates excessive water or inadequate airflow.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Provide at least 10 cm of packed sand and clay with some pesticide-free soil, firm enough to hold a shallow scrape. Add flat stones and cork shelters seated on the enclosure base. Keep the design simple, stable, and fully inspectable; invisible hollow chambers prevent a reliable count.
Vents and seams must be smaller than the rigid body width. Test the empty enclosure and every lock before use. All maintenance takes place inside the secondary smooth-sided tub, with catch cups already ready.
🪳 Feeding
Offer one appropriately sized captive-bred cricket, roach, or locust every 10-14 days. Feed through the smallest controlled opening with long tools. Adjust to abdomen condition, temperature, and premoult; refusal is common before a moult.
Remove leftovers within 24 hours and immediately around moulting or maternal animals. Whole invertebrate prey requires no routine dusting. Avoid wild prey, pesticides, and unsecured feeder cultures in the locked room.
🦂 Breeding and young
A. australis is viviparous. It gives birth to live young, which ride on the female through their first moult; there are no eggs to incubate. A litter can create dozens of very small, medically important escape risks.
Breeding belongs only in permitted professional programmes with a defined purpose, documentation, and enough individually numbered double-contained juvenile units. Observe a pairing continuously and separate adults promptly. Do not add loose prey while young remain on the female. Record every birth, death, transfer, and count.

- Escape or miscount: broad vents, worn seams, open feeding, and uninspectable decor are critical failures.
- Sting exposure: direct access, solo transfers, improvised containers, and absent emergency practice are unacceptable.
- Overheating: uncontrolled heaters, sun, and a poorly ventilated cabinet can create lethal temperatures.
- Moulting difficulty: a completely dry refuge, live prey, or a persistently wet enclosure can contribute.
- Wrong identity: “fat-tail” labels and obsolete wide-range records do not establish A. australis.
After a sting, withdraw, prevent further exposure, and call emergency services or a poison centre immediately. Follow their specific directions, do not drive yourself, and do not delay for home remedies. Provide the scientific name and provenance; do not attempt a risky recapture during the medical response.
