Large Fruit Flies
🔤 Taxonomy
Drosophila hydei is the accepted scientific name. Feeder suppliers usually sell genetically flightless strains; that label describes the culture strain, not the wild species.
Common trade names include:
- Large fruit fly
- Flightless hydei
- Hydei fruit fly
Do not confuse these flies with Drosophila melanogaster. D. hydei adults are larger and useful for predators that have outgrown the smallest fruit flies, but their culture develops more slowly.
📌 Description
Adult D. hydei are roughly 3 mm long. They suit small dart frogs, juvenile geckos, mantis nymphs, spiderlings, small fish, and other predators that need prey between D. melanogaster and pinhead crickets in size.
A healthy cup is a culture system, not a long-term storage jar. Larvae feed in moist yeast-rich medium, pupae climb onto drier surfaces, and adults need ventilation and climbing material. At ordinary culture temperatures, a new cup often takes about three to four weeks to produce strongly, so several dated cultures should overlap.
Fruit flies should be part of a varied diet. Their small gut volume limits gut-loading, and frequent users should dust them immediately before feeding according to the predator’s calcium and vitamin plan.
🌍 Distribution
Drosophila hydei is now cosmopolitan and is associated with fermenting fruit and other decaying plant material. Captive feeder strains are traded far beyond any original native range.
This broad distribution is a biosecurity warning, not a reason to release them. Escaped flies can contaminate food, establish around organic waste, or mix with wild flying drosophilids.

⚖️ Regulations and safety
Checked on 2026-08-20: Drosophila hydei is not listed in the CITES Appendices, and no species-specific listing was found in the EU wildlife-trade annexes. It is not treated here as a species on the EU list of invasive alien species. The Bern Convention is not relevant to a protected European native-species question for this feeder.
Live-insect import, transport, sale, classroom use, and disposal can still be regulated. USDA APHIS states that all shipments of Drosophila into the United States from foreign sources require prior PPQ 526 authorization; interstate exemptions are not identical for every species or destination.
Keep the scientific name and strain on purchase records. Prevent escape, do not mix a culture with wild flies, and never release live adults, larvae, pupae, or used medium. Freeze an unwanted sealed culture before disposal if local waste rules permit.
🤌 Husbandry
Use smooth 500-750 ml culture cups with fabric or very fine mesh lids. Ventilation must pass moisture and fermentation gases without admitting wild flies or phorid flies. Place cups in a clean, pesticide-free area away from kitchens, direct sun, and other cultures showing mites.
A practical rotation is to start a fresh cup every 7-10 days. Keep at least two age groups so one failed culture does not interrupt feeding. Write the start date, strain, and source on every lid.
New stock should begin in a separate area. Watch its emergence time, odor, mite load, and whether supposed flightless adults actually stay flightless before placing it beside established cultures.
💡 Lighting
UVB is unnecessary. Provide an ordinary 10-12 hour room-light cycle and shade the cups from sunlight. Clear plastic can become lethal within minutes on a sunny windowsill.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Useful culture ranges are:
- routine culture: 22-25°C
- slower holding: 18-21°C
- egg hatch: commonly about 2-3 days at 22-25°C
- first strong adult production: commonly about 21-28 days, depending on strain and medium
Avoid sustained temperatures above 27-28°C. Heat accelerates drying, fermentation, mites, and crowding; some flightless strains also perform unpredictably when reared too warm. Do not place cups directly on heat mats. If supplemental heat is necessary, warm the room or a ventilated cabinet with a thermostat and measure the air among the cups.
💧 Humidity and water
The medium supplies water. It should remain moist enough for larvae but never become a liquid pool. Condensation covering the cup, drowned adults, or a sharp rotten odor indicates excessive moisture, crowding, poor ventilation, or failing medium.
Do not add an open water dish. Adjust the tested medium recipe, cup ventilation, and room humidity instead. In a very dry room, use purpose-made lids and a proven culture mix rather than sealing the cup.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Add excelsior, folded coffee filter, or plastic mesh that gives adults and emerging flies dry standing area. The material must not be pesticide-treated or packed so tightly that it traps wet medium.
Place cultures in secondary trays. A clean isolation tray or approved mite barrier can slow mites moving between cups, but it cannot rescue an infested culture. Never spray insecticide, acaricide, fragrance, or household cleaner near feeders.
🪳 Feeding
Use a proven commercial fruit-fly medium or a tested potato, grain, sugar, and yeast formula. The balance matters: yeast supports larval growth, carbohydrate fuels the culture, and preservatives or acidity help control mold when used at the correct concentration.
For feeding predators:
- tap flies into a tall clean cup before dusting
- apply only a light, even coat of the supplement appropriate for the predator
- offer them immediately, before the dust is groomed off
- remove excessive uneaten flies when they stress the animal or foul its enclosure
Do not use visibly moldy, foul-smelling, heavily mite-infested, or pesticide-exposed cultures. Fruit flies alone are not a complete diet for most insectivores.
🥚 Breeding
Seed fresh medium with roughly 40-80 vigorous adults from a clean producing cup; the exact number depends on cup size and strain. Too few founders delay production, while too many adults overload the medium before their offspring mature.
Adults lay in the medium, larvae feed near the surface, and mature larvae climb to pupate. D. hydei is slower than D. melanogaster, so do not discard a clean cup simply because it has not produced after two weeks. Replace productive cultures before they become wet, exhausted, or mite-heavy rather than repeatedly topping up old medium.
🩺 Common problems
- No production: the cup may be too cool, too young, too dry, or seeded with weak or single-sex-biased early emergers.
- Mites: isolate the cup immediately and start clean cultures from uncontaminated stock; heavy infestations justify disposal.
- Mold: review moisture, recipe, hygiene, starter density, and ventilation. Do not feed from extensively moldy cups.
- Flying adults: the strain may be mislabeled, contaminated by wild flies, or expressing temperature-sensitive flight ability. Secure it before investigating.
- Early crash: overheating, exhausted medium, poor airflow, chemical fumes, or too many founders are common causes.
- Predator deficiency: vary feeders and follow the predator-specific supplement schedule; more flies do not correct an unbalanced diet.
📌 Conclusion
Choose D. hydei when D. melanogaster is too small but larger prey is still unsuitable. Its main management cost is time: stagger clean cultures several weeks ahead, because a single cup cannot provide both reliable production and emergency backup.
