Calliphora vomitoria is a blowfly commonly sold as blue bottle fly pupae or spikes. The older combination Musca vomitoria appears in taxonomy references.
📌 Description
Blue bottle flies are active flying feeders for small arboreal lizards, chameleons, day geckos, mantids, jumping spiders, and frogs that respond strongly to airborne prey. Most keepers buy clean pupae and hatch adults rather than culture larvae at home.
Wild maggots from carrion, bins, fishing bait, or livestock areas are not acceptable pet feeders because pathogen and chemical exposure are unknown.
🌍 Distribution
GBIF treats the species as accepted and records it as introduced in some regions. It is widespread in cool and temperate areas and can become a household pest if adults escape.
⚖️ Regulations and safety
Calliphora vomitoria was checked on 2026-09-02 against the CITES Appendices and was not found as a CITES-listed species. No specific EU wildlife-trade Annex listing, EU Union-list invasive alien species listing, or Bern Convention listing was found.
Local rules can still restrict live insect import, transport, school or workplace use, release, and waste handling. Do not release adults or larvae. Freeze unwanted pupae or flies before disposal where local rules allow.
🤌 Husbandry
The practical feeder method is to hold purchased pupae in a ventilated escape-proof cup, chill them to delay emergence, and warm only the amount needed. Use fine mesh, tight lids, and a feeding cup that can be opened inside the animal enclosure.
Adult flies need space and air. If holding them for more than a short period, provide a screened container, water wick, and small sugar or honey source.
💡 Lighting
Adults are more active in bright light and a normal day-night cycle. Avoid direct sun on small cups because pupae and flies overheat quickly.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Warm pupae at about 24-27°C for reliable emergence. Cooler storage around refrigerator temperature can delay emergence, but do not freeze pupae meant for feeding. Development speed depends strongly on temperature.
💧 Humidity and water
Pupae need ventilation and should not sit in wet substrate. Adults dehydrate quickly; use a covered water wick or damp cotton so they can drink without drowning or fouling the container.
🌿 Container and escape control
Use smooth cups, fine mesh, and work inside a larger bin or the target enclosure. Escaped adult flies are noisy, stress household members, and can contaminate food surfaces. Larvae can crawl away to pupate, so home breeding needs a sealed system.
🪳 Feeding and gut-loading
Adult flies can be offered a small amount of sugar, honey, or fruit puree before feeding. This is enrichment and short-term loading, not a complete mineral correction. Dust chilled adults lightly if the reptile’s diet plan requires calcium or vitamins.
Use blue bottles as part of a rotation with better-controlled feeders such as roaches, crickets, soldier fly larvae, or fruit flies. They are useful for movement and hunting response.
🥚 Breeding
Breeding requires adult cages, egg-laying media, larval food, pupation medium, and strict odor and sanitation control. Because blowfly larvae naturally develop in decomposing animal material, home cultures can become unhygienic quickly.
For most reptile keepers, bought pupae are safer and more predictable than raising larvae.
