🔤 Taxonomy
Tylototriton shanjing is the accepted name for this member of the Tylototriton verrucosus species group. Older literature and trade lists may call it Tylototriton verrucosus shanjing or may confuse it with T. verrucosus. That distinction matters: old husbandry reports, animals sold without locality data, and visually similar captive lines do not always represent the same taxon.

📌 Description
This is a robust, mostly terrestrial crocodile newt from the mountains of Yunnan. Adults are usually 13-17 cm long. A sensible long-term commitment is 10-20 years, although species-specific longevity records remain limited. The dark, granular body contrasts with orange or yellow-orange cranial ridges, vertebral ridge, rib nodules, limbs, vent, and tail.
The care challenge is seasonal balance. Adults spend most of the year on land but use shallow still water during the wet-season breeding phase. They need cool, well-ventilated housing with moist retreats and drier surface areas—not a tropical swamp and not a permanently aquatic aquarium.
The bright pattern warns predators of defensive skin secretions. This species is poisonous rather than venomous: it does not inject venom, but its skin secretion must not reach the mouth, eyes, broken skin, food, or other animals. Keep it as a display species. If movement is unavoidable, use a clean container or rinsed, powder-free nitrile gloves and wash hands after enclosure work.

🌍 Distribution
The confirmed native range is in western, central, and southern Yunnan, China, principally in montane landscapes around 1,000-2,500 m. Reports outside China and some old records attributed to T. shanjing require caution because the T. verrucosus group has undergone repeated taxonomic revision.
The species uses cool hill forest and secondary forest near ponds, ditches, rice-field margins, and other slow or still water. A cool, relatively dry winter and a warmer, wetter season shape its annual activity. The country-scale map below shows China because the map system highlights political units; it does not imply that the species occurs throughout the country.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 18 August 2026: all Tylototriton species are listed in CITES Appendix II, and Tylototriton spp. are included in EU Wildlife Trade Annex B. International trade therefore requires the applicable CITES permits, and entry into the EU normally requires the relevant export and EU import documents. Within the EU, retain evidence of lawful acquisition and any CITES paperwork transferred with the animal.
The species is not covered by the Bern Convention because it is not a European native. It is a Class II nationally protected wild animal in China, so an offered animal’s wild origin must never be assumed lawful. Buy only correctly identified, captive-bred animals from a traceable breeder. Keep the invoice, breeder details, date of transfer, photographs, parent or hatch records when available, and every import or re-export document.
Commercial movements and imports of salamanders may also be subject to animal-health controls intended to limit Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal). Non-commercial pet movements and national ownership rules can differ, so check with the competent CITES and veterinary authorities before purchase or transport. Never release captive amphibians or their water, substrate, plants, or equipment into the environment.
🤌 Husbandry
Prepare the enclosure and verify its daily temperature swing before acquiring the animal. T. shanjing suits an experienced amphibian keeper who can provide a cool room or active cooling, maintain distinct moisture zones, manage a seasonal water area, and quarantine new salamanders without sharing equipment.
House one animal alone during quarantine. Established compatible adults can live as a pair or small group when each has several hides and feeding can be checked individually. Separate any animal that loses weight, monopolizes shelter, develops wounds, or repeatedly displaces another. Never mix species or combine unverified locality lines for breeding.
Quarantine for at least 60-90 days in a simple escape-proof setup in a separate room when possible. Use dedicated gloves, tongs, bowls, siphons, and cleaning equipment. Record weekly weight, appetite, feces, skin condition, and time spent in water. Ask an amphibian-experienced veterinarian about fecal testing and Bd, Bsal, and ranavirus testing based on origin and collection risk.
Do not handle the newt for routine viewing. Amphibian skin is easily damaged by dry hands, soap, sanitizer, lotion, insect repellent, nicotine, and household residues. The animal’s own skin secretion is also a reason to keep hands away from the face and to prevent access by children and pets.
🧪 Filtration and water
Outside breeding preparation, provide a shallow basin or integrated pool with a depth around 5-8 cm and several ramps, bark edges, or stones that allow an effortless exit. Most adults do not need deep water year-round, and a weak or newly metamorphosed animal can drown in a steep-sided pool.
Use dechlorinated water. If the pool is too small to hold a stable biological filter, replace part or all of it frequently and remove soil, feces, and prey at once. A larger breeding pool should be cycled and gently aerated or filtered without strong current. Test ammonia and nitrite and keep both at 0 mg/l; control nitrate with partial water changes. Never clean amphibian equipment with soap.
During deliberate breeding preparation, increase water area and rainfall gradually rather than moving an unwilling animal into deep water. Provide shallow shelves, emergent moss, aquatic plants, and secure land that remains available throughout courtship.
💡 Lighting
Use a clear day-night rhythm: about 10 hours of light in winter, increasing gradually to 13-14 hours in summer. Plant lighting should be moderate and must not heat the enclosure.
Strong UVB is inappropriate. A low-output UVB source over part of the land area can be used as optional low-level provision, approximately Ferguson Zone 1, but dense shade and fully covered retreats must remain available. Measure rather than guess, and replace the lamp according to its tested output. If UVB raises the enclosure temperature or dries the surface, temperature control takes priority.
🌡 Heating and temperature
For routine care, keep most of the enclosure at 16-22 °C with at least one retreat at 14-18 °C. Night cooling to roughly 12-18 °C is useful. Sustained temperatures above 24-25 °C are a warning, especially when air is stagnant; heat stress can progress quickly in amphibians. A heater is rarely needed. In warm homes, use an air-conditioned room, insulated cool cabinet, or purpose-built cooling rather than frozen bottles placed against the animal.
A winter period of about 10-15 °C can be used for healthy, well-established adults when breeding is intended. Make the change gradually and keep the setup somewhat drier while preserving a moist hide and clean water. Do not cool juveniles, underweight or sick animals, recent imports, or animals whose identity and locality are uncertain. Continue monitoring weight and condition even when feeding slows.
Warmer wet-season conditions around 20-23 °C can stimulate activity and reproduction. Published breeding experience includes warmer short periods, but that is not a reason to keep the enclosure at 25-28 °C continuously. Give the newts a cool refuge at all times.
💧 Humidity and water
Aim for a moisture gradient, not one humidity number. The lower substrate and at least one hide should remain moist, while the upper leaf litter can dry slightly between mistings. Ambient relative humidity often falls around 65-85%, but substrate feel, ventilation, skin condition, and animal behavior are more useful than an inexpensive dial hygrometer.
Increase misting and water availability gradually in spring or at the start of a planned breeding cycle. Constantly saturated soil, condensation on every surface, sour odor, and mold indicate too much water or too little ventilation. Bone-dry substrate, a tight curled posture, dull skin, or persistent soaking can indicate inadequate moisture or excessive heat.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
For one adult, use at least 75 × 45 × 45 cm; a compatible pair should have at least 90 × 45 × 45 cm. Floor area and accessible hides matter more than height. Use a tight, ventilated lid and close cable gaps: these slow-looking newts climb surprisingly well and can dehydrate after an escape.
Build an 8-12 cm substrate layer from fertilizer-free topsoil mixed with leaf mould and a little washed sand or fine bark, then cover it with pesticide-free hardwood leaves. The mix should hold a burrow without becoming mud. Cork flats, curved bark, planted cover, and stable stones should create multiple dark retreats in both moist and relatively dry zones. Support heavy decor from the enclosure floor so digging cannot cause collapse.
Avoid cedar and pine chips, fertilizer, perlite, sharp gravel, calcium sand, sphagnum strands that may be swallowed with prey, and soil collected where amphibians, pesticides, road salt, or fertilizers may be present. Paper towel and simple hides are safer during quarantine, but replace soiled paper immediately.
For juveniles just after metamorphosis, use a smaller ventilated tub with shallow substrate, leaf litter, very low water, and abundant tiny hides. The major risks are drowning, chronic wetness, missed feeding, and skin disease. Upgrade gradually as feeding becomes reliable.
🪱 Feeding
Earthworms and chopped nightcrawlers are the best staple for most adults. Add appropriately sized roaches, crickets, woodlice from clean cultures, black soldier fly larvae, small slugs from controlled cultures, and occasional waxworms. Do not use wild prey from land exposed to pesticides or parasites, and do not make fatty waxworms or hard mealworms the main diet.
Offer adults two or three measured meals per week; juveniles need smaller food daily or every other day at first. Prey should be no wider than the newt’s head. Feed at dusk on a smooth dish, leaf, or with blunt tongs so prey is not coated in substrate. Remove uneaten insects before they bite the animal or foul the enclosure.
Gut-load insect feeders for 24-48 hours. When earthworms form most of a varied diet, they normally do not need dusting. If the diet relies heavily on crickets or roaches, use an amphibian-safe calcium supplement lightly and a multivitamin containing an appropriate source of vitamin A according to the product label and veterinary advice. Coordinate any vitamin D3 use with actual UVB provision; more powder is not safer.
🥚 Breeding
Breeding is advanced work, not a routine reason to cycle every pet. Adults should be mature, unrelated where possible, correctly identified, fully documented, and in strong condition. A cool, somewhat drier winter followed by a gradual rise in temperature, misting, day length, and shallow water can trigger courtship in late spring and summer.
Males usually develop a more swollen cloaca during the breeding period; females are often heavier-bodied, but external sexing is not perfectly reliable. Courtship may occur on land or in water. Females deposit eggs singly or in groups on plants, moss, stones, or damp land near water. Published records vary widely, commonly around 30-240 eggs, with larger counts reported.
Incubation varies with temperature. A conservative working range is 18-22 °C and roughly 15-40 days. Eggs placed on land must remain humid without sitting in stagnant water; aquatic eggs need clean, gently aerated water. Rear larvae separately from adults in shallow, clean water, sort by size, protect filter intakes, and provide abundant daphnia or other appropriately small live foods once the yolk is absorbed.
Metamorphosis usually follows after roughly two to four months, depending on temperature and food, at about 4-6 cm total length. Newly terrestrial juveniles require meticulous feeding and a substrate that is moist below but not waterlogged. Plan rearing space, legal transfer records, and permanent homes before breeding.
🩺 Common problems
- Heat stress: restlessness, persistent soaking, escape attempts, weakness, poor righting response, or sudden appetite loss. Check temperatures immediately and cool the room gradually.
- Skin disease and Bsal/Bd concern: excessive shedding, small erosions or ulcers, red or shiny patches, abnormal posture, or several animals becoming ill. Isolate the animal, stop equipment sharing, and seek prompt veterinary testing.
- Stale wet setup: odor, mold, reddened feet or belly, skin sores, and refusal to use hides. Improve ventilation and replace contaminated substrate; do not dry a sick animal abruptly.
- Dehydration: dull or tacky skin, tight posture, weakness, or prolonged soaking. Verify the cool moist retreat and water quality as well as ambient heat.
- Nutritional imbalance or impaction: weight loss, poor growth, weakness, or failure to pass feces. Review prey variety, supplement use, prey size, hydration, and substrate ingestion.
- Aquatic problems: repeated surfacing, abnormal floating, frantic attempts to leave water, or reddened skin. Test ammonia, nitrite, temperature, and contamination before changing anything else.
Do not raise the temperature, add salt, or use fish medication as a general treatment. Many products are unsafe for amphibians, and heat can worsen stress. Persistent appetite loss, weight loss, swelling, wounds, abnormal buoyancy, neurologic signs, or skin lesions need an amphibian-experienced veterinarian.
📌 Conclusion
Tylototriton shanjing is best for a keeper who values seasonal husbandry and observation over handling. Before purchase, have a cool, escape-proof terrestrial enclosure, a safe shallow water plan, separate quarantine equipment, and complete legal-origin documents ready. The most common preventable failure is treating this mountain newt as either a permanently wet tropical salamander or an aquarium species.
