Budgett's Frog
🔤 Taxonomy
Lepidobatrachus laevis is the accepted scientific name of Budgett’s frog, a member of Ceratophryidae. The repeated species epithet “laevis” also appears in Xenopus laevis, but the two frogs are not close husbandry substitutes.

📌 Description
Budgett’s frog is a broad, flattened Chaco predator with eyes and nostrils high on the head, short legs and an exceptionally large mouth. Adults are usually about 9-13 cm, with females larger. An alarmed frog may rise on its legs, open its mouth, scream and bite.
During the wet season it lives and feeds in shallow temporary water. In the dry season wild frogs burrow and form a protective cocoon for aestivation. Routine captive care should focus on warm clean water; artificial aestivation is an expert breeding technique, not an annual requirement for every pet. Plan for at least 5-10 years.

🌍 Distribution
Lepidobatrachus laevis is native to the Gran Chaco of Paraguay, Bolivia and northern Argentina. It is associated with highly seasonal dry and wet Chaco habitats, breeding and feeding in shallow temporary pools that can warm rapidly and disappear.
This does not mean a captive enclosure should be allowed to foul or dry unpredictably. It explains the frog’s shallow-water body shape, rapid larval development and capacity for dry-season aestivation. A pet needs controlled choices and stable water; seasonal cycling belongs only in a planned, monitored breeding programme.

⚖️ Legal status
The CITES Appendices and EU Wildlife Trade Annexes checked on 2026-08-20 do not list Lepidobatrachus laevis. The species is not native to Europe and is not relevant to the Bern Convention.
Not listed is not the same as unregulated. National rules may control import, sale, transport, breeding, exhibition or ownership, and wild amphibian exports may be regulated by countries of origin. Choose a clearly captive-bred animal and retain its invoice and breeder or importer details. Check the rules in both origin and destination jurisdictions before cross-border movement.
🤌 Husbandry
House Budgett’s frogs individually. They are specialised frog-eaters in nature, and cohabitation commonly ends with injury or cannibalism. Even breeding introductions require close expert supervision.
A practical permanent setup gives the frog a large shallow water area and a broad, non-abrasive slope or platform where the body can rest partly or completely out of the water. Establish the filter and verify temperatures before purchase. Remove faeces and food promptly, test water, and make water changes according to measured waste.
Quarantine every arrival for 60-90 days with dedicated equipment. Track weight, appetite, skin condition and faeces. Wild-caught or poorly documented frogs require especially cautious parasite and chytrid assessment by an amphibian-experienced veterinarian.
🧪 Filtration and water
Use dechlorinated, temperature-matched water, generally 7-15 cm deep for an adult depending on body size and the layout. The frog must be able to sit with nostrils clear and reach the surface without struggling. A broad sloping exit prevents exhaustion.
Budgett’s frogs produce heavy waste. Use a mature sponge filter or a guarded filter with diffused flow, but do not assume filtration replaces water changes. Test for 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, keep nitrate low, siphon after feeding and change any visibly fouled water immediately. In simple unfiltered setups, large water changes may be necessary daily.
Avoid untreated tap water, distilled water used alone and abrupt temperature or chemistry changes. Never use soap on the enclosure or decorations.
💡 Lighting
Provide a 10-12 hour light cycle with extensive shade. Bright lamps over open water leave this nocturnal ambush predator exposed, so use cork, broad artificial leaves or other safe cover.
Low-output Ferguson Zone 1 UVB is recommended, aiming around UVI 0.5-1.0 at the most exposed resting point and zero in retreats. UVB must not overheat the shallow water. Measure output when possible and replace lamps according to measured performance, not appearance.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain water and occupied air around 23-27°C by day, with a mild drop to 21-24°C at night. A small 26-28°C zone can be offered only if the frog can leave it. Temperatures in the high 20s combined with fouled, poorly oxygenated water can become dangerous quickly.
Heat the room or use a guarded, thermostatically controlled aquarium heater. An exposed heater can burn a frog, and an unregulated lamp can overheat a shallow volume within minutes. Use at least two thermometers to verify the main water area and warmer zone.
💧 Humidity and water
With a large water area, ambient humidity often settles around 60-80%. Ventilation remains necessary; condensation on every surface and a sour smell indicate poor air exchange. Keep the resting area damp but not coated in waste.
Do not trigger aestivation by accidentally drying the animal. Aestivation involves a controlled dry-season cycle, fasting and cocoon formation and carries risks of dehydration, excessive weight loss and death. It should be attempted only with healthy mature breeding animals, a researched protocol and experienced veterinary support.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Floor space matters more than height. A 75 x 45 cm enclosure lets one adult move between water, shade and a stable haul-out. Use smooth slate or large fixed river stones to form a gentle slope; every stone must be too large to swallow and secured so it cannot shift.
Do not use aquarium gravel, loose pebbles or coarse sand. They can be swallowed during the frog’s violent feeding strike. Keep decoration sparse enough to clean thoroughly, with no narrow crevices, sharp plastic or filter gaps that can trap a limb.
🪱 Feeding
Earthworms are an excellent staple. Rotate gut-loaded roaches, crickets, locusts, silkworms and other suitable invertebrates. Large adults may receive an occasional appropriately sized whole thawed fish or captive-produced whole vertebrate item, but rodents should be rare and plain muscle meat should not be used. Whole prey provides a better calcium-to-phosphorus balance than fillet or meat.
Juveniles need small meals several times weekly. Most adults can be fed every 4-7 days, adjusting by weight and body condition. Use long tongs and keep fingers out of feeding range. Remove remains immediately because they foul warm water.
Dust insect prey with plain calcium regularly and use a balanced amphibian multivitamin at label intervals, generally every 1-2 weeks for growing juveniles and every 2-4 weeks for adults on a varied diet. If effective UVB is absent, use D3 only through a carefully selected product schedule; avoid overlapping supplements.
🥚 Breeding notes
Breeding uses a carefully managed dry cycle followed by heavy feeding and a rain chamber. Females may lay approximately 1,000-1,400 eggs, which can hatch within about 1-3 days under warm conditions. Tadpoles are predatory and cannibalistic from an early stage and must be separated or managed at very low density with rigorous feeding and water-quality control.
Do not place a female with a male simply to “see what happens.” Pairing risks bites and drowning, while artificial aestivation can kill an unfit animal. Secure legal homes and rearing capacity before breeding.
🧍 Handling and safety
Routine handling is inappropriate. Move the frog in a smooth wet container or, when unavoidable, with moistened powder-free gloves. Never lift it by a leg or restrain it around the abdomen.
This species is not venomous, but it can deliver a painful bite. A threatened frog gives clear warnings by inflating, standing tall, gaping and vocalising. Stop the interaction rather than testing the display. Wash hands and equipment after contact, and change gloves between amphibians.
🩺 Common problems
- Water-quality injury: reddening, excess mucus, lethargy or repeated attempts to leave water require immediate ammonia/nitrite testing.
- Bacterial dermatitis / “red leg”: ulcers, red limbs or underside, weakness and loss of appetite require urgent veterinary care.
- Obesity: frequent rodents and oversized meals are common causes; weigh the frog and use lean varied whole prey.
- Impaction: swallowed gravel or large substrate, dehydration and low temperature can lead to anorexia, bloating or absent faeces.
- Burns and overheating: unguarded heaters and shallow water under lamps are frequent setup hazards.
- Aestivation failure: uncontrolled drying, premature cycling or inadequate body reserves can cause severe dehydration and death.
Avoid salt baths, antiseptics and fish medications unless an amphibian veterinarian gives the exact drug and dose.

Budgett’s frog is an advanced display species for a keeper prepared to manage warm shallow water, heavy waste, a powerful feeding response and strictly solitary housing. Build and cycle the enclosure before purchase. Clean water and restrained feeding matter far more to a pet than reproducing the dramatic dry season.
