Anthony's Poison Frog Care Guide
🔤 Taxonomy
Epipedobates anthonyi is the accepted scientific name for Anthony’s poison frog. Older literature and keeper notes may use Phyllobates, Dendrobates, Colostethus, or Ameerega combinations, so invoices and transfer records should use or clearly connect to the current name.

📌 Description
This is a small, active dendrobatid for a humid planted terrarium, not a handling pet. Adults are usually 2-3 cm and are most visible when the enclosure has deep leaf litter, low plants, visual cover, and predictable feeding.
Captive lines are not medically dangerous to handle in the way wild alkaloid-loaded poison frogs can be. Wild poison frogs acquire defensive alkaloids from natural prey; captive-bred frogs maintained on fruit flies, springtails, and other cultured insects do not keep the same toxin profile. They are still display-only animals because amphibian skin is permeable and easily damaged by dry hands, soap, lotion, disinfectant residue, and stress.
Buy documented captive-bred animals. The species is established enough in specialist collections that wild-caught frogs are unnecessary and add legal, disease, and conservation risk.
🌍 Distribution
Epipedobates anthonyi occurs on the Pacific side of southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru. It is associated with leaf litter, stream margins, dry to seasonally humid forest edges, plantations, and other disturbed sites where cover and moisture remain available.
For captive care, the useful lessons are:
- provide humid retreats without turning the vivarium into stagnant mud
- build the floor with drainage, leaf litter, plants, cork, and sight breaks
- keep temperatures moderate; chronic heat is more dangerous than a mild night drop
- maintain tiny live-food cultures before buying the frogs
- seal every cable gap and ventilation edge because adults are small and juveniles are tiny
⚖️ Legal status
As checked on 2026-09-02, Epipedobates anthonyi is listed in CITES Appendix II. Under EU wildlife-trade implementation, Appendix II dendrobatids of this type are handled under EU Annex B unless a stricter national measure applies. Keep invoices, breeder details, transfer records, and import documents where relevant.
No listing was found for this South American species in the Bern Convention appendices. It was also not found on the EU list of invasive alien species of Union concern. That does not make release acceptable: unwanted amphibians must never be released, and local animal-welfare, sale, breeding, transport, and import rules still apply.
🧭 Life stage differences
For adults: Adults use the lower and middle levels of a planted vivarium but need floor structure more than empty height. Males call and can defend calling sites; a pair or carefully watched small group is more reliable than a crowded mixed group.
For juveniles: Froglets do best in smaller, secure grow-out setups where tiny prey is easy to find. They dehydrate quickly, miss food in oversized displays, and escape through gaps that seem harmless for adults.
Watch closely: Weight loss becomes serious fast in a frog this small. Track body shape, feeding response, and activity by observation rather than frequent catching.
🤌 Husbandry
Use a secure planted tropical terrarium with drainage, leaf litter, live plants, cork, and shaded retreats. A mature bioactive setup helps stabilize humidity and microfauna, but it does not replace regular feeding, glass cleaning, and health checks.
Quarantine every newcomer for at least six weeks with separate tools, misting equipment, and feeding cups. Monitor weight, droppings, appetite, skin, and coordination. Ask an amphibian-experienced veterinarian whether fecal screening and Bd or ranavirus testing are appropriate before mixing animals.
Do not mix species. Poison frogs are small, territorial, disease-sensitive, and easily stressed by larger amphibians, reptiles, fish, or incompatible frogs.
🧪 Filtration and water
This is not an aquarium species. Use dechlorinated or reverse-osmosis water for misting and small water sites. Prevent fertilizer, soap, disinfectant residue, metal contamination, and feeder-gel spills from entering the vivarium.
A drainage layer or false bottom should keep the surface usable rather than sour. Leaf litter may be damp underneath, but the top should not stay wet and compacted all day. If the enclosure smells stale or the substrate collapses into mud, increase drainage, airflow, or cleaning.
💡 Lighting
Provide a clear 10-12 hour day. Plant LEDs are useful because strong plant growth creates cover and stabilizes humidity. Gentle UVB can be beneficial if frogs can retreat fully into shade; treat the species as Ferguson Zone 1 with low exposure and shaded areas near zero UVI.
Do not use night lights. Darkness at night supports normal rhythm and reduces stress.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Target 21-25 °C daytime ambient, a small warm area around 24-26 °C, a cool retreat around 20-22 °C, and 18-22 °C at night. Most homes need gentle room heating rather than intense direct heat.
Avoid overheating. Sustained temperatures above about 27-28 °C in a humid enclosure can become dangerous quickly. Measure at frog level with digital probes, not only on top of the enclosure.
💧 Humidity and water
Aim for 65-85% relative humidity with local peaks after misting and drier airflow periods between cycles. The enclosure should offer humid hides and damp leaf litter while still allowing surface drying.
Use shallow clean water points or deposition cups only if they can be maintained. Breeding cups, bromeliad axils, and tadpole sites are not substitutes for general humidity and sanitation.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
A practical adult minimum is 45 x 45 x 45 cm for a pair, with larger enclosures preferred for groups. Floor structure matters: leaf litter, cork pieces, low plants, roots, seed pods, and sight breaks make frogs bolder and reduce conflict.
Use tight-fitting doors, covered cable ports, and fine ventilation. Avoid sharp stone, resin decor with unknown coatings, cedar or pine products, pesticide-treated plants, and open water deep enough to trap a frog.
🪱 Feeding
Feed cultured live insects: Drosophila melanogaster, Drosophila hydei, springtails, bean beetles, very small crickets, and tiny roach nymphs where accepted. Juveniles usually need food daily; adults do well on small measured meals most days or every other day.
Supplement lightly but consistently. Use calcium on most feedings and a balanced vitamin/mineral supplement according to the product schedule. Gut-load larger feeders and remove uneaten crickets because they can stress or bite resting frogs.
🥚 Breeding
Breed only robust adults with clear origin records. Males call, pairs lay terrestrial clutches in protected damp sites, and adults transport tadpoles to small water bodies. Captive breeders often provide film canisters, bromeliad cups, or removable deposition cups so eggs and tadpoles can be monitored.
Eggs commonly hatch after about 12-18 days at 22-25 °C. Tadpoles need clean stable water, tiny appropriate foods, and separation when size differences or aggression appear. Newly emerged froglets require very small prey and close observation.

Common failures are overheating, dehydration, stagnant wet substrate, poor supplementation, feeder shortages, and disease introduced without quarantine. Warning signs include weight loss, weak hunting, dull skin, red belly or feet, bloating, tremors, abnormal posture, and continuous hiding.
Seek an amphibian-experienced veterinarian for persistent refusal to feed, swelling, skin lesions, neurologic signs, injury, or sudden group illness. Do not raise heat blindly or medicate the vivarium without diagnosis.
