Madagascar Tomato Frog
🔤 Taxonomy
Dyscophus antongilii is the accepted scientific name of the true or northern tomato frog. It is one of three Malagasy tomato frogs and is easily confused in trade with the southern tomato frog, D. guineti. Colour alone is not a reliable identification, so the invoice should state the scientific name.

📌 Description
This stocky, ground-dwelling frog has a short head, a broad body and vivid orange-red adult colour. Females commonly reach 8.5-10.5 cm and can be far heavier than the 6-6.5 cm males. When threatened, the frog inflates and releases a sticky white skin secretion that can irritate eyes, mouth and sensitive skin.
It is an ambush feeder and spends much of the day hidden or partly buried. It therefore suits a keeper who values nocturnal behaviour more than handling. With stable care, a lifespan of roughly 6-10 years is a reasonable commitment to plan for.

🌍 Distribution
Dyscophus antongilii is endemic to north-eastern Madagascar, especially the Antongil Bay and Maroantsetra region. It occurs in humid lowland forest, secondary vegetation, gardens, drainage ditches and the edges of slow or temporary water bodies. Field research at Maroantsetra records warm, very wet conditions and breeding after heavy rain, including in human-modified habitat.
The captive lesson is a moisture gradient, not a permanently saturated box. The frog needs damp soil below the surface, cover and clean soaking water, while ventilation and a slightly drier surface reduce stagnant conditions.

⚖️ Legal status
As checked on 2026-08-20, Dyscophus antongilii is listed in CITES Appendix II and EU Wildlife Trade Annex B. It is not a European native, so the Bern Convention is not relevant to its natural range.
Appendix II and Annex B do not make an animal automatically legal to buy or move. The seller must be able to demonstrate lawful origin and any cross-border movement may require the correct documents. Buy only a clearly identified, captive-bred frog; keep the dated invoice, breeder details and any import or transfer paperwork for the animal’s lifetime. National rules on registration, sale, breeding, transport and welfare still apply.
🤌 Husbandry
House one frog per enclosure. A tomato frog may swallow a smaller tank mate, and even similarly sized animals can compete or injure one another during feeding.
Prepare the enclosure before purchase and confirm the warm side, cool retreat and lower-substrate moisture with digital instruments. Routine care should include:
- daily checks of temperature, water and the frog’s posture
- prompt removal of faeces, shed skin and uneaten prey
- partial substrate replacement whenever an area becomes fouled
- weekly weight and feeding records for new arrivals, then regular body-condition checks
- separate tools and a 60-90 day quarantine away from other amphibians
Imported or poorly documented frogs warrant an examination by an amphibian-experienced exotics veterinarian and faecal testing when advised. Never share water, substrate, tongs or drainage between amphibian enclosures; chytrid fungi and other pathogens can travel on wet equipment.
🧪 Filtration and water
This is not an aquatic frog and does not need a filtered pool. Provide a shallow, stable dish wide enough for soaking but easy to leave. The water should not rise above the frog’s mouth when it rests normally.
Treat tap water for both chlorine and chloramine. Change the dish daily and immediately after defecation. Bottled distilled or reverse-osmosis water used alone is unsuitable because it lacks normal minerals; if such water is necessary, it must be remineralised appropriately.
💡 Lighting
Provide a 10-12 hour day-night cycle. Plant lighting can be useful, but dense leaf litter, cork and a dark retreat must let the frog escape visible light.
Low-output UVB is recommended rather than intense tropical UVB. Treat the species as Ferguson Zone 1 and aim for about UVI 0.5-1.0 at the most exposed usable position, falling to zero in hides. Measure the actual level when possible and never force the frog to choose between safe temperature and shade.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain most of the enclosure at 22-26°C by day, with a small warm area around 26-28°C and a cooler retreat near 20-23°C. A night drop to 18-22°C is suitable. Prolonged heat above 28°C, especially in stale humid air, is more dangerous than a modest night drop.
Use overhead heat on a thermostat if the room is too cool. Do not place an unregulated heat mat beneath the burrowing area: a buried frog moves down to escape heat and can become trapped against the hottest surface. Measure air temperature at frog level and check surface temperatures with an infrared thermometer.
💧 Humidity and water
An ambient range around 65-85% is useful, but substrate condition matters more than chasing one hygrometer reading. The lower layers should remain evenly damp and crumbly, never flooded or sour-smelling. Allow the leaf-litter surface to dry slightly between light mistings.
High humidity without air exchange encourages bacterial skin disease. Combine a moist retreat with cross-ventilation, and use dechlorinated water for misting. A persistently wrinkled frog, abnormal shedding or refusal to emerge can signal dehydration, overheating or illness rather than a need to flood the enclosure.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
For one adult, use at least 60 x 45 cm of floor space. Supply 10-15 cm of pesticide-free topsoil mixed with coconut fibre and leaf mould; the mix should hold a burrow without becoming compacted mud. Cover part of it with leaf litter and add cork bark, sturdy plants and shaded hides.
Avoid gravel, small stones, calcium sand, fertilised potting compost, aromatic wood chips and exposed drainage material. Feed from tongs or a clean dish when prey is likely to become coated in substrate. Simple damp paper towel is safer during quarantine, but it must be changed frequently and does not support normal burrowing long term.
🪱 Feeding
Build the diet around varied, appropriately sized invertebrates. Earthworms are especially useful, supplemented with gut-loaded roaches, crickets, locusts, black soldier fly larvae and occasional snails from a safe captive source. Prey should generally be no wider than the space between the frog’s eyes.
Juveniles may eat small meals every other day; most adults do well with a measured meal every 3-7 days. Remove uneaten insects before they bite or stress the frog. Rodents and fatty larvae are not routine foods and quickly promote obesity.
Dust most juvenile insect meals with plain calcium and use a balanced amphibian multivitamin according to its label, usually every 1-2 weeks. Adults receiving appropriate UVB and a varied, well-fed prey base need lighter supplementation, commonly calcium once or twice weekly and multivitamin every 2-4 weeks. Avoid stacking several vitamin products or routinely adding D3 from multiple sources.
🥚 Breeding notes
Breeding is an advanced project. Heavy rainfall and access to a dedicated rain chamber can trigger spawning; females may deposit roughly 1,000-1,500 small eggs on the water surface. At suitable temperatures the eggs may hatch in about 1-3 days, but the aquatic larvae then require clean, stable water and specialised rearing.
Do not cycle a thin, sick, juvenile or newly acquired frog. Confirm legal paperwork before pairing, plan space for the offspring and prevent hybridisation or mislabelling with other Dyscophus species.
🧍 Handling and safety
Do not handle routinely. If movement is necessary, use clean powder-free nitrile gloves moistened with dechlorinated water, or guide the frog into a damp container. Change gloves between animals.
The frog is not venomous, but its defensive secretion is biologically active and sticky. Keep it away from eyes, mouth and broken skin, wash exposed skin with plenty of water, and seek medical advice if irritation, breathing difficulty or a serious allergic reaction develops. The broad mouth can also deliver a painful feeding bite.
🩺 Common problems
- Obesity: a rounded species can still become overweight; record weight and reduce meal size rather than waiting for obvious rolls of fat.
- Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism: weak limbs, poor growth or deformity can follow inadequate calcium, inappropriate supplementation or lack of usable UVB.
- Bacterial dermatitis / “red leg”: reddening, ulcers, lethargy or abnormal posture require urgent veterinary assessment; dirty water, cold stress and stagnant wet substrate increase risk.
- Impaction: oversized prey, swallowed gravel, cold temperatures and dehydration can contribute to loss of appetite or failure to pass faeces.
- Chytridiomycosis and parasites: abnormal shedding, weight loss, lethargy or persistent anorexia in a new frog justify isolation and prompt amphibian-veterinary testing.
Do not treat skin disease with salt, antiseptics or fish medicines without professional direction. Amphibian skin absorbs chemicals readily.
📌 Conclusion
The Madagascar tomato frog suits an intermediate keeper who can maintain moist but ventilated soil, feed a controlled live-invertebrate diet and preserve proof of legal origin. Have the enclosure, quarantine equipment and CITES/EU paperwork expectations resolved before buying; the most common preventable failures are heat, fouled wet substrate and chronic overfeeding.
