Dwarf Shield-Tailed Agama
🔤 Taxonomy
Xenagama taylori is the accepted scientific name for the dwarf shield-tailed agama. Older literature may list it as Agama (Xenagama) taylori or Agama taylori.
Common names include dwarf shield-tailed agama, Taylor’s strange agama, shield-tailed agama, and turnip-tailed agama. German trade material may use Taylors Biberschwanzagame.
📌 Description
This is a very small, stocky agamid, usually 9-12 cm total length and 20-35 g as an adult. Its short, shield-like tail is used to block the entrance of a burrow. The size is convenient, but the husbandry is not a small-bearded-dragon setup: it needs strong light, a hot basking surface, diggable substrate, and careful hydration in a dry enclosure.
Choose captive-bred animals whenever possible. Wild-sourced or recently imported animals can arrive dehydrated, stressed, or parasitized, and this species is small enough that poor quarantine can become serious quickly.
🌍 Distribution
Xenagama taylori is known from northwestern Somalia and eastern Ethiopia. It lives in arid open ground, stony or sandy flats, and low hilly areas where it digs short burrows and retreats under rocks.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-09-02: no CITES Appendix listing or EU Wildlife Trade Annex listing was found for Xenagama taylori in the current official search checks. The Bern Convention is not relevant because the species is not native to Europe.
That does not make every animal legal to buy or move. National import, veterinary, wildlife, transport, and seller-document rules may still apply, especially for animals exported from range countries. Keep the invoice, scientific name, breeder or importer details, import or transfer records when available, and clear identification photos.
🤌 Husbandry
For one adult, use at least 90 x 45 x 45 cm; larger floor space is useful because these lizards are active and territorial. Compatible pairs or small groups are possible for experienced keepers, but aggression can appear suddenly. Be ready to separate animals that chase, block hides, bite flanks, or monopolize basking sites.
Quarantine new animals for 60-90 days on paper or another monitorable surface. Record weight, feeding, feces, urates, shed, and activity. Use separate tools and ask a reptile veterinarian about fecal testing for imports, thin animals, or any animal with abnormal stools.

💡 Lighting
Use a bright daylight source and a high-output linear UVB lamp over the warm half. Aim for a measured UVI around 3-4.5 at the animal’s basking height, with shade and tight retreats nearby. Replace UVB lamps on schedule and measure output when possible.
Provide about 12 hours of light in the active season. A winter cycle can gradually reduce light toward 8-10 hours for established healthy adults, but juveniles, thin animals, and new arrivals should stay warm and active.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Create a broad basking surface of 40-45°C with overhead halogen heat. Warm air can sit around 25-30°C, while the cool end should remain 23-27°C. Nights may drop to 18-24°C.
Use an infrared thermometer for surfaces and digital probes for air zones. Do not use heat rocks. A deeper winter reduction, roughly 13-18°C at night, is only for robust adults and should be reversed gradually.
💧 Humidity and water
Keep the enclosure dry on the surface but not desiccated below. General humidity around 40-60% works well when ventilation is good and the lower substrate can hold a little moisture for burrows. Avoid a cold, wet enclosure.
Provide a shallow water dish. Many individuals also drink from droplets after light morning misting, but misting should not leave the substrate surface wet all day.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
After quarantine, use 10-15 cm of compactable sandy soil with some clay or topsoil so shallow tunnels do not collapse. Anchor rocks before adding substrate.
Provide flat basking stones, cork or stone cracks, leaf litter, several single-animal hides, and visual barriers. Avoid dusty sand, loose gravel, unstable rock piles, resinous wood, and cramped bare tubs that let dominant animals control every refuge.
🪳 Feeding
Feed juveniles small insects daily or nearly daily. Adults usually do well with insects every other day and plant food on most days, adjusted to body condition and season. Use appropriately sized crickets, roaches, locusts, black soldier fly larvae, small mealworms, and occasional wax-free soft larvae as variety.
Offer chopped dandelion, plantain, clover, endive, escarole, hibiscus, grape leaves, nettle, safe weeds, grated carrot, squash, and other pesticide-free greens. Dust most insect meals for juveniles and breeding females with plain calcium, and use a reptile multivitamin lightly according to the product label and UVB plan.
🥚 Breeding notes
Breeding should wait until animals are mature, well-conditioned, unrelated where possible, and legally documented. Females need a private laying site with damp, diggable substrate under cover. Clutches are often 4-11 eggs, and eggs are commonly incubated around 28-29°C for about 45-60 days.
Do not keep a male with a female that is losing condition or laying repeated clutches. Hatchlings need many single-occupant hides, small prey, reliable drinking opportunities, and separation if siblings begin biting.

Common problems include dehydration, retained shed, bite wounds from group housing, tail-tip injuries, parasite burdens in imports, metabolic bone disease from weak UVB or poor supplementation, burns from concentrated heat, and respiratory disease when the enclosure is cool and damp.
Seek a reptile-experienced veterinarian for weight loss, refusal to bask, sunken body condition, swollen joints, tremors, abnormal breathing, persistent diarrhea, blood in feces, severe retained shed, or a gravid female that strains without laying.

Xenagama taylori suits a keeper who wants an active small display lizard and can provide desert-grade lighting, a burrowable enclosure, small live insects, and backup housing for social conflict. Most failures come from weak light, dry-without-water husbandry, and assuming a pair or group will stay peaceful.
