Ocellated Spiny-tailed Lizard
🔤 Taxonomy
Uromastyx ocellata is the accepted scientific name for the ocellated spiny-tailed lizard. Older labels may show Uromastyx ocellatus, Uromastix ocellatus, or Uromastyx ocellata ocellata. The name Uromastyx ocellata macfadyeni is now treated separately as Uromastyx macfadyeni, and ornate animals formerly placed near this complex may be Uromastyx ornata.
Common names include ocellated spinytail, ocellated spiny-tailed lizard, and ocellated uromastyx. German trade material may use Augenfleck-Dornschwanzagame.
📌 Description
This is a compact desert herbivore, usually about 25-30 cm including the spiny tail. The smaller adult size does not make the care simple: the animal still needs very bright light, a genuinely hot basking surface, dry ventilation, and secure rock-like retreats.
Captive-bred, feeding, well-hydrated animals are strongly preferred. Fresh imports can be thin, dehydrated, and parasitized even when the colour looks good. Treat purchase paperwork and quarantine as part of basic care, not optional administration.
🌍 Distribution
Uromastyx ocellata occurs in northeastern Africa and the Horn of Africa, including southeastern Egypt, northern Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia near the Somali border, and northwestern Somalia. It uses rocky desert, stony slopes, wadis, and hard arid ground where cracks and burrows buffer surface heat.
The useful captive lesson is contrast. The lizard needs exposed, sun-like basking opportunities and tight retreats that stay cooler and slightly more humid than the open floor.
⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-09-02: all Uromastyx species are listed in CITES Appendix II and EU Annex B. International trade requires the relevant CITES export, import, or re-export documents, and EU commercial transfers need reliable proof of lawful acquisition. The CITES export-quota database also listed a 2026 Ethiopia quota for wild live U. ocellata, so a wild-origin animal may be legal only when its paperwork is specific and complete.
The Bern Convention is not relevant because the species is not native to Europe. National rules on ownership, registration, sale, breeding, import, and transport may still apply. Keep the invoice, scientific name, breeder or importer details, permit numbers where relevant, transfer records, and clear identification photos for the life of the animal.
🤌 Husbandry
Provide one adult with at least 120 x 60 x 60 cm; more length is useful for a stronger heat gradient. House singly. Pairs and groups can involve chasing, blocked basking access, tail strikes, and bites even when no obvious injury is visible.
Quarantine a new animal for 60-90 days in a separate room where possible. Use paper or another monitorable surface at first, separate tools, several tight hides, and written records for weight, feeding, feces, urates, shed, and activity. Ask a reptile veterinarian about fecal testing for wild-sourced, thin, or symptomatic animals.

💡 Lighting
Use a bright full-length daylight source plus a high-output linear T5 UVB lamp over the warm half. Aim for a measured UVI of about 4.5-6 at the back height of the basking animal, with lower ledges and dark cracks available nearby. Lamp percentage, reflector, mesh, distance, and age all change exposure, so measurement is better than guessing from packaging.
Run about 12 hours of light during the active season and reduce gradually toward 10 hours only for a planned winter cycle. Strong visible light is part of the care: dim desert enclosures often produce inactivity and poor feeding even when the thermometer looks acceptable.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Create a broad stone or slate basking platform with a surface temperature of 45-55°C. Warm air can sit around 28-35°C, while the cool end should remain 24-29°C. Nights can fall to 18-22°C. Use overhead halogen floods that warm a body-sized area rather than one tiny dangerous point.
Anchor all heavy stones before adding substrate. Measure basking surfaces with an infrared thermometer and air temperatures with independent digital probes. A controlled winter reduction to about 14-16°C at night is only for established healthy adults; do not cool juveniles, thin animals, ill animals, poorly hydrated animals, or new arrivals.
💧 Humidity and water
Keep general humidity low, usually 20-40%, and let the surface dry. Maintain a slightly more humid lower layer or protected burrow instead of spraying the whole enclosure. Cool damp air is dangerous, but a completely bone-dry retreat with no drinking opportunity can still cause dehydration and poor sheds.
Provide a small clean water bowl. Juveniles may also drink droplets placed on a rock or slate. Replace water whenever soiled and keep the bowl small enough that it does not raise humidity across the enclosure.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
After quarantine, use 15-20 cm of compactable sandy soil. A practical starting mix is washed fine sand, pesticide-free topsoil, and clay packed firmly enough to hold shallow excavations. Keep the top dry and add moisture only to a selected deep area.
Include body-tight hides, stable stone cracks, broad basking surfaces, low climbing routes, and visual barriers. Avoid calcium sand, crushed walnut, dusty substrate, loose gravel, resinous wood, and unstable rock piles. Feed from a dish or flat stone; impaction risk rises when salad is dragged through substrate, heat is too low, or the animal is dehydrated.
🥬 Feeding
Feed juveniles daily and established adults most days, adjusting portions to body condition. The core diet should be varied high-calcium plant matter: dandelion, plantain, sow thistle, endive, escarole, chicory, mustard and turnip greens, mulberry leaves, hibiscus leaves and flowers, safe weeds, and pesticide-free clover.
Use squash, green beans, grated carrot, soaked quality herbivore pellets, and small amounts of safe seeds or pulses only as variety. Fruit should be rare and small. Routine insects, eggs, rodents, dog food, cat food, and other animal protein are inappropriate.
Dust food lightly with plain calcium once or twice weekly and use a reptile multivitamin according to the label and measured UVB plan. Do not combine several fortified products.
🥚 Breeding notes
Females need a private laying box or deep zone with 15-20 cm of damp diggable substrate. Published incubation values vary across the ocellata complex and captive lines, so plan cautiously around 29-31°C and roughly 70-100 days rather than treating one number as fixed. Breeding should wait until both animals are mature, well-conditioned, and legally documented.
🩺 Common problems
Preventable problems include metabolic bone disease from weak UVB or calcium imbalance, burns from concentrated heat, respiratory disease in cool damp housing, dehydration, retained shed around toes or tail, obesity, intestinal parasites in imports, and impaction when substrate, hydration, food placement, or heat are wrong.
Seek a reptile-experienced veterinarian for weight loss, a sunken abdomen, swollen joints, soft jaw, tremors, abnormal breathing, nasal discharge, persistent diarrhea, severe constipation, or straining by a gravid female.
📌 Conclusion
Uromastyx ocellata suits a keeper who can provide desert-grade light and heat, secure dry retreats, fresh forage, and clean legal-origin records. The most common failures are weak lighting, damp cool housing, poor quarantine, and buying an undocumented import.
