Rankin's Dragon
🔤 Taxonomy
Pogona henrylawsoni is the accepted scientific name. Pogona brevis is a junior synonym, while “Pogona rankini” was an informal hobby name rather than a validly described species. Rankin’s dragon, Lawson’s dragon, black-soil bearded dragon, and dwarf bearded dragon all refer to P. henrylawsoni.
This is a distinct species, not a stunted central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps). Ask for parent photographs and adult size when identity is uncertain, because hybrids occur in captivity.
📌 Description
Rankin’s dragon is the smallest commonly kept Pogona, usually 25-30 cm long. It has a shorter, blunter head than P. vitticeps and remains a quick, active basker despite its compact body. With measured heat, UVB, diet, and veterinary care, 10-15 years is realistic.
Its smaller body does not justify a small tank. The animal still needs room to run, climb low structures, dig, and choose among a hot basking platform, warm open ground, shade, and a cool hide. Captive-bred individuals often become calm around routine handling, but they remain reptiles with fragile ribs and a strong startle response.
🌍 Distribution
The species is native to central Queensland, Australia, west of the Great Dividing Range. It is associated with cracking black-soil plains and seasonally dry open country, using soil fissures, vegetation, and burrows for shelter.
These plains combine intense sun and warm days with protected crevices and cooler nights. In a terrarium, reproduce the choices rather than keeping every surface equally hot and exposed.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-08-20: Pogona henrylawsoni was not found in the current CITES Appendices or EU wildlife-trade Annexes. The Bern Convention is not relevant because the species is not native to Europe.
Australia prohibits commercial export of live native reptiles, and Australian state or territory licences govern keeping and transfers within the country. Animals sold elsewhere should descend from established legal captive lines. Keep the invoice, breeder identity, parent or hatch record, transfer history, and photographs; CITES non-listing is not proof of lawful origin or permission under local exotic-animal rules.
🤌 Husbandry
Use at least 120 x 60 x 60 cm for one adult. Give the lizard open running ground, a broad elevated basking platform, shaded cover, and secure low climbing branches. A smaller juvenile enclosure is unnecessary if prey can be monitored and the full enclosure is well furnished.
House singly. Although group keeping has a history in this species, basking stacks, food competition, unwanted mating, and subtle intimidation can injure or suppress the lower-ranking animal. A pile of dragons under one lamp is competition, not evidence of affection.
Quarantine new arrivals for 60-90 days with separate tools and an easy-clean floor. Record weight, appetite, sheds, feces, and activity, and arrange veterinary or fecal assessment for diarrhea, poor growth, or uncertain origin. Confirm species identity before breeding.

💡 Lighting
Provide strong white illumination and a linear T5 UVB lamp overlapping the basking zone. Aim for a measured UVI around 3-5 on the animal’s back, with complete shade nearby. Set lamp distance from actual measurements because mesh and reflector design matter more than the percentage printed on the tube.
Use 12-14 hours of light in summer and a gradual reduction toward 10 hours in winter. Replace UVB lamps according to measured decay or the manufacturer’s interval. Supplements cannot compensate for dim lighting or an unusable UV gradient.
🌡 Heating and temperature
Maintain a broad basking surface at 40-45°C, warm air around 26-30°C, a cool retreat at 22-26°C, and nights around 18-22°C. Juveniles need the same usable gradient; lowering basking temperature because they are small compromises digestion.
Use a thermostatically controlled halogen flood and a stone or textured platform large enough for the whole body. Verify surfaces with an infrared thermometer and air with digital probes. Guard bulbs, avoid heat rocks, and never use coloured night lamps.
Seasonal cooling is not needed for ordinary pet care. Experienced breeders may gradually reduce light and temperatures for healthy mature adults, but newly acquired, young, thin, or ill animals should not be brumated.
💧 Humidity and water
Keep general relative humidity around 30-50%, allowing a mild night rise. Provide a humid hide at the cool end with lightly moist soil for shedding and hydration. The rest of the enclosure should dry well; constant wetness and cool air increase respiratory risk.
Offer a stable shallow water bowl and replace it daily. Occasional bathing is not a substitute for drinking water and correct humidity, and routine forced soaking creates stress. Urates should be mostly white with only a small soft yellow portion.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
After quarantine, provide 10-15 cm of compacted soil, fine washed sand, and clay. A roughly 50:30:20 mix supports digging while holding shallow scrapes. Keep food on a dish and maintain correct hydration and heat; impaction risk is driven by poor conditions and ingestion of unsuitable particles, not by safe substrate alone.
Add anchored stones, cork, low branches, two tight hides, and a rough shedding surface. Avoid calcium sand, crushed shell or walnut, wood chips, dusty bedding, unstable rock piles, and adhesive tape inside the enclosure. Secure every cable opening because juveniles are fast and flatten into gaps.
🪳 Feeding
Juveniles need small live insects daily plus finely chopped greens. As growth slows, shift the balance so adults receive leafy greens every day and insects about two or three times weekly. Suitable insects include gut-loaded crickets, roaches, locusts where legal, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae; waxworms and other fatty larvae are treats.
Prey should generally be no wider than the space between the eyes. Remove uneaten insects before night. Use dandelion, endive, escarole, mustard or turnip greens, plantain, mulberry, squash, and safe flowers in rotation. Avoid fruit as a routine item and do not rely on lettuce with little nutritional value.
Lightly dust most juvenile insect meals and about one or two adult insect meals weekly with plain calcium. Use calcium with D3 and a multivitamin less often, according to UVB measurements and the product label. Gut-load feeders for 24-48 hours and avoid stacking several vitamin-fortified products.
🥚 Breeding notes
Females may lay 5-18 eggs and can produce repeated clutches, including infertile ones. Every mature female needs access to a private 15-20 cm deep laying area, even when housed without a male. Persistent digging, straining, weakness, or abdominal swelling warrants urgent veterinary attention for possible egg binding.
Published husbandry references incubate around 28°C; P. henrylawsoni eggs commonly hatch in about 45-60 days. Do not exceed conservative temperatures, rotate eggs, or breed animals without verified species identity and homes for the offspring.
🩺 Common problems
Important preventable conditions include metabolic bone disease, obesity, burns, dehydration, retained shed, dental and mouth disease, impaction, respiratory infection, intestinal parasites, and egg binding. Poor UVB, an undersized basking patch, excessive rich prey, and group housing are frequent underlying causes.
Seek a reptile veterinarian for tremors, weak limbs, a soft jaw, black beard with persistent lethargy, repeated food refusal with weight loss, abnormal feces, swollen joints, mouth redness, breathing noise, prolapse, or reproductive straining. Adenovirus and other infectious disease make quarantine especially important around other bearded dragons.
📌 Conclusion
Rankin’s dragon can be a manageable first reptile for a prepared adult, but “dwarf” refers only to body size. A 120 cm enclosure, measured desert-grade UVB, live food, varied greens, and solitary housing are still the foundation of good care.
