🔤 Taxonomy
Chlamydosaurus kingii is the accepted scientific name. The English names frilled dragon, frilled lizard, and frillneck lizard refer to the same species. Animals from Australia and southern New Guinea differ in size and colour, but locality does not remove the need for a large, strongly lit enclosure.
📌 Description
The frilled dragon is a large, diurnal agamid built for life on tree trunks. When threatened it opens its mouth, raises the circular neck frill, hisses, and may run upright before climbing. That display is a stress response, not a trick that should be provoked.
Adults usually measure 60-85 cm including the long tail. Females may weigh around 400 g, while large males approach 900 g or more. Captive longevity is commonly 10-20 years. Most of the day may be spent vertically attached to a trunk, so usable height and broad upright supports matter as much as floor area.
This is an advanced display lizard. It is fast, capable of powerful jumps, easily stressed by pursuit, and dependent on strong light, UVB, heat, ventilation, and seasonal hydration.
🌍 Distribution
The species occurs across northern Australia, including the Kimberley, Northern Territory, Cape York and eastern Queensland, and in southern New Guinea. It inhabits tropical and warm-temperate dry forest, open woodland, and savanna woodland. Animals spend much of their time on standing trees and descend to forage, especially after rain.
The range has a pronounced wet-dry cycle. Captive care should reproduce warm bright days, drinking opportunities and moderate humidity without turning the enclosure into permanently wet, stagnant rainforest housing.

⚖️ Legal status
Checked on 2026-08-05: Chlamydosaurus kingii was not found in the current CITES Appendices or the EU wildlife-trade Annexes. The Bern Convention is not relevant because the species is not native to Europe.
Non-listing does not mean unrestricted trade. Australian native-wildlife export controls, national import rules, animal-welfare law, and local exotic-animal rules may apply. Buy captive-bred stock and keep the invoice, breeder identity, transfer record, import documents where relevant, and clear identification photographs.
🤌 Husbandry
Plan for an adult enclosure of at least 180 x 90 x 180 cm for one animal. Larger is preferable, particularly for a large male. The enclosure must allow a full-body basking perch, a cooler shaded route, several vertical trunks, and enough turning and jumping room that the frill and tail are not repeatedly damaged.
Keep adults singly. Territorial pressure, food competition, and breeding stress can cause chasing, bites, weight loss, and falls. A juvenile can begin in a smaller secure enclosure, but it still needs a real thermal and UV gradient; upgrade before growth makes movement cramped.
💡 Lighting
Provide bright visible lighting and a high-output linear T5 UVB lamp over the basking side. Plan around Ferguson Zone 3, with a measured UVI around 3-4 at the main basking perch and dense shade available nearby. Mesh, reflector, distance, lamp age, and branch position all change the delivered UV.
Use a 12-14 hour wet-season photoperiod and a gradual reduction toward 10-12 hours in the drier, cooler season. Replace lamps according to measured output or the manufacturer’s schedule. Do not use coloured night bulbs.

Create the gradient through the upper branches as well as from one side to the other. An arboreal lizard should not have to choose between height and correct temperature. Control every heat source with a thermostat, guard bulbs, and verify surfaces with an infrared thermometer plus digital air probes.
Night heat is needed only if the room falls below about 18°C. Use a lightless, guarded source when necessary. Avoid heat rocks and any unguarded heater the animal can touch.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain roughly 50-70% relative humidity, allowing short rises after misting and partial drying between events. During difficult sheds, local humidity around 60-75% and well-hydrated surfaces can help. Continuous saturation with weak airflow promotes respiratory and skin disease.
Provide a large, stable, shallow water dish and replace the water daily. Mist foliage and trunks several times per week, more often during the wet-season cycle or when the room is dry, so the lizard can drink droplets. Drainage and cross-ventilation are essential.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Use thick vertical and diagonal trunks, cork slabs, stable branches, foliage, and at least one high visual barrier. Every perch must support the animal without rolling. Leave a clear route between the basking site, shaded retreat, water, and feeding area.
A 10-15 cm soil/sand/leaf-litter blend can buffer moisture and permit normal ground behaviour. Keep it dry at the basking end and lightly humid in protected areas. Use paper during quarantine. Loose substrate is not a substitute for drainage, and feeder insects should not be allowed to disappear into it overnight.
Secure doors, vents, lamp cables, and service openings. Frilled dragons can accelerate and jump through a surprisingly small gap when startled.
🪳 Feeding
Use varied, gut-loaded invertebrates: crickets, locusts where legal, roaches, silkworms, black soldier fly larvae, and occasional other safe feeders. Adults commonly eat about three times weekly; juveniles need smaller meals more frequently. Adjust portions to growth, body condition, season, and reproductive status.
Dust most juvenile meals and a controlled share of adult meals with plain calcium. Use calcium with D3 and multivitamins according to measured UVB exposure, diet, and product directions rather than at every meal. Occasional plant sampling or vertebrate prey reported in the species does not justify routine fruit, rodents, or fatty foods.
Remove uneaten insects promptly because they can bite resting lizards. Record weight and feeding response; a seasonal reduction can be normal, but sustained loss is not.
🥚 Breeding notes
The species is oviparous and may produce more than one clutch in a season. Reported clutches range from about 4 to 18 eggs, with regional and individual variation. Females require a deep, private laying area of moist but not wet substrate.
Zoo husbandry records report incubation around 29-30°C and 54-92 days. Incubation temperature can affect sex ratios, so breeding should use calibrated equipment, redundant thermometers, and a species-experienced plan. Do not breed underweight animals or proceed without space for fast-growing offspring.
🧍 Handling and safety
Treat this as a minimal-handling species. For transfers, darken the room, close doors, remove hazards, and guide the lizard into a secure container rather than chasing it. Support the whole body and never restrain the frill or tail.
A frightened adult can bite, scratch, jump, or whip with the tail. Do not deliberately trigger the frill display, and do not allow children to handle the animal.
🩺 Common problems
Common preventable problems include metabolic bone disease from inadequate UVB or calcium, burns, dehydration, respiratory disease from cold stagnant humidity, retained shed, rostral abrasions from escape attempts, injuries from falls or unstable branches, obesity from rich food, and parasite burdens in recently traded animals.
Watch for weak grip, bowed limbs, tremors, repeated gaping away from the basking area, nose rubbing, noisy breathing, discharge, incomplete sheds, yellow urates, or sustained weight loss. Quarantine new animals and discuss fecal testing with a reptile veterinarian.
📌 Conclusion
Frilled dragons reward a keeper who builds upward: a room-sized-feeling arboreal enclosure, broad trunks, measured UVB, elevated heat gradients, and seasonal but well-ventilated moisture. They are poor choices for frequent handling or cramped display cages.
